Posted this in my LJ.

So before my game today, I swing my the Goodwill in Westport, because they're nice like that. Rich people donate the coolest shit. So anyway, I'm looking for games, when I stumble on an iMac for surprisingly cheap (I'd seen one in Stamford for $125, this one was less). Tangerine or whatever color that is, first run (as in, not a slot-loading CD drive, but a tray). Fire it up, it works, thankyouverymuch.

So after the game, I come home and set up the iMac. Aw bugger, it's just OS 8.5. So no OS X for me, as I don't think this can support it. But let's see what's on here. Huh, Office 98, so I can use this for, ya know, useful things. Previous owners used Earthlink, but I won't need that, just need to figure out how to use it with DSL. Something about leases, okay... what's this file called "LETTER OF INSTRUCTION"? Wow, it has Quark, guess I could lay out a paper on this bad bo--WHAT THE FUCK?!

(That was about when the file opened. Here's what I saw.)

So there's that. Further down, there's details on safe deposit boxes, a mortgage in Bridgeport, and other financial info. As you could see, the letter dates back to January 1, 2004. There's other files from last summer involving renting out a house and establishing a CD in someone's name. Email inbox is all spam, latest from September 10th, but this person (I have a name, I don't know what I'll do with it) was using it then.

This really feels like the set-up for some bad movie or novel.

I would bury the computer, honestly. It'll make the bad people slightly less likely to murder you.

What the...?

If that's a joke, they obviously put a lot of work into doing so. If not...wow. Just. Wow. It really does sound like something out of a bad book.

I dunno. I'd be inclined to report this (or at least enquire to) to the police. There is a possibility the machine was stolen or something.

Hmm, I don't recall seeing any human guinie-pig research going on at Yale Model Congress this fall...

Perhaps we need to go straight to the heart of the problem? Call Yale, if they don't reply forget it, if they give a reason in less then an hour accept it, and if they take longer then an hour and give an answer, call the police. =P

The more poignant question is why he addresses the file to "his children". If it was really meant for his biological children, what happened to them? Or was he just some creepy guy?

The best course of action would -OBVIOUSLY- be to go to Yale and play with his body.

Doesn't seem that wierd. The previous owner probably just typed that out in there, printed it out and forgot about it, then later donated the computer to the Goodwill. He's probably still alive, he just wanted to make sure his wishes would be carried out if he did die.

Wow, that's just freaky.

I'd probably take that to the cops, and when it's not needed by them anymore, wipe all of those files....

I'd give the hard drive (or a copy of all its information) back to its rightful owner and wipe all of their personal information off of it, if possible.

Weird. Yeah, I'd definatly look into that. It's probably just a will of sorts though. Like, s/he probably donated his body to science (you can do that).. and s/he wants his children to carry on his wishes after death. Like, when you become a doctor.. all the students have to dissect a corpse. That's where the corpses come from.. people who donated their bodies to science.

It's quite morbid. And you've stumbled upon the perfect start to a horror movie. Like the time me and my friends had a keg at this abandoned beach. It was the perfect beginning to a horror movie. Especially because the moon was red.. and it was a night of wreckless teenage fun. Something about those two factors equates to "I know what you did last summer, seriously.. so you should run and hide. Part 3."

Could be a case where the... authorities... had to clean out the house and ended up giving a lot of stuff to Goodwill, in which case it's just creepy but perfectly legal.

Strange and eerie but likely NOT possessed or cursed. :\

Meh, sounds more like someone forgot to clean the machine before selling it. Hell, I would do a clean reinstall if I was going to sell one of my computers. :/

Well, if the letter hints which the orginal person is he could try to contact them.
