As far as I know, this isn't the classic newbie question, but I'm preparing for "LOL JESUS...NOT AGAIN" anyway.

As much as I say that I'll make a ROM, I never actually tried until now, I decided to get serious, and see what kind of craziness I can pull up. First things first, an Overworld. I redid the Yoshi's Island place to a big grassland strictly for testing, do note that I won't be using this for my ROM, this is strictly testing.

Anyway...

My first problem is that.. Wether I beat a level or not, I'm able to goto all the levels without beating any of them. How do I make it where one must beat a level in order to proceed to the next?

My next problem is that, it seems that whenever I beat my first level, THIS happens:
http://img147.imageshack.us/my.php?image=atrap9xp.jpg

It may be hard to tell, but I wanted the path to the north of me to be revealed, instead, some weird...unknown path event happens to the left of me. I'm assuming this is an event problem, with that in mind, any idea how I do events?

For the love of god, if it's in the FAQ, just say it is, that's fine. I'll look harder. But the first question I would like to have an answer to other than "look @ faq"

Thanks alot.

Your second problem is related to the events. They have to be set properly if you want the paths to appear right. As for the first problem, you need to look in the Initial Level Setting Flags in the overworld editor. Those options that are checked are likely causing your problems.

I wanted to add ( BUT YAY NO EDIT BUTTON ) that I can't fnid out how to remove the smoke there, the smoke that was originally over Yoshi's House. Is it possible to remove it? Or must I just get creative with it?

As for events, I'm having trouble finding out how to set them by referring to the FAQ.

To remove the smoke, open the Overworld editor, press the Lakitu button, click on the smoke, and press "delete" on your keyboard. As for your other problem...yeah. That FAQ is kind of dull and non-descriptive. I'll see if I can make a better description than that.

It's going to take a long time. If I do it, it'll take about a week at most (three or four days at best, one if I spend the entire day, but it's late right now so...) to write up the whole thing in a way so that most people could understand it (images would be included). But unless you're that patient, it's best you try to follow the text version.

That proved useful, Simon. Now, is there any way I can edit the pallette colors for the overworld? Like maybe if I wanted the first area to be snowy. It seems like everything I try just leads it to be green grass anyway. =(

For that, first boot up the overworld editor. Next, check under the overworld menu. Select "Edit Colors and Palettes". When you get there, you are free to make edits to the colors. Just make sure they look good.

Also, I can't delete the Yoshi's house smoke. I try, and at the bottom it says:

No sprites selected that can be automatically deleted.

Overworld > Edit Sprite List. Change Smoke x 2 to Nothing. (This will remove both smokes)

And don't forget to click "Save RGB's to ROM" when you're done.

Once again, I must thank you all for helping me figure more stuff out. Unfortuneately though, I'm once again at a snag.

Earlier I mentioned that the FAQ wasn't too helpful when it came to laying down events. Lordlazer's FAQ didn't mention some things either, like how to determine what events go where. Like, how do I determine opening up one path will be done by activating Event 1? How will I determine that opening up another path will be done by activating Event 2? Etc...

Also, it seems that when I lay down event paths, the surrounding area comes up blue. I'm not sure if this is natural, but here's a screenie to help show you what I mean:

For reference, no. I ended up not messing with pallette's or colors.

Use PgDn and PgUp to select the event to edit while you're in the layer 2 event editor mode, and watch the status bar at the bottom to know when you're at the spot you want to be.

After that, place the tiles as you want, and then set your level tile to activate the correct ending.

That helps thanks. But any idea why the surrounding tile always comes up blue? I pick up the tiles from the Layer 2 Event Tile Selector...

Edit:

Man, this is annoying. I can like... take a tile directly from another event, drag and drop, and there will be no blue around it. But if I take a path tile from the Layer 2 Event Tile Selector like I'm supposed to, it'll be blue. I've tried all the pallette's. =/

It's blue because it is blueshifted to highlight that it is a part of the current event. If you change events it won't be blue, nor will it be blue in the game.

Oooh. Thanks. I was wondering what the hell was going on here. More questions to come, possibly. But I should be fine for a while now.

How do I make it where a level tile could open up two events? Like one for regular exit, one for secret exit? Is it possible?

No, those are not "this event" colours. Those blue marks signify tiles that have already been displayed before your current one, and red one are for tiles that have not shown up yet in the L2 event editor.

You know exactly what I meant. He pasted them in and they were blue.

Edit: To Crysillion: Secret exits activate the level's event +1.
