I was in the mood to try out the Super Mario Bros. Deluxe hack the other night and wanted to see what that was all about. So I went to Romhacking.net to retrieve it. Lo and behold, it would appear that the site is not operating at all at this time.

I thought it was just my browser, or perhaps a temporary glitch in the server. Gave it a few days before saying anything...no change. I sincerely hope that this site is not down for good, it had a lot of potential.

Well, what is technically happening is that when you load http://www.romhacking.net, the server at that address responds by redirecting you to http://romhacking.deadbeat-inc.com... When your computer tries to load this new site, it fails because romhacking.deadbeat-inc.com is an "unknown host" -- it's looking for an IP address to go with that name, and can't find one. (But http://deadbeat-inc.com still works.)

So, it's not a simple server configuration problem. I'm guessing either the site is just gone, and that's why its domain name was erased from existence, or its domain name was removed by mistake, and now it's just an IP address with no name... Now if only we had its IP address...

All the IP addresses hosted on deadbeat-inc.com are somewhere in the 70.84.0.0 - 70.87.255.255 range, if anyone wants to try guessing.

EDIT: Now that it's back up, its IP address is 70.86.14.179.

The server has a directory named 'romhacking' in it's web root. But it redirects you, and you can't access it. It has also a 'pc' directory, with a fresh install of 'web zen', an e-commerce solution. My fear is that somebody forgot to renew the domain, and some vulture grabbed it

that wouldnt apply for romhacking.deadbeat-inc.com since its a subdomain of deadbeat-inc.com, and if the folder is there but nothing is coming up with the subdomain then something is either wrong with the subdomain, or it got deleted, romhacking.net is registered to parodius.com and the name servers are also pointing there...and it does expire this year(July 12) but it was created in 2001. just give it time, there might be something wrong with subdomain configurations on that server.

Sorry to rain on anyone's parade, but last I checked Super Mario Bros. Deluxe was a remake for GBC.

Yes, it is. However, a very creative hacker who's name currently escapes me did a hack of the game Super Mario World and used the same name for his hack. It is a hack which changes all the levels of Super Mario World into the levels of the original Super Mario Bros. and uses re-touched SMB3 graphics. Quite frankly, I think it's an amazing effort that looks ten times better than Super Mario All-Stars!

However, I have yet to play it...

Looks like it's up now.

You're looking for SMB Deluxe, by peter_ac, right?

And, if you want it, SMB:TLL DX.

And, seeing that this pertains to SMW Hacking, move it?

I assume everybody knows the site is back up now, right?

There were some subdomain issues and naturally the person that could resolve them was out of town for the long weekend.

Eventually, we're going to end up doing this whole thing the right way and taking over the full domain and I will assume total control of the site. Right now I don't deal with the domain/DNS/server config(ie webmaster) portions of the site. I originally started it out this way because I didn't know how successful the site would be and didn't want to invest much in it up front until I found out how it would do.

Don't worry, ROMhacking.net isn't going anywhere. I will NOT follow in the foot steps of ROMhacking.com. We also keep full backups of the site, so even if there was an unresolvable host problem, the site simply would need to be set up somewhere else. We also have a contingency plan in the event I dissapeared from the web for whatever reason.

With that said, we could use a few more of you guys over there on our forums. Game editing type ROM hackers are still the minority over there as opposed to the translation guys. Our hacks database is growing daily. We've got about 70 hacks and that's with trying to keep all the poor quality hacks out. So if you haven't had a look since the section opened, there are many new additions.

Ths site is indeed up. Thanks for the info.

And many thanks for the links to Super Mario Bros. Deluxe. Tried it out yesterday and had to pick my jaw up off the floor. Granted, it's got a few minor quirks, and Bowser doesn't put up much of a fight...but it's a hell of a lot more than most could probably do with Super Mario World. A lot of work went into it, and from what I can tell it probably required a re-write of over half the game. Very impressive!

Metroid Begins, my own upcoming hack, will be coming to Romhacking.net on August 6th, 2006, so look for it then. Screenshots coming very soon, promise. Second round of playtesting to begin this weekend, as I had to practically re-design the bottom of Norfair to successfully incorporate the use of TWO pallette switches...

Kudos!
