Non-smoker here, beacuse of my age and health, among others.
To me, people who smoke are just killing themselves... |

I just thought about this. In Summit county(where I live), in Ohio, they were trying to ban cigarette smoking all together. Meaning, you couldn't smoke inside your own house or car. I don't think it seems right, I may hate smoking but that doesn't seem right taking them away like that. Since that didn't pass, then they tried for just passing it if you have say children in the car or household(more reasonable). Smoking may be bad but damn that's pretty bad how they first tried the all out ban. (edited by acillatem98 on 02-24-06 08:56 PM) |

I say nothing to those who do smoke, but I am against it. Smoking can kill you. I don't know that many who do smoke, but it is a stupid choice. Smoking is another bill that most can't handle anyway.

I disagree; If you want to smoke, and you're addicted, you'll find the money.

I don't smoke and never will. I find it a disgusting habit that only costs money and annoys nearby non-smokers.

Hookah is a unique thing because it is an excellent social activity. Unlike marijuana which is taken primarily for intoxication or cigarettes for addiction hookah/shisha allows for an easy mingling of people with a minor distraction. I like to think of it as parallel to social alcohol or tea time. The tobacco and products used in hookah, and due to the way it is filtered (based on the hookah design) filters out a lot of bad stuff (leaving lots of bad, anyhow). It's quite an unique experience to smoke the hookah with a group of close friends and just let the conversation go where it must.

I smoke about 5-10 cigarettes a day, a cigar about three times a year (during special occasions), and hashish on a very rare basis. I will not stand here and defend it, as it is a horrible habit, but I will say that many people on this board have a rather naivė attitude towards both drinking and smoking.
Still, I used to say that you can't really talk about smoking until you've tried it. Now I wish I'd stayed ignorant about it, as I'm pretty sure that would have been better... |

I dunno, I smoke almost everyday. I can't say that I am happy about it, but I at least try to not smoke when I am not working. I smoke maybe 1-2 cigs on a day off work. But I'm a delivery driver, and believe me once you start driving while smoking, driving is just boring without it. That's why I sometimes buy gum (not that nasty nicorette crap), to help curb the urge to smoke while driving. I don't like menthols, so buying mint gum helps b/c I know if I do smoke my cigs, they'll taste like a menthol. I'd say on a day without gum I'll smoke maybe 10 cigs, on a day with gum maybe 4-5.
One major problem with smoking is the social factor. If you work with people who smoke, they tend to want you to smoke with them. So it becomes almost this big social obligation/temptation. I don't smoke when there are only nonsmokers closing the store with me. |

Originally posted by Wurl Maybe, but I didn't say that, or anything in normal English meaning that. Originally posted by Wurl And how long have they been "light" to "moderate" smokers? I'm sure you know this, but nicotine is very addictive. Think of all the old 50 to 80 year olds you know who have been smoking most of their life. Are any of them "light" to "moderate" smokers. Of all the people I know who smoke, or have smoked, the vast majority of them started out as "casual" smokers, smoking 2 or 3 a day to relieve stress or with friends. Now, they either quit, or they're just regular pack-a-day smokers. |

Originally posted by emcee My great grandma nanny lived till she was 96 years old. Smoked and drank every single day of her life. She died from heart failure in her sleep. Pretty good death. My grandpa Ronnie still smokes only about 2 or 3 cigarettes a day and he's almost 70 years old. I guess it depends.. but seeing what I've seen... I'll take my chances with the one or two cigarettes I have a day. And it doesn't matter.. death is going to get you in the end. Be it from smoking, obesity, a freak accident, or bad genes. Dying isn't the worst thing that can happen to you. |

Never smoked before, never will, I haven't even touched a cigarette or a lighter. None of my immediate family smokes, on my mums side my nan and uncle are heavy smokers and no one on my dad's side smokes.
I'm lucky I never had friends who smoked, I've never been pressured to try one either. During my TAFE (college) course last year, nearly everyone in my class smoked and I found it really hard at the beginning to put up with them smoking during lunch and brakes. I used to get real bad blood noises if I was around a smoker for a reasonable amount of time. I personally think it's stupid for people to smoke, but I don't go around and say it to their face. It's the individuals choice weather they want to smoke or not and I do understand that with some who want to quit, can't. As long as it's not in my face, I'm ok with being around smokers. |

Originally posted by Snow Trout Well, I don't know the exact situation reguarding your grandmother, but smoking is very bad for the heart. I'm not saying that's what killed her, probably just being 96 was enough, but I'm sure it didn't really help either. It's good that your grandpa's been able to stay at 2 or 3 cigarettes a day, but he's probably the exception rather than the rule. But, no, I'm not trying to be a public service announcement or anything, but there's no point deluding yourself, if you don't want to become a regular smoker, your best bet is to quit now while your still a casual smoker, but if you don't want to, don't. And the reason I don't smoke actually has nothing to do with health. I figure my poor diet combined with my caffiene addiction will do me in long before smoking would. It just seems like a huge waste of money, and I'd hate to turn into another regular source of income for some tobacco company. Atleast coffee's cheap. Also it'd be a shame for you to end up with alligator skin, yellow teeth and a voice like Rita Crosby. |
