"He said that I smell like a fetid mound of rotten cow carcasses? And he insulted my mother?"

"Yeah, he did! And he said he wants to prove how much better than you he is by challenging you. Right now! Gah hah hee heh heh, hoh... "

Jack stood outside the entrance to one of the arenas, with Atrats the death sprite floating by his side. He gripped the handle to the door angrily, and stared at the floor as he spoke.

"A simple 'I challenge you' would have been fine. This guy just sounds like an ass."

"Hah, got that right. Hey now, you said that you'd go to the next battle you saw… so you're not going to back out now, are you? "

"Of course not... this is just the kind of person I've been looking for. I'll take pleasure making this last few minutes of his life a miserable Hell."

Good boy! Good, good, boy! Good good goodgoodgoodgoodgood... "

Jack strode through the door and headed toward the middle of the completely plain, concrete arena. Atrats stayed behind in the shadows.

"…Good good… boy. Hmph, wow. That was almost tooo-oooo easy. He'll never win this battle. Ahh. You still got it, Atsy. Got it good! "

Atrats disappeared in a puff of black smoke.

Jack stopped when he reached the middle of the field. He reckoned he saw someone approaching from the opposite end, but he didn't know who to expect.

"Who exactly am I facing, Atrats? ...Atrats?"

There was no sign of him, but it wasn't the time to go searching aroundd. Jack turned toward his approaching 'challenger', glaring in a spooky manner.

Grey: "Oh, man that was a crappy day..."

He trudged into the arena, a small one he had set aside for his own personal uses. Adorned in his dusty Toys R Us shirt, and with an exasperated attitude, Grey had been completely burnt out by today. There was that lady who wanted a tax exemption because she claimed Native American descent, scrubbing the Zone cabinets, and the people asking for Xbox 360s... Yuck. Couple that with the four? Five? times he had to go out in the cold to get carriages, and Grey was not a happy psychic. Worse yet, some punk had called him out to his arena and insulted him not a week before. Hooray for mood swings, eh?

Grey looked up from the ground, and suddenly noticed Jack...

Jack eyed the boy curiously. Did he say 'his' arena? That would make him Grey, of course, but he didn't look anything like Jack had imagined. He was supposed to be the most powerful being in the Arenas, if not through fighting ability then at least through status. However, he wasn't even slightly intimidating. Was that a Toys 'R' Us shirt?

"I'm Jack, and I'm here because of a challenge that was made about a week ago. You wouldn't be my... opponent... ?"

Surely not. Grey ought to be above making crappy insults to goad him into a challenge. For not the first time in his death, Jack had to wonder of Atrats was telling the truth. Still, the thought of the impudence it took to craft that insult and the sting of Atrat's voice flared his temper and blinded his reason. Maybe Grey just hated Undead. Jack's face contorted into a kind of livid grin, and he gripped the handle of his dagger beneath his coat.

"...because I'd love to see the color of your blood," he added wickedly.

---
BTW, did all of that actually happen to you, Grey?

OOC: Yeah... But as a side note, my main on World of Warcraft is an undead...

Grey: "Sure... Whatever, at this point I'm willing to do anything, just to get the requests out of the way... Here ya go."

With that, Grey held out his hand, which promptly exploded. Blood, sinew, and bone showered out onto the floor of the arena as Grey stared ineffectually at the stump of where his appendage used to be for a few seconds, and suddenly collapsed to the floor, passed out from shock. His TRU shirt gradually began to match the hue of the floor around him as he lay in a pool of his own rapidly draining bodily fluids.

Jack stood rigid as Grey's blood splattered over him, just blinking intermittently. Now drenched from head to foot, the only sound in the quiet arena was the patter of the blood dripping off of him to the stone floor and the quick draining of Grey’s stump of a limb. Calmly, he wiped the blood from his eyes and shook it off of his hand, only spraying it around even more. He regarded Grey kind of disappointedly.

"Uyh, the jokes. Are you just going to lie there all day, now?"

Jack remained where he stood, still grasping his sheathed dagger and sullenly gazing at Grey’s disgusting remains. He’d just wait until Grey pulled himself together, or grew a new arm, or something.

Grey: "No, why?"

The camera swiveled around behind Jack, where Grey stood in his usual green vest and cargos. His hand was noticeably unharmed. If Jack were to turn around, he'd see Grey standing behind him. This, however, would not stop him from being able to turn around and see the bloody mess that was in front of him.

Alternatively, if he were to step to one side and half-turn in order to look at both Greys out of the corner of his eye, he'd see that the only one that was really there was the one he was currently trying to see the most. Except that they were both really there.

"You, uh, got some blood on you there. Looks like you could use a little more."

