OK, normally when an uncle comes in my house (one of my non-ROM hacking friends) I turned off the computer. But my mother complaining about my uncle does not know about illegal ROMS played with an emulator. But I felt uncomfortable with people seeing me ROM hack or playing an illegal ROM. Next Thing my mother told me that downloading ROMS is a same thing as Downloading Music or an illegal movie. Do I really steal money from affiliated gaming corporate? But they never found me yet or they would have sued me for it.

Yes. Downloading roms is just as illegal as downloading music or movies or pirated software.

On Stifu's point, get a brain. No one gets caught, some people get caught for hosting the files but they never go looking for you. Stop being so paranoid about your uncle. Finally, take en English course to work on your grammar, its horrible.

...

Use common sense. Your family is seriously messed up if they're going to bitch at you for playing roms, and you're no better for being so paranoid about it. Grow up.

You are all against me. Even Peter_ac. I can't deal with Privacy or Piracy anymore. If they don't know it fine! I'll keep it that way as long they don't bitch about me.

You all think it's joke would'nt you. But I'm that damn serious.

The legality in question warrants as much worry as ripping the tag off a bed matress. That's about all you have to worry about.

Believe me I downloaded tons of roms for every system and no one sued me or got into trouble and my parents don't care if I download roms. You are not stealing any money because you don't have the real game, but you do have the image of the game, but when you beat the game you can get rid of it and its not really stealing.

Its a bit of a morale dilemna. I mean, on one hand, the material is copyrighted property of the owner, but on the other hand, a lot of these games are almost impossible to aquire, especially, if like me, your not allowed to purchase goods over the internet. I have no qualms about downloading games for old consoles like the Super NES or the Master System, but downloading games for consoles like the GBA that are readily available in stores, for me, is morally bad. Its all about your perspective in th end and what you consider to be good or bad.

The companies don't LIKE you downloading roms obviously but they have absolutely no interest in going after you in the first place. It's pointless. They'd rather go after the SUPPLIERS (read: web sites) since they're the ones making the material available. The police aren't going to go after the guy who bought a few pirated PS2 games from someone, they're going to go after the guy who sold the games since he's the one profiting off it.

Whever the authorities chase you down or not, it all comes down to what you believe is ethically correct. Its extremely unlikely that downloading roms will get you into trouble, but if what your doing to you seems to go against your morales, then you shoulds stop. Likewise with the reverse.

Insey: Don't stress it, the feds, cops, etc. have more important things to worry about. With all the rapes, murders, terrorism, AIDS, world hunger, war, avian bird flu, and any horrible thing that goes on in the world, having ROMS ain't no biggie. My cousin is gonna give me his modded Xbox (not 360) I'm gonna rent alotta games at Blockbuster so I can make copies for myself that I missed out on, that doesn't mean I'm gonna sell them to people. I have a Sega Dreamcast and my brother in New Jersey made me copies of all dreamcast isos he found for me, but I won't go out and sell them.

So just relax and have a Heineken.

So we all got it. Downloading ROMs is illegal. The real question is the morality. You don't have the game, you want to play it, but there's no legal way without going to eBay and hoping that the item (plus the console if you don't have that) isn't for sale for an extraordinary price.

So have the Heineken even if you're underage.

Nah, I would say they are corperate loving rightist people.

Note though, I hadn't heard about any person getting arrested for downloading NES and SNES rom images. Most lawsuits I hear about is about thoose 100 games in 1 controllers, and not random kids getting lawsuits. :/

In my case, it was actually my dad who introduced me to it. I must say that I was rather negative against piracy but now I don't really care, and now even goes so far that i'm planning to vote on a party with a pro-piracy opinion.

Technically, downloading roms is illegal but people rarely cares about that and the risk of getting caught by some company is astronomical small.

Download all you want.
