Quick question. Does anybody know the location of the samus pallete addresses? I've been looking through the RAM all day and still haven't found quite what I'm looking for.

Perhaps a document.

The NES one? If so, just run a search with her pallete bytes in the order in-game :/

I don't know them off-hand, but if I recall correctly, the initial Samus palette is a normal 4 byte palette while the missile palette (the palette she swaps to when using missiles) and the palette she returns to after using missiles are both 2 byte palettes. You should be able to search for the 2 colors of her palette that change under those circumstances and find them just fine. They might be embedded in the code, but I recall finding them just fine with that method many years back.

my biggest problem is finding her pallete for each of the 5 areas. Each time you go down an elevator it's reloaded.

*googles documents

EDIT- ok I've found the location of it in the PPU memory with FCEUXD. The program seems buggy. It won't save. And the string for some reason or another can't be found in Transelhexion.

I can help you all out with this one.

I had trouble looking for this, too, while I was hacking Metroid Begins, because the pallettes that truly affect Samus's colors are not the ones you'd think they are and is not the one editable with Metedit. In fact, pallette 04 in each area as far as I can tell does nothing, except perhaps reinforces the true Samus/red door pallettes...

Thanks to help from Sean Kelly, who did a minor Metroid hack called Riffroid, I was able to finally locate these obscure pallettes through using a bit of trial and error. Keep in mind that Samus's color pallette needs to be changed individually for each of the five areas, and that the red doors and missile display in the game uses the exact same color pallettes, whether Samus is using missiles, is wearing the Varia, is in Justin Bailey mode, etc. This is why activating missiles in the original Metroid causes the red doors to glow...because the pallette switches for both of them. (This quirk has been weeded out and corrected for Metroid Begins). This can make for some interesting effects if one is creative enough...

One of Samus's colors will always stay the same, one will change with acquisition of the Varia, and one will change when missiles are activated. A good rule of thumb is to make sure that a red shade is the non-changing part of Samus's pallette, unless you are willing to change the color of the red doors. The Varia/Non-Varia colors should be two colors that mix equally well with the non-changing color if the latter is used for shading. For Samus in my hack, I am using dark yellow and light purple as the V/NV color, since both mix well with red. It also keeps the red doors looking normal with their new shading.

Anyway, without further ado, here are the correct ROM addresses for Samus's pallettes. For the first four pallettes listed below in all areas, the game is pulling the red color of her helmet from the "Samus Beams In 4th Color Cycle" helmet color since this never changes, and then mixing it with the gun]visor and armor colors from one of these first four pallettes, which change depending on Samus's status.

That helps alot. Like holy shit thats what I was looking for.
And before I realize that it wasn't saving because I stumbled onto the location pallete data was loaded to.

Thanks a fucking million billion trillion zillion

EDIT- WOOT! I got it working. And fixed the blue samus thing. (yeah that was an accident)

Thanks again. I'll be sure to throw you in the credits for saving me a shit load of time.

Dude Man, anything I can do to help, no problem. I figure that if I had access to this information then why horde it? I'm sure that plenty of other hackers who are having the same trouble (like I did) can benefit from this. I sure wish this had been posted somewhere when I was trying to figure it out! I figure the least I can do is save others the hair ripping I had to go through...

Your tilework in that hack looks beautiful! I wish I had that level of artistic ability...as it is, my hack will use tiles and sprites by Jorge Fuentes remodified by myself. What is the name of your hack?

One more thing, a suggestion. You might want to try sticking to yellow (or orange) and red exclusively for Samus's color scheme, then paint just the visor and the gun dark green. Make the missile change color the green one, and make the color when Samus's missiles are activated a very bright blue. This has a nice effect that when missiles are activated, only her visor and her gun light up, and appear to glow in contrast to the rest of her. I did this for Metroid Begins and it looks fantastic.

Happy hacking. Glad I could help. And thanks for the shoutout in the credits!

The problem I face is that the RED door shares samuses pallete. Making her green and orange would mess up the door. I'm not sure if I can expand the ROM enough to give the RED door it's own pallete.

The hack name is Metroid Genocide. I have posted threads before, just look through my bio.

Oh, MetGen is almost complete too.