At that point, the speaking Grey's entire body exploded, showering more gore everywhere. Also, the crushed remains of a chocolate chip cookie.

Jack turned in time to get another face full of blood and muscle tissue from the second Grey, and coughed it out of his mouth. Again, Jack exasperatedly wiped the blood and some crumbs from his eyes.

"Cut that out! This is reminding me of my reaping days over in the Middle East. Two hundred exploded bodies are enough to set me for a while."

Instead of shaking the blood off, Jack smeared it on an item that he produced from his coat pocket. It looked, at a glance, like a simple rag doll that had been subject to all kinds of horrible abuse - it was stained with wax and oil, stuffing was coming out of countless rips, and there was a miniature bear trap on one of its legs. Jack picked the bear trap off and tapped the doll. It glowed a deep magenta in response to his touch.

"...Or I could always make you stop..."

Jack pulled a small pin from behind his ear, and softly stuck it into the voodoo doll's head. Consequently, Grey (wherever he really was) would get an unpleasant feeling not unlike having a broadsword shoved through his skull. Though the pain would be unbearable, Grey would take very little physical damage.

Grey: "Trying to break my concentration?"

Suddenly, one hundred and ninety eight more Greys, each completely well-formed and unharmed, appeared around Jack, nearly filling the small arena with their spacing. None of them felt towards the back of their neck, though...

"Won't work... That hurt, but it'll take more than that to break my focus. Let's get started for real..."

In keeping with Jack's reaping claim, all 198 Greys blew themselves to pieces, showering even more blood and gore left and right, as well as up, down, and to the B and A segments.

When the gore cleared itself out, only one remained. He was unfazed by the piles of blood and destruction around him, and rubbed the back of his neck, which had prickled a few seconds ago.

Jack, now completely blanketed in red so that not any part of his body was visible, decided upon bringing his arm halfway to his head not to bother wiping his face off.

"Normally I could feel a person's soul and see past any fakes, but you're just weird."

Running forward, Jack squeezed the doll with his left hand. The translated pain would be like getting strangled by a boa constrictor. Hoping this would at least stun Grey for a moment, Jack slid forward on the now slick, red floor, and with his added force launched his dagger at Grey. As it flew through the air, it flashed blue, and homed into Grey's position rather accurately. If the dagger were to miss its mark, it would swing back around and return to Jack's hand.

But before Jack could even reach Grey, there was a bright flash of light...

A thousand Greys this time, each one standing in his path, exploding in a shower of gore each time the dagger, which Jack still found himself pressing forward, touched shirt and skin. The Greys did nothing but laugh, as the rising puddles of blood and gore soon turned into a torrential downpour of crimson liquid. The original Grey's neck constricted as he laughed, and his head launched off his shoulders in a grim mockery of Jack's voodoo squeezings. The puddles were knee deep in a few seconds, and more and more clones of Grey were standing among them, reforming themselves and looking increasingly deformed and zombified, as though they were haphazard attempts to build a body from its component parts.

The clones bore down on Jack... There was another bright flash of light...

...And he found himself completely clean, standing in the middle of the arena, with Grey looking directly at him, an intense stare in his dark brown eyes. There wasn't a drop of blood in sight.

Grey: "This can't be happening... Right?"

His eyes traveled towards the voodoo doll, which he pointed his finger at. A jet of fire shot from his fingertip at the doll, incinerating it. Grey himself caught on fire from this, winced, and then relaxed as a cool wind blew around him, extinguishing the flames.

"I'll have no more of that voodoo stuff. It's unfair, you see. Though, I have to admit it's pretty easy to break the spell, just recognize that the doll in no way represents you and suddenly your own fears and nerves take control again."

He stepped forward a few feet. Every footstep that echoed along the ground triggered a switch in perspective back to that horrifying image of the thousands of zombified young men trudging towards Jack. When Grey stopped, though, it was only him.

"I'll give you some credit, though. You at least had the good sense to answer me when I asked you a question."

Jack raised an eyebrow as he found himself back in reality.

"Heh, well damn! That was some amazing mind-manipulation. I'm rather impressed."

Jack did something he rarely did. He smiled. The images that flashed into his head with every step Grey took only made his smirk more intense. This was quality brain-toying! Perfectly dreadful.

"Alright, so you're not so bad. I'm still wondering when you'll take an actual shot at me, though... eh? What're you doing?"

Jack's eyes suddenly shot to a point above Grey's head, where Atrats unexpectedly appeared, only visible and audible to Jack. The disgustingly lumpy creature danced and spun in mid-air.

Atrats: "Loh-dee doh-dee doh-dee doh! Loh dee-hoh hee doh! DOH DEE DOO DEE DOH DE DOH!!! Lookit meeee Jack, I'm hyp-mo-tising yoouuu! 'Splode!!!"

