What is your opinion of the consoles now that more information is out?

What do you program in?

Well, I still wanna buy a Wii this winter, but I gotta admit, Assassin's Creed looks very pretty, and I can't resist a Metal Gear Solid game. But I can't afford 600 bucks! Or 500, at that. I don't really care so much about hardware specs, or media devices, to me it's about the games, the fun, and the kicking Kyouji's ass up and down the street in Super Smash Brothers Brawl.

I program in Java, mostly. That'd be because it's the only language I've learned thus far in a way that allows me to really use it correctly. Even then, I have little to no knowledge of the language's deeper parts, though I'll be learning about it in later classes when I go back to college.

I'm also looking at Sukasa's ASM tutorial as he writes it. I figure that could come in handy...

Grey... Two part question.

I have two blue jean jackets. I was thinking on keeping one nice and putting patches and buttons (and beer caps hotglued to safety pins) on the other. I don't wanna look too emo or like some weird 80's freako. Can I get away with this? It's the only way I can think of to show off my Decepticon patch.

If the answer to the above is yes, then on to part two.
I picked up a Hello Kitty patch. It's grey with purple and black trim and a white kitty face. Can I pull off wearing it?

Well, first off...

Why are you and Elmo the only people on top now, despite that this is now the 'Femine's Corner?'

Anyway, on to my actual question...

I have this friend in college--she's a year ahead of me.
We've known each other for almost a year now.
However, we've only ever touched each other twice: when we first met, she shook hands, and when I said good-bye to her for the summer, I gave her a good-bye hug, but she seemed to hate it. ;

Our relationship is very strange because she acts nice and kind, and everything, but somehow, she always seems nervous when we hang out.
She's a kind, sweet, caring person, but for whatever reason, she's not herself around me.
She treats me differently than the rest of her friends.
She tells them how she wants to see them, how much she misses them, she laughs at their jokes...
But whenever I do any of those things for her, she doesn't respond.
She does adorable and sweet things and when I do them back to her, she completely ignores it.

I found out that she's been talking about me to her friends from home (Taiwan), where all she's had to say about me are bad things...
She's called me 'pitiful,' 'lonely,' 'socially awkward,' 'strange'...
And instead of referring to me by my NAME or even a title like, "My friend," she only called me the equivilant of 'strange/suspicious schoolmate.'

She's said a lot of things about me to her friends at home that part of me is angry at her about.
She makes me feel unappreciated, etc. But she's a good person--why would she act differently toward me? Sure, we've only known each other a year, but a year is a long time. I'm sure she was MUCH closer with her friends a year after she knew them than with me.

To be honest, it feels like she's trying to force herself to be my friend, but she doesn't really want to.

What should I do? I want to tell her that I'm not an idiot and can tell that she doesn't necessarily mean some of the things she says to me, etc.
I can't just 'let go' and stop being her friend, though.
I don't know, any ideas?
Danielle

I've wanted to start a "Ask Danielle" one, but it was rejected some time ago. We could use some Estrogen around these parts though.

I'll make that my question to Grey, actually. Should I?

I'd like to propose an "Ask witeasprinwow." It'll be a little differnt from any of the other Asks.

First off, all the questions will be related to how manly I am.

Second, the answer to every question will be, "Go jump in a woodchipper. You will serve society better as mulch."

How's it sound?

Ooh, got a list of questions now...

...and some competition, it looks like.

Kasdarack: I am NOT a Hello Kitty fan, but to each their own. And hey, you never know: You might make it look good. I'm personally more a fan of comfort than anything else, and denim jackets don't really appeal to me, but you DO have yourself a Decepticon patch, and that DOES deserve to be shown off...

DS: I gotta say... That's tough. I can definitely empathize. A lot of people do that very same thing to me. I think it's just something that comes naturally to a few people here and there. You should confront her and tell her that she doesn't have to force herself to be your friend. Ideally, you don't have to even associate with her at all, but you've said that you can't just do that. Heck, if I were you I'd just stop talking to her altogether, but you must have some motivation that I wouldn't. The whole situation seems kind of fishy to me, though. Definitely get your feelings out there. If anything, she's patronizing you. You don't have to take that.

