It goes like this:
Ken, my buddy, his family is really poor, and he really wants a DS. His mom's been saving a lot of money for it, and on Tuesday, he proposed a trade for my DS. He had about 10 PS1 and 2 games, and claimed that they're worth upwards of $150 altogether. They looked a little crapped up, but Kenny's my friend, and I took his word as his bond and made the deal. On Wednesday, I went up to Gamestop to get them traded in. $9. Nine fucking dollars. I took them back, and today, I said to to him that he's got to trade me back; the games aren't worth 10% of what he promised me. He said "no, the deals been sealed; can't go back on it." Tomorrow, my friend is going to try and talk some sense into him, and if that doesn't work, I'm going to call his parents, and probably tell the school administration, since the "deal" was made in school. I'm so fucking mad right now I could scream.

Wow...that blows.

Yea, most PsX games are worth crap now. The most I've seen a game get, was around $12..and I think that was for FF7 (not 100% sure).

I can understand the kid being poor and wanting something that everyone else has/wants, but doing that to a friend is just low.

Good luck with this.

Well, they might be worth $150 altogether from one standpoint. If you bought all of them, then that might be what it would cost you (and you could find out, easily, if you look on gamestop's website as well as ebay's prevailing prices).

You need to understand that Gamestop makes its money through buying games for a LOT less than it sells them for. I wouldn't be surprised if THEY made $150 off of the sale of those games (minus what they paid you, minus costs of staff, etc). So I don't know if it's fair to look at that as a scam. It's never a good idea to expect to get money from trading things in; you should only do it if you really don't want the game anymore and none of your friends do either; heck, otherwise that's what your friend would've done. If you wanted all those games, it might not have been as bad a deal.

I don't think your friend really 'scammed' you...but I do think that caveat emptor is definitely in effect here.

No, no; that was nine dollars in store credit. And I saw several of the same games there for sale; about five to ten dollars.

Well, like I said, I think it's largely a case of caveat emptor, which means may the buyer beware. Still, if there were ten games, then that means they were worth $50-100, which is less than he said, but unless he did the research he may not have known that. He may have thought they were worth that much.

Or he may have been trying to scam you, I don't know. Really, the best way to look at it is how much you value the DS, and how much you value those particular games combined, and compare those. Trading in games is almost never a good idea value-wise.

When people trade a game in (and if its a damn good game) and they get shit for it, I tell them. Heck, I try to talk them out of it, but most of the time they just don't want it anymore. A few people listen though, especially when they try to trade-in rare PsX RPGs (non-FF) that are in great condition. And I'm not really suppose to do that, but I'm usually brutally honest at work.

I've told customers before that there $5.00 trade-in is a game that we sell for $30 or $20 (somewhere along those lines). I mean, if you know that you're never going to play a certain game again...ever, then might as well...unless you can get more on E-Bay or from a friend.

Heck, I sold my Marvel vs Capcom 2 for Ps2 for $70 dollars on E-bay and at the store, we give $22 for it. Not worth it.

Sports games are the funniest. I've seen some games as low as .10 cents before. XD

Anyway, what PsX games were they anyway? Any good ones that you might enjoy more than the DS? Are you able to get a DS later on? If so, just talk to the kid and tell him how you feel in a calm manner; don't have your friends do it. Maybe that'll help a bit.

Tell the parents, don't tell administration. Videogames had nothing to do with getting screwed over on your assignments or unjustly getting detention.

You're stupid! You actually sold games to Gamestop?

NO

Jesus

NEVER do that, in ANY industry! ALWAYS sell stuff on ebay.

You and him agreed to the trade. His estimation of their worth surely didn't take into account you practically throwing the games away.

If you go back on it now, you're a horrible friend and a bad person.

Just because you screwed up doesn't mean you get to screw your friend over.

mattp's right returning games can get you very little money but if you go on Ebay for it........Well I can pretty much garantee that if he did it he could of bought 2 DS's. So you'll be making a lot more money in the long run anyway expecally if they're rare games. Also you shouldn't hold much against your friend he probably had no idea that you would just try to sell the games to Gamestop.

If he's gonna be a greedy little shit, get your money back from him and tell him to piss off. He's not your friend if he's audacious enough to do that.

Like Anya said, never trade in games at game stores. We rip you off. That's how we make almost half of our revenue.

Back when I worked at GameStop (at home), the third key would buy games he wanted off of people for more than GameStop would give them, because they were still ridiculously cheaper than what we would have sold them for.

Yeah, actually, if you do keep the games, list the ones you don't want, and maybe you'll get some offers from people on the boards...no ebay fees that way.

That's a really wise plan!

Sucks that you got ripped off though. If it was intentional, I'd be furious. I can remember stuff like that happening to friends back in the days of mass pokemon card frenzy.

Hope you can get something out of the games though.

Alright, off the top of my head...
Legend of Dragoon (PS1)
GTA3 (PS2)
Jak & Daxter (PS2)
NBA 2K3 (PS2)
Alone in the Dark: THe New Nightmare (PS2)
Ford Racing 2 (PS2)
Unlimiting Saga (PS1)

That's all I can think off since I'm at school
If you want one, tell me. I'm now ready to sell them, since I've realized I was too foolish to do this deal in the first place

Did you even bother to ask what games they were before-hand? I should smack you right now just on the basis of what you have listed.
