Yeah, I´ve heard that they´re already recording the third one. I heard that when I heard that the second movie was on its way.

Cuz that's pretty lame. They were the perfect touch to make him look like a pirate.
Laaaaame.

Right, what would real pirates have done without their makeup... I'm also trying to point out that Depp's overall demeanor was pretty effeminent as well. He also had all kinds of beads and crap in his hair and beard. Throw in the light red bandana and he starts to look like a hippy chick. I'm not hating on him, I'm just saying that I thought his overall look and behavior was pretty feminine.

The modern western male concept of physical appeal is based a modicum of class and restraint. A man is handsome in his formal wear, for example, not because of any gaudy colors or daring cuts but simply because of the exquisiteness of the suit's tailoring.

Back in the olden days, though, the idea of male physical appeal was more crude and vulgar and ostentatious, and the lower-class you were the more blatant it became.

A similar modern parallel between class and clothing would be the rather unfortunate phenomenon of "bling" and the excesses thereof.

Riiiight. Which is why when Paul Burchill went pirate, he based his entire look around Depp's portrayal.

Tommathy - There must be something about Harry Potter that is gay-appealing, because my gay friend says he is in love with the red head from the Harry Potter movies

drjayphd: I understand that he is a wrestler from the UK, other than that i've never even seen him in action aside from that picture, nor do I watch wrestling. But if he's a professional wrestler, he can probably dress however he wants and still look fairly macho. A wiki on him says that he's a descendent of a pirate on Blackbeard's ship, so at least he's got some pedigree for the part. (Notice however there are no beads/eyeliner in that picture.)

Women find pirates sexy in the same way that they find cowboys sexy in theory - even though historically both were lowclass scum who probably weren't very sexy by modern tastes. What I'm trying to say is that if a straight man found J. Depp sexy as a pirate in that movie, it's probably because he dressed / acted much like a woman. I don't see what's so hard to understand about that, as this same idea was brought up earlier in the thread by someone else. You expect pirates to be swashbuckling in movies, but as I recall some of Depp's behavior was downright fruity.

On the other hand if I go back and watch Sean Connery in old Bond films you can tell that he is THE. MAN. but I don't find myself attracted to him, because of his dress and the way he carries himself.

Well, I think you need to understand that in general the "I'm a straight man but I find this guy sexy" thing is largely used as a joke of sorts, and what it really says is essentially what you're saying about Sean Connery as James Bond; he's really cool, looks great, and all that sort of thing. I've also heard it referred to as a "nonsexual crush" which I continue to find amusing.

Or it could be like in Greg Behrendt's special "Mantastic". Basically, he uses characters like Antonio Banderas's character in Desperado to describe the titular concept: men making men sexy for men. He uses it to go on about straight guys being uncomfortable with watching the movie and thinking that yeah, Salma Hayek's hot, but they kinda want to do Antonio. It's really all a matter of how comfortable you are with yourself, I guess.

Oh, god, Alan Rickman... Not necessarily hot, but dear god is he an amazing actor. I can't say I find him attractive, just that he's really appealing and very funny. Witty, I guess? You get that kind of feeling when you watch movies that have him in them.

Well, except for Harry Potter... I think that's kinda intentional though.

I don't exactly have much of a 'crush' on any celebreties as doing so would be entirely pointless, I've always had a bit of an attraction to Riyu Kosaka. This picture does her no such justice, but she's quite a pretty lady.