Atrats exploded and sprayed black ink everywhere, also only visible to Jack. He then reappeared by Jack's shoulder.

Atrats: "C'mon, Jacky, why are you letting this guy toy with you like a pig on a string? Get rollin!"

Jack: "Atrats, get lost." Jack hissed through his teeth. "You're more harm than help, and I'm sure you lied to get me here."

Atrats: "What? What? I'm only just hwere to hepp youuuuuuuu, Jacky boy! Gyeh heheheheheh!"

Atrats wiggled around and cleared his voice. When he spoke again, it was a perfect copy of Jack's voice, and now audible to Grey.

Atrats: "Hey, shtupid! Getta load of this!"

Still invisible, Atrats tilted the bottom of his body at Grey, from which a colossal blast of quite real ink-like liquid and smoke exploded with the force of a train wreck. At point blank range, Grey was sure to get blown backward and coated with the stuff. If exposed, he'd find that the gooey substance sticks to skin quite easily and burns like scalding hot tar. Also, it had the peculiar effect of aging its victims years ahead in seconds, although it always evaporated promptly, returning its victims to normal.

Atrats wasn't entirely careful, and Jack got blown into the ground, but the sludge didn't affect him.

Atrats: "Gyeah heheheheheheh, oh my."

Grey nonchalantly stepped forward and into the blast, which split into two halves of scalding white upon contact with him. A shining pink sphere glimmered around Grey as the inkblot seared the marble floor of the arena. Grey scowled.

Grey: "You're ruining my floor, demon. Stop messing with Jack and let him fight me."

Atrats suddenly found himself to be not only visible to the naked eye, but also glowing quite brightly, the result of a PK Flash maneuver that Grey had executed a few moments ago.

"The illusion's not over yet, Jack. I'm still challenging you to find out what's not real about this situation. Believe me -- You'll know when it's done."

Atrats swivelled to and fro confusedly when Grey acknowledged him.

Atrats: "Eh? Hyeh? Grr... going to be a stick on the dead-ditch, are you Mr. Poop Grey? Poop indeed."

Jack flipped up from the ground and examined the court carefully, trying to scope out anything that didn't seem true, as Grey hinted he might. Atrats focused on him.

Atrats: "Time for me to go, I thinky. Remember, Jack, home is where the heart is - and yours is rotting in the cemetery! You don't belong here..."

Jack: "Whatever."

Atrats raspberried Grey and twisted himself out of existence, leaving a considerable amount of stinking black goo to splatter on the floor just for spite. Jack stepped forward.

Jack: "All right. I'll find what's false, and you'll help me do it, Grey."

Jack held out his arm, around which grew a black, fog-like conjuration that spread up his limb rapidly. The area around him blurred and bent inward, and Jack began fading dim as a shadow. He then swept his arm around him while spinning 360 degrees, and from his palm he created a mist that spread to the reaches of the court, diminishing just short of the furthest corners. The mist, though harmless, was a hallucinogen, and if inhaled would have significant results. Victims would find themselves in an imaginary world of terror, where everything was transformed into a monstrous caricature, rendering them senselessly paranoid. Jack figured that this might distract Grey more and at least blur the illusion he was in, allowing him to solve Grey's challenge more easily. Ending the spray, he stood back and hoped to witness the success of his move.

OOC: This'll be my last post til at least Sunday night... I'm off on a trip this weekend. Try not to miss me too much. And if you can recognize this guy, try to remember that, much like most of this world, he's not real...

Grey coughed with the fog, and the world coughed along with him. He sniffed in the fog, and the world sniffed along with him. He could feel it taking his mind, and the world could feel it alongside him.

Grey: "No... You stupid fool... You don't understand what you've done!"

From the ground burst horrifying beings of nightmarish intensity. Great, gaping maws and hundreds of inky black tentacles waved to and fro as mighty creatures of fearsome proportions clawed their way from ground to open air, roaring and gnashing the entire time...

"It was you..."

With his last breaths, Grey placed a shield around himself, but could hold it for no longer when he collapsed of suffocation and exhaustion. Instead, the world of his nightmares took over as his body evaporated into nothingness, and the skies went dark...

In his place, a single being remained. It was a man, tall, with dark eyes and an even darker soul. Though he was not difficult for the keen eye to recognize, this world of Grey's fears made him only a shadow of the truth.

He wore no armor, simply average twentysomething's street attire. He held no weapons, save for one...

...A large, heavy hammer that looked very much like a duffel bag on a stick.

The terror-borne clone grinned as dark energy radiated from his body. He began walking toward Jack...

Jack cackled as he saw the court torn apart to madness around him. He didn't seem worried.

"You’ve got a wonderful imagination, Grey,” He said aside. He ignored Grey's words, thinking they would only be lunacy anyway.

