Some spyware has disabled my Task Manager.
Does anyone know how to reenable it? I use Windows XP. |

Four solutions to your problem on one page
Also, you should scan for spyware so you can make sure it won't disable task manager again |

Aw crap, everything I just typed got deleted. Well the first thing worked so thanks.
EDIT: The spyware also cause a new but huge (130MB) hidden system file hiberfil.sys to appear in my C-drive's root. It wasn't there before and is gone (judging by the extra 100MB) when in safe mode. Anybody know how to remove this? (edited by Ten on 02-07-06 02:45 PM) |

That's the file your memory gets dumped to when you use the Hibernate feature. For some reason Windows doesn't delete it when you start up. (Maybe so it can boot from that again if the power goes out.) | |||

Whoa, I hibernated just now, more then one hibernation file... Cosmic.
I think I know how that happened now that I think about it. I hit turnoff by mistake when shutting down, since I could not use task manager to end Rundll32.exe I went right back into the shutdown menu and hit hibernate. But it turned off instead, and hiberfill must of been written anysince shutting down took so long. I just disabled and reenabled hibernation in power setting. The hibernation file disappeared and reappeared and respectivley. I'm guessing the hibernation file now is now some kind of reserve mode, as it was not present during operation until now. As I now know that the spyware has messed my registry, I'm still blaming the spyware. (edited by Ten on 02-07-06 05:58 PM) |
