OK so.

I figured that this would be a fantabulastic idea to do, why don't we talk about movies that rocked, and will rock for a long time.

We'll see how this goes, I guess.

Why don't we start the ball rolling with one of my favorite films, Snatch.

It has it all, action, comedy, memorable quotes, plot that manages to tie it all up in the closing seconds...

what say you?

Do I even have to say the movies I'm thinking of?

Hint:
Spoiler:
It's Star Wars

Edit: I'll add some other movies in here later.

i heart huckabee's.

It's simply one of the greatest films ever. It explores buddhist philosophies.. and how they can affect your everyday life. If you go through the whole process of separating yourself from your identidy. It's a comedy, but an intelligent comedy.

Oh, and of course *points to top of post*. The Corpse Bride was one of the best animated films to hit theaters... ever. Well, since the Nightmare Before Christmas. I'm absolutely obsessed with Tim Burton. And I was obsessed with him before it was trendy to be.. . "Ed Wood"? Anyone. Brilliant. "Frankenweenie"... more brilliance.

Huckabees is a great, great movie. The whole Existential philosophy, and how they follow it and depict it in the movie, is amazing. And the fact that they can do it in a humorous way? Genius. That's the sort of movie to watch when you need to distract yourself.

ok ok this isn't quite what I had in mind, but we can work with it.

What I was thinknig was take one "classic" movie and run with it, but I'm a flexible guy.

Ah, I see. We could do that. Snatch was a good'un. I do so love heist movies to begin with, and it has that great humor factor. You know, that wry, funny feel.

Plus, Jason Statham, Dennis Farina, and Brad Pitt are awesome.

Interestingly enough, my friend Mark bought the special edition, made by "superbit" (don't ever get shit by them), and in the little making of Snatch featurette, Guy Ritchie stated that he intended the movie to be serious, it just came out funny.

I love Jason Statham, everything about him just reeks of coolness. I really wanna get the coat he wears in that movie, it's pretty dope.

Snatch is in some ways "Lock stock and 2 smoking barrels" for a US audience, when a sequel to LSATSB was announced I leapt for joy, as the ending was quite literally a cliffhanger, so I was a bit let down when I discovered that Snatch was another story entirely. That said I have to say it's a really good and funny film. Brad Pitt's "pikey" accent is spot on (I grew up around some caravan obsessed gypsies myself). ,

Also it seems that the editing style has influenced later Brit films (check out the "getting up" sequence in Shaun of the Dead). Guy Richie showed so much promise - it's a shame Revolver and Swept Away are utter tosh.

To be honest, I OWN Snatch, but I've yet to really sit down and analyze the film. My friends whom are film theory students all assure me it is a very sound picture, as far as the art of it goes, but they have suggested that I watch it one night when I have a lot of time to really enjoy it for the merits it presents.

Mind you, the parallel that one of them suggested was Rushmore - which is more along the lines of Tenebaums or Life Aquatic (DUH!) but still a good movie. Anyone wanna weigh in on that?

Rushmore's kinda a hokey film... I didn't really get anything out of it. I dunno, maybe I need to watch it again, but Although it was a GOOD movie, it wasn't very funny. So much for showing it on Comedy Central.

Also, if anyone's been following Anya and Elmo's lately, I've remarked on multiple occasions that Brad Pitt in Snatch is quite possibly the very image of male perfection. That said, he fits in perfectly with Snatch's funny, snappy atmosphere and swinging cast.

As far as classic films go, I'd also like to take note that Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs is insanely amazing.

Yes it does. I love the ending, especially the audio in the background.

And of course, I can never listen to Stuck in the Middle With You without thinking of the torture scene.

Why not? Superbit DVDs are some of the finest, if not the finest when it comes to video and audio quality. Only when the next-generation hi-def formats (Blu-ray and HD-DVD) come out will you see something better. But maybe you're whining because Superbits generally don't have extras. This is because all the space on the disc is used mostly for the video and audio. But some Superbits, like Snatch, have a second disc of extras, but there are few of those.

Anyway, Snatch is a good movie, but Guy Ritchie's first movie--Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels--is so much better.

And I find it funny that of the films mentioned so far, the Star Wars Trilogy are the only movies that came out before the '90s. Where are the older classics, people? I don't really have any desire to name any myself. I'm just interested in seeing others' responses.

Rushmore is very funny, by the way, but not exactly "laugh-out-loud" type of humor. I love that movie, and The Royal Tenenbaums.

The overall presentation annoyed me, the fact that they plastered their logo over evreything, and that the first disc of Snatch didn't have audio for me

As for older classics, I guess we can shift gears to...oh I dunno. How about The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Spaghetti western at its finest. Clint Eastwood as The Man With No Name, epitome of cool. Possibly the greatest western ever?

It shames me to say it, but I haven't seen any of Eastwood's westerns.

I definitely need to do that.

"All About Eve"

Really, what else needs to be said? It's a movie that gets better the second time you watch it.

Not to mention it has Bette Davis.

I haven't seen a lot of westerns, but yeah, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is my favorite so far, and is one of my top 10 favorite movies. Sergio Leone's Once Upon a Time in the West is cool too, but just not nearly as grand and beautiful, IMO.

Now I just gotta see the first two movies with The Man with No Name, plus A Fistful of Dynamite. Waiting for the special editions of those movies to get released in the US, and I'm really hoping they don't package Dynamite as "Duck, You Sucker".