Then, something unexpected happened. Grey fell over, and, losing consciousness, disappeared… but the illusion didn’t end. Jack was still right where he was. Now composed, he began to worry a little.

“Eh, Grey?”

Monstrous limbs and mouths burst everywhere around him, taking up the space to walk on.

“It doesn’t matter, it’s only an illusion. These things are harmlesssss - !”

A tentacle wrapped itself around Jack’s torso and lifted him in the air. Quickly, Jack grasped his dagger and sliced it down the middle, stunning it. He landed on the ground safely, but still struggled to escape its grasp. He then noticed the shadowy figure approaching him… and although he never met its real-life counterpart, the hammer reminded him of bits of stories he’d heard long ago about a well-known warrior.

“…Janus?”

Grey: "No, just a shadow. The real Janus is locked away from us all. It'll take a certain someone's gallant return to bring him into this world once again. The being you see is the Janus that exists inside of my head, as I see him."

Grey's voice came from all around... No set location in particular. Rather, a disembodied accompaniment to Jack's delusions. The warrior advanced forward, still faceless and still consumed entirely in darkness. There was a cackle, a surge of laughter, and the being disappeared...

"Do you see yet, Jack? You're what's not real in this place. Images only I can imagine, the vision of Janus as I see him? Have you not figured out where you are?"

The being reappeared beside Jack, a testament to its untrackable speed...

"You're inside of my head. It's a psychosis technique. I dove into your consciousness the moment you first spoke to me. From there, it was easy to make you think that I was messing with your own head... When in reality, I was just placing bits of your consciousness inside of mine. All of the damage you've taken and all of the pain I've suffered is completely imagined -- my expected reactions to what I believe you would do. There's one to wrap your head around: Who's the one doing the thinking here? For all you know, I might be controlling every action you take. That's your new goal..."

The being raised its hammer, and disappeared again, this time reappearing in a bushido stance behind Jack, having swung horizontally at him in the process. Whether or not he hit might be up to Jack, and his ability to think fast enough to move out of the way...

...But then again, it might just be Grey making him think he was moving that fast...

"You've got to figure out who's really controlling things around here. Get your own free will back, and you'll have beaten me. At least, in this case you will. Maybe then we can fight in a more corporeal sense."

Jack, still in the grasp of the tentacle, was not able to move. He was knocked through the air and easily flew several feet across the court and tumbled when he hit the ground, through fortune just barely missing several of the monstrous mouths in the floor. Jack rose limply, like a lifeless body just animated by will.

Jack: "There's something entirely wrong with that line of thinking, Grey. I'm aware of my own thoughts, and you can't be controlling them. If you were, I wouldn't exist. Though everything else here may not be true, and I have no way of telling if it is or is not, I cannot deny that I am thinking. Therefore, I am in control of myself."

Grey's world shuddered for a second, and the wraith-form of the fallen Janus flashed across Jack's body yet again in preparation for another strike... Could Jack fight back against something that might not even be there?

Grey: "You're on the right track, Jack, but you're forgetting one thing. If this is all perceieved, and yet throughout it all you have your own will, why haven't you forced yourself to stop believing any of this is true? The fact that you haven't fought my mind with your mind is clearly indicative that I have some semblance of control over what you believe is your own will. Everyone has a power like mine. Whether or not you use it is up to your own design."

Grey himself appeared again, as "Janus" held his hammer behind him and posed, ready to strike.

"Every move you make reflects something happening in the real world, too, you know... For all you see, you might have thrown yourself against a wall in the physical realm... Maybe that's control? I wouldn't know, I'm having too much fun looking at my own mind to bother thinking about what I'm fairly certain you can't see anyway."

"Janus" suddenly blew forward like a gust of wind, attacking Jack again with a sideswipe from the head of his shadowy hammer!

Jack made no effort to avoid the phantom's attack. He only leered, and held his dagger up to his throat.

Jack: Try controlling an unconscious mind, then.

Jack violently pulled the blade across his flesh, spilling oozy black blood everywhere, and immediately fell forward on his knees. Knowing that this blow would not be fatal to him in the real world, he willed himself into death in this imaginary one, convincing himself that the seering pain was true. He wasn't sure if Janus's hammer really hit him or not as the last thing he saw was a blur of motion, before losing everything to darkness.

As Jack fell to the ground, Grey clapped his hands.

Grey: "Good job, you figured it out faster than I thought you would. Finding a rift between the real and the imaginary... It's much easier to imagine yourself dead than it is to actually die, especially in your case."

When he awoke, Jack would find himself back in the real world. It most definitely seemed so, that is. Grey sat on the floor and waited for Jack to regain consciousness, meditating and focusing on his next move.
