I'm trying to recreate an essay I wrote about what is the worse problem facing us today. I really liked the idea behind the essay, and I want to get some opinions of what other people think.

Our current problem today isn't something easily solved, maybe it can't even be solved. Our problem has been forced into subtlety, but it still exists and is brought up under harsh names. Racism, Sexism, any kind of unfair treatment against people just for who they are or how they were born. It is the natural thing that all humans have... bias.

We all have our own personal biases, some people can put that behind them and look at things objectively and see things from all angles. They aren't stuck in a box they put themself in, but many people are stuck in that box. They might be taught into making this box, or they might just make this box naturally, but it needs to stop. People need to look at the idea of objectivity on all matters and all subjects.

From abortion to slaves, it has always been the same. Two people looked at the subject and disagreed, sometimes there are those that disagree because they believe everyone should think like them and sometimes they disagreed because they wished to keep everything the same. If you're on top, why let yourself be knocked down? For progress of course.

A bias is always a bad thing. It always distorts the truth in one way or another. The straight truth will make the best progress, so why hide it or distort it? Why stop it? Everyone has their reasons, their own personal gain or sacrifice seem to come up frequently.

If there is a way to stop bias then we need it now more than ever. As progress advances, our morales will be put to the test, and everytime our morales have been put to the test, we've been wasting time bickering amongst ourselves when we could've fiinished the issue and moved on with our lives. So, why haven't we tried to stop these things? Why, in this last century, have we not been able to adapt and look at things objectively when we're progressing the most?

Edit = Disabling layout. If you're on auto-update, it won't disable it I realize.

One of the big problems with that is what objectivity is. Since we naturally bring a bias to the table of some sort, who is to judge what is "objective" in all of that?

I realize what you're trying to get at, and I agree. I think some objective truth certainly exists, but it's very hard to know exactly what it is.

It would logically be where there is no personal input and is pure fact.

Bias gets a bad rap. I blame the myth of an objective media, the idea that this is possible hurts journalism. No, bias is basically perspective, and the fact that we all have different perspectives is part of what makes us humans and what makes the world interesting. Bias is an inevitable part of the beautiful tragic condition of being able to percieve a distinction between you and everything else.

Bias... no, that's a dumb word.... let's say different perspectives is also what makes history go. The clash of ideas, the mingling of viewpoints, thesis, antithesis, synthesis. Gradually, person-by-person, generation-by-generation, the collective viewpoints of entire groups of petty, limited, "biased" little human minds gets dragged kicking, screaming and fighting in new interesting directions. It's an amazing process. Society evolves and changes through a million little interactions of a million little bits of what you so disdainfully call "bias".

The fact that humans all have limited, self-interested, flawed perspectives on the universe is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL to who we are. Without this there's no point having individuals, no point learning, exploring, growing. Without "bias" we are NOTHING. We have no art, no love, no passion, we cease to be what we are. "Bias" isn't a "problem" any more than bipedalism or mortality is. It's just part of the essential condition.

You can take away my bias out of my cold dead hands, you fascist killjoys.

There is at least some form of objective media, though it will always be somewhat biased. "Real" bias is when Sean Hannity makes up numbers to prove Liberals are evil.

No, that's partisan hackery.

Every news source is biased. "Objectiveness" by itself is not a virtue. It means a lazy media that sits back, does nothing, just reports what he said and she said with no critical analysis or context. Without that, you end up with content-free news where "objectivity" is prized above actual journalism.

If you like chocolate icecream better than vanilla... you're bias!

It's just the way we make our choices.

However, when those choices infringe on the freedom of others... that's when biases become harmful.
