It's Ash Wednesday (following Pancake Tuesday).

Tell me, what did you sacrifice for Lent?

I've stop sacrificing stuff for Lent about a few years ago because I end up doing the thing I gave up for Lent. For example, I gave up eating pizza a few years back and the next week after Lent began, I ate pizza.

So yeah, I'm not giving up anything for Lent.

I'm more on the take something up rather than give something else. One of my friends decided to pray the rosary every night so I'm gonna join her in that. Also, I'm trying to find more peace in my life and take a positive attitude to things in my life.

I'm actually doing that. I've taken up reading the life of a Saint at least once a week. Currently I'm reading about Saint Foy. I've also given up video games for the month.

I gave up Lent for Lent.

(I'm actually just giving up lurking, which is silly, but okay because I'm not really Catholic. Best of luck to the real Catholics, though!)

One thing that a lot of people seem to miss is the proper Lenten spirit...and I'm happy to see that some of you already seem to have overcome that, which a lot of my college Catholic friends don't get. In fact I myself didn't *really* understand it until a Lenten reflection last year.

It's not about giving up something for sacrificing it, for punishing yourself, or whatever other reasons a lot of people seem to see. The point of giving up something for Lent is to take a step back and examine your life, and see what parts of your life are on the border of being obsessions, of taking up far too much of your attention than a relationship with God and closeness with the people who care about you. You get rid of those things (or take up something positive) and you're better able to connect with these things. That's the idea.

Unless you're really obsessed with chocolate, probably not the best thing to give up, for example. But if your swearing puts people off sometimes, or at times consumes you in a sense, that'd be a good thing to 'give up'...

As for me, this year, I'm not really sure, I'll have to think about it.

I think I take everything in my life in moderation. I was thinking long and hard about giving something up for lent... and I really really honestly couldn't think of anything. I only smoke cigarettes like once a day, if even that. I don't do junkfood, I eat healthy.. don't eat meat. I don't watch that much T.V.. I'm on the computer alot, yes... but I've got to do something with my time. Actually, today I recorded a song like.. literally all day, so not so much computer. I don't completely indulge myself in something that much. I'm not like a crazy money spender. Don't eat fast food. I'm trying to think of things I do in excess... and I really really really couldn't think of anything.

And, I still can't think of anything. Last year I weened myself off of junkfood during lent. Proud to say, that I've pretty much stayed almost all junkfood free.

So maybe.. I'm perfectly content with my habits... and feel I don't need to give up anything per se. I'd like to volunteer more. That's what I'll do. All throughout lent, and following lent.. I'll volunteer more for things. I already do, but I want to start making a difference on a larger scale. Maybe I'll do a food drive again. Maybe I can do like a huge ass food drive. Yeah, that's what I think I'll do.

I wanted to adopt one of those kids from the christian childrens fund. Wow, if I had a credit card... I so so would. Everytime I see that commercial, my heart gets ripped out of it's chest and I wanna like fall on the floor and cry. I've cried because of that commercial before.

Bleeding heart much?

I'm also taking on a new challenge instead of giving something up, largely because I can't think of anything suitable to sacrifice. Most food items are out of the question, because living away at school doesn't always give one the freedom one might want in regards to meal selection, so I decided on something that might have a similar effect: I've resolved to begin exercising every day, hopefully with the result of making it a habit I can keep up once the season is through.

At the moment, exercise means a good number of pushups and situps, but it includes a nice run as well once the weather becomes tolerable.

I'm not out of shape, but I could certainly be in better shape if I actually put effort into it. So, that's what I'm doing .

I'm not Catholic, but I can see the benefit of Lent, from both a religious stand point (learning to appreciate what you've been given by giving it up), and self-improvement (just getting out of bad habits).
I was thinking about different things I could give up, there's really too much to list. Maybe this would be a good time to fight my caffeine addiction. But I just bought one of those commercial cappiccino dispensers for the kitchen (then again, maybe that's just an example of why I need work on that). Come to think of it I also spend entirely too much time here. Hmm...
I like Snow Tomato's idea of volunteer work, but I don't really have that kind of time. So maybe I'll donate more to charities. Maybe that Christian Children's Fund. I wasn't too sure about them because of their name, it sound it like more of an evangelical group more than anything, but I look into them, I guess they just mean Christian ideals. I have nothing against Christianity, I'm just not a big fan of food in exchange for your culture, type programs.
So, yeah, I guess I'll sponser a child. If anyone else wants to but doesn't have a credit card, contact me and I'll do it for you. Edit: The site has a "gift" option, so all the letters and stuff would be sent to you.
Edit: Ok, all done, sponsered some girl in Indonesia.

Well, my rationale behind it is that it has been isolating me from people and I don't feel that using video games as my primary source of socialization with my comrades is truly allowing me to shine in any way. Given that they have become increasingly frustrating to me and often cause me to become fairly angry I feel it is best that I use the hours I'd spend daily on video games to go to sleep earlier as I've finished my homework earlier.

Skydude, I agree with you - only I don't believe in God even though I go to church every week. >.>;; So. Taking a step back, I realise there are some things I do a lot, but I ask myself, is it worth it? Is it a good thing to do? And I think it is. So I'm wondering if it's worth cutting back on a good thing which I do too much? Still thinking about it. I'm not doing it for Lent, more for myself, so I can take my time over deciding >.>;;

Pun intended?

And yeah, candrodor, even if you're not doing it for Lent, and even if you don't believe in God, it's still a good practice, as no matter what your beliefs, everyone is necessarily going to have some things they care about more than they should. The way it was described to me is that Lent is a good opportunity to do so, but really it should be done all year round if possible.
