That's right, despite what I've been babbling for years, I've finally decided to try my hand at some sprite creation. The results are actually pretty satisfying, though I realize I do have a long way to go before I'm finished. Two enemies have gotten their basic makeovers, so without further adieu...


Killer tomatos! Okay, they're not that deadly, as their droopy sorta eyes may indicate. These little buggers replace the SMW goombas (I retained the little feeties because they still fit my design).


Killer eggplants! The big eggplants replace the Koopas with shells, the little ones are the shell-less variety. (the little booties probably gave this away). I havne't yet thought of a replacement for the actual shells. As you can plainly see, I am still going ahead with the all food theme. The environs are sweet, but the enemies are healthy.... hmm, something's going on there.

Also, due to popular demand, I took some unfiltered natively sized screenshots. As always, questions, comments, and concerns are greatly appreciated.

Actually, eggplants were a common occurence in early Nintendo games.
But these eggplants do look great.
I agree with Zachio. Maybe you should try these graphics on the Rexes and see if it still works.

Not bad. They fit your hack's style better than the normal enemies. I concur with Zachio and Hyperganon though - you should put those eggplant graphics on the Rexes instead. For the Koopas themselves, you could try something like a snail (escargot lawls) or something else.

Good to see that JAMH hasn't gone to the unfinished hack graveyard.

Anyway, considering the first world is a candy world, would this mean a fruit/vegetable world is in the making?

Some better shots of the new enemies.


Koopas with Shells. Notice that the different versions have different shaded of purple instead of all being uniform. This helps more easily identify the difference between them. Of course, their feet will retain their original shades.


Koopas without Shells. I've been working on these guys shading a little bit more, I think the end result is getting better. Also, notice how the Blue version has thicker eyebrows. This gives him a sullen look that I really like. He is the meanest of the bunch, after all.


That pesky Blue koopa again, this time kicking a shell. This screenshot serves two purposes. One, to show off what I think is the cutest animation of the bunch (look at his booties!). Two, to show the new Shell replacement. I'm still working on the animation frames of the shell, but it's getting better.


I've been eliminating interior black lines in all of my sprites, but it's really obvious on the tomatos. The shading, especially at the top, has greatly improved. This is the furthest along of all of the new sprites.

That's actually the look I was going for. Here they are, in this bright and happy land, and they look like they're ready to fall asleep! Foreshadowing...? Perhaps.

One step ahead of you, chum. I first attempted to replace the rex instead of the koopa with the giant Eggplant, but it didn't turn out very well. I'm too lazy to find the bytes I'm supposed to change to correct the head placement (this is not a request for someone to do it for me!).

In regards to ASM... nah. Someday I'll sit down and learn the ins and outs of ASM hacking, but that will not be for some time. Content yourself with changed graphics.

I'm glad SOMEONE caught the reference.

And yeah, that was a driving force. I had editted the original enemy sprites to better suit my hack (no interior black lines, more "toon"-like shading, things like that), and don't get me wrong, I really liked the result. But I figured if I'm starting from scratch on all the other graphics, I might as well do the same for enemies.

I'll probably be working on JAMH until I die, haha. I really should look into getting some good level designers into the project. I love all aspects of editting SMW, but... if I had to pick the part that I spend way too long getting done, it would be level design.

In regards to future worlds.... maybe.

Oh yeah, before I forget. I'm looking for suggestions for replacements of other enemy types. Any and all suggestions are welcomed and will be attempted so long as they're not incredibly stupid or incredibly hard to pull off well.

I get the feeling that changing the bob-ombs into exploding donuts would be hilarious.

These look really great so far. I'm so happy to see that you're making progress. Though, the tomato doesn't look right when it's flipped over, being supported by its stem somehow.

But yeah, this is getting closer and closer to liquid awesome.

Those don't look very good at all.

The new goombas aren't so bad because all they do is walk and get stomped. That's not terribly distinctive, and any number of enemies could do just that without looking terribly weird. I can't say I'm not sick of them, though.

But the koopas... ugh. Now there's an eggplant that changes into two eggplants when jumped on, one of which flies like a koopa shell? That's terrible. Graphically, I think they'd look better if they were a thinner near the top, and the green on the tops of their heads should be darker and less contrasting.

Your little palette scheme doesn't look very good either. I'm conflicted over whether it's actually helpful at all or whether it's just annoying.

And please don't put healthy enemies in sweet areas and call it a plot point. If you gave each level its own styled enemies and theme, that would be so much better.

Considering what's already been done in this hack, I'd bet there are a bunch of people who'd be willing to help you out with enemy coding. Think up some cool enemy designs and ask someone.

Maybe you could replace Chargin' Chuck with a guy holding a giant carrot. He charges at you and stabs you with this really big carrot.

Some new screenshots to whet your appetite. First, the new sprites.


Killer Carrots! These guys replace the original rexes. I can't seem to get enough of that droopy eyed look for these sprites, for some reason. It fits the theme I'm going for, so it's all good (in my mind at least). And this time I decided to ditch the booties I've been using too much and just go with a sort of hopping animation. It's hard to imagine unless you see it in motion, but it works well.


Killer peas! (okay, I think I've overdone the Killer [vegetable] thing by now). Finally, an enemy that isn't completely out of it, at least regarding the eyes. I figure, if there's one enemy that's gotta be at the top of his game at all times, it's the Bullet Bill. The shading got screwed up somehow on the eyes, it will be fixed, have no fear. I've been working on a sort of blur animation (thanks ExAnim!), but I haven't gotten it to look right yet so I've disabled it for now.

That's it for the new sprites. Expect replacements for all enemies that will be used in my hack. Now, the touchups.


Not much has changed here, other than I took Glyph's advice and thinned out the tops a bit and made all the eggplants the same shade. I think the effect works better this way, but I would be willing to change it back if anyone has a good reason why I should.


God I love that little kicking sprite. Anyhow, what I changed here was how the Eggplant-Shell looks. Notice how it's sorta grooved on the bottom. I added that groove so it's more obvious when the shell is spinning (the groove rotates around, of course). It looks pretty neat when animated.

Exploding doughnuts... hmmm... maybe in the Cake themed world. Yeah, that tomato thing bugged me too. I already did fix it, but forgot to take a screenshot of it. I guess you'll have to take my word for it, eh?

I'll admit that the splitting into two eggplants thing doesn't make that much sense at all. But then, realism isn't exactly what I was going for. In regards to the palette and the tops of the eggplants, I already did change them all to use the same palette, let me know if it's any better.

If someone is willing to offer their expertise, of course I will not refuse the help. However, I'm not going to directly ask because I personally don't believe it's necessary at this time. Maybe in the future I'll post a request thread like I did when looking for a level designer (which, coincidentally, I'll be looking for another of those again soon, seeing as how Ice Man's help never actually materialized).

To everyone suggesting different enemies: Thanks, I will be looking into the feasability of each. For the Chucks, I will likely leave their basic body shapes the same, but give them aprons and those big poofy hats or something. You know, like chefs.

Questions, comments, and concerns are always welcomed.

The bottom pixels of the red and blue Eggplant's walking frame is in the ground.

A liquid awesome drink actually sounds pretty good right now.

Exploding donuts don't really fit the healthy foods theme (which is awesome and just plain works, no matter what any stodgy malcontent tells you), though. I recomend the pomegranate. Why, do you ask? Because in Spanish and French, the word for pomegranate is the same as the one for "grenade". Come on, you don't need better reason than that.
