you don't need ASM for this. just use the extendent animation in Lunar Magic

There was another method of making Rain and Snow, by putting it on Layer 3 or something. Let's see...

another way is to edit exgfx animations to a 'falling rain' and put it on layer 1 acting like tile 25. _¬

Actually, what I did in those two was:

1. Select 4 tiles in any of the 4 GFX files, these tile slots must remain blank in EVERY level. I used 0xF1, F2, F3 and F4.

2. Open the 16x16 editor, and select tile 0x25. Edit it to use the following 8x8 tiles:

F1 F2
F3 F4

3. Then simply make the animation appear as a 4x4 line over 0xF1 in the level in which you want it to rain /snow. You may also need to go through some of your FG 16x16 tiles, and where ever F8 is, replace it without wither F1, 2, 3, or 4, depending on where the 8x8 tile is on the 16x16 tile.

Does that help?

Layer 3 GFX are loaded once, when you start the game, and never touched again. You might be able to hack the ExGFX loading routine to replace those tiles instead of Layer 1/2, based on a list of "special" level numbers or something, but Lunar Magic would have issues with this, of course...

I think that'd be especially difficult, seeing as layer 3 graphics have a different format and everything. It'd probably be easier to write your own layer 3 ExGFX system. Of course, you'd need to restore the old graphics somehow.

How does that layer 3 rain thing work? I guess the ExGFX file must somehow control it… could someone explain to me how it works?