Danielle: Well, I can see my answer now would in no way influence its appearance... But yeah, I'd endorse a less manly presence in what is supposed to be a girls' forum.

Wite: You'd definitely gain yourself a very exclusive and devoted cult fanbase....

i always wanted to see an "ask an ass" and maybe witeasprinwow is the man for the job. however, instead of emphasizing your own manliness, i think it would be more amusing to emphasize their lack of manliness.
come on, everyone loves watching people being picked on in internet forums!

What games do you love to play on your Nintendo DS (assuming you have one).
And if you don't have one, WHY NOT?

[Oh, and thanks. Yea, it really feels like she patronizes me, I really don't like it, but it's also that she's just not being herself around me. I do intend to tell her how she's been making me feel, it's all a matter of how--as much as I want to just drill her with all the stupid things she's done, I shouldn't--and when. The reason why I can't just ignore her is because a.) I'm not like that, and b.) she's a good person, I see how she acts around everyone else, like HERSELF, and I know if she would just act like herself around ME things would be great.]

Jeff, I'm manlier than wite. Or at least hairier.

DS: DS! Oh man I love my DS. I love to play all of the games I have, actually: There's no one game (well, except for New Super Mario Brothers) that I play above the rest.

What I've got:

Advance Wars DS
Meteos
Puyo Pop Fever
New Super Mario Brothers
Nintendogs
Brain Age
Sonic Rush
Golden Sun 2
Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time
Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga

I included GBA games in there because I'm bored, needed this to be a real list, and wanted to have it be longer because I was insecure about the size of my.... er, list.

I CHALLENGE YOU TO A LOG-CUTTING AND WHISKEY-DRINKING CONTEST

A 1-1 split will be decided by seppuku with a panel of judges.

(Hairier? Probably not. Manlier? I certainly think so. More of an asshole? This shouldn't even be a question. Of course.)

Phil-1: That's if I can get off of work for more than one day. They're not very nice about that sort of thing. It'd be way easier if it were still in Woonsocket.

Phil-2: The Ballad of Barry Allen and The Music of You are both really good songs. I reccommend them more than Stress, actually. Consider them sent.

Darkdata: The art of Sim Battle is very simple, really. One enters the forum with a character in mind. This character acts, as in an RPG or fighting game, as the user's avatar within that world. Typically they have a physical description, a set of abilities (or lack thereof), and a personality and motivation for who they are or why they're there. It's a lot easier than it seems. Once you have an idea in mind, you list all of the ways you can describe him or her in the "Profiles" thread, which acts, appropriately, as the character's profile within the arena.

To battle someone, you post a thread with a "challenge", or join a pre-existing one that allows you to join in. Typically this is a free-for-all fight, or an open challenge that has yet to have a foe in it. This allows you to obtain a proper opponent for your first battle.

The fight usually opens with each character describing the way they enter the area in which the fight will take place. It can be as simple as walking into an arena or as complex as crash-landing in a vast jungle on an alien planet. It all depends on the circumstances of the battle, really. An excellent example of the Acmlm's Board style of sim-battle can be found here, penned by none other than the grandmaster himself, Kirbynite. It really is all about just describing what your character does. It's a little bit strange at first, because you're expecting some kind of rhyme or reason to the battle itself, but soon you learn that it's not about winning or losing; it's about writing and performing. A bit like GURPS.

I like roleplaying, but don't know if I could sim battle or otherwise freeform. I grew up with dice. I'm of the mentality that a roleplayer should always play in the best interest of the character as best he/she can while staying within character. I dunno if I could roleplay an attack failing without some real reason for it to fail or the dice telling me so.

I'm NOT a powergamer and I think heavy roleplay light dice is the way to go, but I do believe in the random element out of player control being necessary sometimes.

My question is... how does it really work w/ random chance and no DM? A lot of people swear by freeform roleplaying, so it must be enjoyable. How does one adjust? *Eyes his stack of 1st and 2nd Ed. AD&D books...* Old habits die pretty hard.
