I hate to admit it, but you were right Wurl. I just did some research and it turns out something like 30% more people die of obesity related causes, than from smoking. Here in Australia at least. But that still doesn't mean you should poison yourself, nor should you over-eat. Or under-eat for that matter. Anorexia is becoming something of an epidemic, bought on by obesity. (I'm getting off topic now, someone slap me with a cold fish)

Oh, and I have more than enough sense, doing it only recreational, once every so many months (to forecome addiction, I am not addicted to coke, never have the urge to snort, not even when exposed to coke, only when planned ahead.) And what's € 50 once every 3-4 months? Nothing, really.

God, I don't know where to even start with the coke thing. My brother does lots of drugs, and that's his most recent... and his behaviour is getting more erratic, dangerous and otherwise stupid. Out of all the dangerous drugs to mess with... coke is one of the very worst.

I'm wondering how long it will be before my brother kills himself with it, or actions related to it.

I hate smoking because its not only killing the smoker its also killing innocent people because of second hand smoke. We might as well destroy hospitals and get rid of medicine and anything else that we could use to help us because if smoking is still around people will still be dieing rapidly. There are no plans to get it off the street it almost like your murdering people and the police don't care so it's olbvious that the government and other people want everyone to die. A cigarette is like suicide on a stick only it dosn't kill you immidiatley.

Smoking is just disgusting. It looks disgusting and it is disgusting. A waste of money and health.

I've been reading studies (which surprisingly aren't linked to the tobacco industry!) that claim that smoking isn't as bad as widely expounded. Mind you, I'm wary of most studies like this.

Well, the fact of the matter is that while smoking is linked to negative health outcomes in general, some of the worst things, particularly lung cancer, are not quite as easily linked to smoking as they're often portrayed to be.

This can be seen through the fact that in many cases people who don't smoke, and don't get that much second-hand smoke, can develop lung cancer, while the vast majority of people who smoke like chimneys don't get it. Yes, an increased number get lung cancer as compared to the general population, suggesting there is a connection, but it's not as strong as we've been led to believe. As with most types of cancer, the most important factor is a genetic predisposition to it. Unless you have that, even if you smoke a lot, while you might have other health problems, lung cancer isn't likely to be one of them.

I smoke, a lot. I'm killing myself and spending all my money, why? For the same reason a lot of people smoke, I enjoy it greatly. Now I'm not saying that people that don't like smoke around them are jerks, because they don't like it as much as I do like it, that's cool with me. One thing that does bug me about smoking is the whole "Second Hand Smoke" issue, mainly because it's totally a bunk argument. Places like New York have placed smoking bans in all public buildings, which I think is ridiculous. The first problem with it is that the "Second hand smoke is a cause of death" study by the EPA was thrown out be the Supreme Court in the late 90's. In fact the cigarette equivalent for someone who works 8 hours a day in a heavy smoking environment is about 1-5 cigarette's a year. The thing is though that you'd need to be surrounded by well over 10,000 cigarettes to get any sort of disease. Then again, I don't really care too much if someone thinks that second hand smoke is a problem, as long as I can still do it outside. What really bugs me about it is the people that make a smoker go outside for a cigarette because they are uncomfortable with smoke around them. So I guess because someone enjoys cigarettes that they have to be uncomfortable, oh and bar owners have to send their customers outside for a smoke when they could be spending money on a drink.

I swear, some people will blatantly ignore or misrepresent the facts to make their filthy habit acceptable in their own minds.
Second-hand smoke is dangerous. Even if it were not poisonous, it stinks so bad that i cant take it. And it clings to everything in any building that people smoke in. This is because cigarettes have tar in them. Tar is very sticky and its in the fumes. Why do you think my coat stinks like shit whenever i visit a bar or a smoker's home? The main reason i dislike cigarettes so strongly is the odor and the way the smoke hangs in the air, forcing itself on me even if i want nothing to do with it. This is why chewing tobacco is not nearly as aggravating to me, if someone is chewing they are hurting only themselves, and there is no foul odor hanging in the air and clinging to everything.
Dr, Mario, you are dead wrong about the effects of second-hand smoke. According to an article in American Journal of Epidemiology, second-hand smoke increases the risks of strokes, in their study, non-smoking spouses of smokers were shown to have from 20-60% more strokes, depending on how much their spouse smoked around them. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has estimated that secondhand smoke causes 35,000 heart disease deaths a year in the United States. A study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that dogs in smoking households had a 60 percent greater risk of lung cancer. There are literally hundreds of other reports of research showing smoking, and even second-hand smoke to be very dangerous, especially in the long-term. To find a study showing the opposite you have to look long and hard, and then its of questionable validity. Virtually every well-reputed doctor you can find will tell you to avoid smoking, they dont do this as some kind of big joke on the tobacco industry.

A lot of stats are thrown around about smoking and health and that, though... some of the studies are very well-founded and others are full of holes, really. It's no secret that people who smoke have a higher risk of contracting certain diseases than non-smokers, but at the same time it's a really... I dunno... random thing. You have people who smoke three packs a day and live to be 90 and then have people who smoke half a pack a day and die at 55. There's no rhyme or reason for it.

Quebec's non-smoking law comes into effect on May 31, which won't be bad at first for business since it's during the summer. People won't mind smoking outside in restaurants or bars when it's nice outside. The ban was originally supposed to come into effect on January 1, which was pretty much NOT accepted by owners since we have... well... cold winters. XD You're asking for profit suicide right there. So at least they have an adjustment period for around 4-5 months and then can come up with ways of getting around the ban, like having heated patios outside and things like that.

If you want to smoke, i'm not going to stop you. hell, if you want to smoke around me, i'm fine with it.

Just don't blow smoke in my face or smoke in my car. Or in my house.

Personally though, i wouldn't smoke. Can't stand the smell and how bad it messed up my dad (he used to work in a lot of smoky clubs, made whatever asthma he had worse)

The only thing i smoke is bitches. And if that counts, i must be an addict since i smoke so many a day.

I worked at a restraunt during my high school years. When the anti-smoking bi-law came into effect attendance at our restraunt went up significantly.

The smokers aren't going to stop going to restraunts, bars, clubs, etc. They're still going. They're just not smoking there anymore.

Well, one thing that I think is a rather good idea is what Spain is doing, according to my friend who's studying there for a year. Restaurants may choose whether to implement a no-smoking policy or not, which will extend rather far around them. This will lead to certain "smokers" restaurants, and attendence by non-smokers of the other restaurants goes up...everyone wins?

Yes, Ziff, but remember... I'm in Quebec. The attitude about smoking, at least in bars and that, is a little different over here. Granted, if you get any increase in clientele it's going to be the people who couldn't stand going to smoky bars before. Great. But come the winter, the odds are we're going to see a few bars and pubs in pretty bad shape.

Last I checked, the bars and restaurant owners were petitioning for smoking rooms to be put in place, and I think that there's something in the new law that allows for that but with around twenty requirements or so, and I don't think many places meet all of those. Catch-22. So we'll see how things shape up over the next 3 months. It'll be... interesting.

I'll smoke socially. I'll smoke about a pack a month, if that, but I'll smoke weed faster than I'll smoke cigarettes. Weed can't kill you, at least, not easily. Not unless you snoke your body weight, and by the time you get through 1/100th of that, you'll just say "fuck it" and fall asleep.
