Instead of making a thousand threads about one topic since important information will not be read by just an edit, can you enable some kind of a double-posting rule that would allow users to double post about things that are important? E.G.: In the ROM hacking forum I want to be posting up-to-date information and screenshots on my projects, but my threads usually die quickly. If I just edit my posts, people won't see the new information. Bumping topics should be allowed under those circumstances.

Something tells me that will never happen...

My suggestion is to do what I do: PM one of the mods for that forum, and ask them if they could please make a post, so that you can post updated information. Make sure to be nice, of course.

Just copyyourold post, delete it, then make a new one in the same thread

(a double posting thing for the ROM Hacking forumswould be nice, though.)

Replying to a thread where you already have the last reply should be made possible, I think...
A few restrictions are needed though, like the message would have to be different from the last one (to prevent those kids who click the "Submit reply" 5 times from messing things up), and maybe a time restriction too... Like you can only reply to a message you made X minutes or hours after you posted it.

I think the more effective solution would be to make it so that threads are bumped up to the top if the last post in the thread is edited...

Double posting is not needed (Even though admins do it anyways... )

We have an edit feature, but sometimes, people dont even know that an edit has been made *coughBTcough*

But that would cause problems. What if I made a minor spelling edit or something and it bumped the topic, that would cause a bump flood if everyone fixed their posts. Edits are usually minor.

Which is why it only applies to the last post... think about it. If you noticed a spelling error right after you posted, you can go back and fix it, and it would only bump up, say 1 or 2 topics at most.

Still, there could be a checkbox labeled "Bump thread?". Default unchecked of course. That way you are given the option of whether or not you want the thread to be bumped. If someone decides to abuse the feature, we give them a warning. Not all that difficult.

That's a better idea. Or the board2 thing. I dunno. Do what you want as long as it's more convenient than what's going on now, please and thank you. :p

People would obviously abuse a Bump feature...

You could also make it so posting on a thread where you already have the last reply will fuse your 2 last posts together in one message, maybe separated by a <hr> or something.

So instead of letting it live, just close bumped threads.

Pay the price for bumping, heh.

The person bumping a thread would not obviously be the one who started it... So that wouldn't be really fair. And that'd increase the amount of closed threads...
If the system requires extra-moderation, then it's flawed, in my opinion...

great, call me when you can think of a fully-automated way to allow good double-posting but prevent bad double-posting

I fully expect my virtual phone to never virtually ring

You could make it moderator controlled. Add a small amount of code where the double posting rule is and editthread.php, add a new field in the database and there you go. It could even be a time. -1 for no double posting, 1440 for 24 hours wait (1440 minutes) and so on.

Oh, hotdamn, it's not automated. Well, good luck thinking of something better

I am fully intent on implementing my way (or maybe this one, but editing threads like that would be a nusiance and it'd take less time to just post some spamreply), I was just commenting on how aparrently it's not good enough because it "requires extra moderation"

hey maybe we shouldn't allow posting, replying, or registering, since that requires moderation too

Oh so funny. Ribs hurt from laughing too much...

Anyway, my suggestion would allow people to post twice while still getting rid of double posts people could make by mistake...

But yeah, actually, if you just wanted a useless feature to make you mods feel less useless, then go ahead.
