Here are some things that should or should not be done when hacking. Please post more if anyone wants to add advice.

1. Never make a joke glitchy level in your hack to be funny, because it's not!

2. If you use a background that you used before, change the sky or background colors a bit. I've seen to many hacks with the same backgrounds in a world and same colors extremly boring.

3. Create puzzles, and tricks in you levels (probobly later levels more than others)

4. If you have to make a puzzle and the player fails; don't let it keep him trapped till times runs out; create a instant death or a way to come in and out.

5. Make special levels harder or longer; this includes castles or "Special World" levels etc etc...

6. Every level should have at least one pipe that leads to a small event.

7.If someone in the forum says something negative concerning your hack, do not blow them off, because they are the ones you want to impress.

8. Please! Don't create a hack with just a few levels. Let it be a good fun hack; don't be afraid to put time into it.

9. My opinion, Let your hack have some kind of special world and purpose to it. It makes it surprising and fun.

10. So many hackers do this and it drives me insane!! Don't copy your levels and move a couple things around, every level needs to be unique; like I said before: "Don't be afraid to put some time into it!!".

Maybe you agree with these or maybe you don't. Put some more thoughts into it if anyone has any ideas, starting with No. 11...

12. If anyone has got the sprites of mario(and yoshi)Fox uses in his postlayout, make a hack with them.(IE make mario/luigi look different in the hack, or change them completely like ninji's saga) it might be a small change, but it set you apart

13: In my opinion, you should not use this background in your hack anywhere. I don't know what game this came from, but I have seen it in a few hacks and the "gears" look like metallic flesh squishing around when they are animated.

14. Make sure your overworld looks correct! Look at it in a 3D perspective, not 2D! I have seen too many messed up overworlds.

don't do this

#Who-Gives-A-Damn. Don't use the same base of a level twice in a row. It's fine when they're split apart, but having 6 overworld desert levels that take place at sunset thrown at you in one world in a row...no. Look at the original for example. Let's use Chocolate Island as an example world.

Chocolate Island 1: Grassy level. Has rhinos.
Chocolate Ghost House: Ghost house; much different from previous ghost houses thanks to Fishin' Boo and moving holes.
Chocolate Island 2: Unique rocky-palletted level with many paths.
Chocolate Island 3: Mushroom-Top level with roating platforms.
Chocolate Fortress: Brown Castle with mud.
Chocolate Island 4: Cave level with mud.
Chocolate Island 5: Another grassy level with enemies in blocks
Castle #6: Castle with crushers

See how the themes vary differently? A while of the same type of level gets repetitive after a while, so keep things interesting!

19. Don't put powerups like capes or yoshis right at the start of a level. Make players earn them. Also, if they're at the start, then you can just go in and get it, then START+SELECT to escape. That makes it far too easy.

20. Try and use different tilesets for similar themed levels. For instance, if you have castles in your hack, try and give each castle a different theme instead of just grey blocks every time. A good example of this is Panic in the Mushroom Kingdom by Ghettoyouth.

10^42. Don't make a death trap that requires save states to get across.
10^42+1. Don't make slopes that go down into a bottomless pit, so that if you slide on them you die.
10^42+2. No one-block-gaps. In SMB1 and SMB3 you could run over those, but SMW's engine is different so you fall down unless you jump which is very time consuming and boring.
10^42+3. Don't make a hack if your Internet alter ego is "legoman".
