As you all don't know, I had a previously made hack called "Mario Grey." It was a black and white hack. The idea was great, but the graphics looked like angry crap, and the level design was the most generic, boring excuse for a game. I am remaking it - all of it - so it looks good and plays well. I'm going to release a demo really soon.

(And to those who are wondering why I'm not working on my other hack, it's corruped)
SCREENSHOTS:

The title - The level in the backround not done (Hence the blue sky).

Bayside Cliffs OW.

First level. (I know, not the best bending pipes GFX, but I made them myself, what do you expect?)

The three basic enemies: Chain Chomps, Comps, and that weird thing.

Mmm, yeah. Some comment here.

New cement block. Yipee. Oh, and jumping chomps.

O|\/|g !t'5 T3H A\/\/50m35T G4X! Ahem, not seriously.

Lastly, combining ropes. Woo.

I like it. Really gives an old-school feel to the game. You could work the graphics a little, though. Not having to worry about colors could really help you make better graphics.

I dunno. It seems kind of... boring? Or maybe it's just abstract. Well, I guess only the finished product will tell the truth about this stuff. All I know is that the pipes are hurting my eyes.

The chain chomps look like crap, sort of. Seriously. If you can't draw, I suggest you rip graphics from another game. Like, SMB3. Those had some rad chomps. No one will mind if it's been done before: whatever it is, it's better than what you have there.

How do the ropes "combine"? I'm kind of confused. It doesn't look very... good. At all.

Also, everything needs more shading.

These are only beta graphics, the finished graphics will look good. The actual thing is fun, I just cant take a good screenshot. Only one level has a bunch of pipes.

So just imagine the game with better looking graphics.

Well, you should have a reason for having a grey palette. "It has never been done before" or "It's an interesting concept" or any variation is not a valid excuse, either. Perhaps the game takes place in an earlier time. Whatever the case, the graphics and the levels should fit the grey theme. And add some variation. You could have a western/desert world that is brown-shaded, for example.

This looks just like what Super Mario Land should have been. Nice work.

Oh, yeah, the plot. Bowser used his magic to turn all of Mushroom Kindom into black and white. That attracted chain chomps and stuff, which bowser took over to attack Mario.

EDIT: New graphics:

And you couldn't just rip the chain chomps!? I'd say you would've been better off.

I cannot complain about the palettes though. At least you won't have to change them from level to level.

*in a Ben Stein voice* Wow, grey is good. I never would've thought of that... wow.

You should call it Mario Noir because of the fact that it's B&W. Keep up the good work.

The chain chomps are looking better, but still need a lot of work. It would make a lot more sense to simply rip them from SMB3. Also, look near the top left of the screenshot. There's a ledge there that has a diagonal ledge floating over it.

Few problems with this... One, how long has Bowser himself had Magic? And two, what is the purpose of doing this? It doesn't help him at all. The chain chomp thing seems to have been totally accidental, looking at how you put that.

I agree, the story needs work. They grey idea is ok, it does kinda gives it an oldschool feeling. But what you should it is pixelate everything a bit more so its kinda Gameboy-ish. That would look awsome.

I disagree. Pixelating it more would essentially mean halving the size of everything, which wouldn't allow nearly enough detail. What really needs to be done, is that everything needs the number of colors (well, shades of gray...) in it reduced.

Instead of pixilating it, or reducing the number of shades, you could just use more Gameboy mario graphics from games like 6 Golden Coins or Wario Land. That would make the game much more nostalgic.

Because the gameplay of Mario World is so much better than those games. I just like the graphics in them. A couple of the Wario tilesets are available at the ExGFX Workshop by the way.

Bowser had magic in SMB1's plot, actually.

The chain chomp story thing I'll work on. And as I said, these aren't the final graphics. But people who know enough about Mario games know that bowser has magic. He's just too lazy to use it in the newer games....

Ha ha ha. Super Mario World is glitchy as hell, the enemies are either boring or reused, they messed up the tried and true Goombas, Mario doesn't control tightly enough, and the levels aren't nearly as varied or interesting as most Mario games. Let's face it: LM's the reason we're here.

Now, SecretGlitch: Kyouji (Alastor the Stylish) does know a lot about Mario. He's just, well, stupid like that. He tends to get these easy things wrong for some reason. (dropped on head? paint chips?)

You never do see Bowser actually use magic, though. He always gets Kammy or Kamek or somebody to do it for him. So... he's turned the place into black and white for no real reason so we're now looking at colorless graphics. Great plot. Really.

Even if those chain chomp graphics were only for a demo or something, they'd still be terrible. They don't look anything like the black wide eyed metallic barking things that we know from Super Mario 64, the Mario RPGs, Yoshi's Island, etc.

That "weird thing" isn't cool either. He looks like something a 6 year old might whip up in Microsoft Paint and not, well, an enemy.

Your ropes should be shaded. They're nice, but definately should be shaded.

I think that name's been used.

Hey, at least this is one hack that won't have bad status bar palettes.
