This has nothing to do with plot-related spoilers, or inevitabilities. I'm talking about moments in games where you were completely in control, that surprised you, perhaps giving you a "okay, what the hell do I do!?" moment of thought. For example, going out into the Market after becoming an adult in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. A long story short, in this topic, we post memories of gameplay moments where you were in control. This can be anything, such as beating a difficult level in a game so you can see the next one, reaching a certain point, and so on.

Personally, I pretty much went into a trance when I reached the Forest Temple in OoT for the first time.

Yeah. I think you hit the nail on the head with that OoT.

Another big one was seeing my first summon in FF7. That was impressive. Another was playing Rise of Nations, that was just stunning to see so much good come together.

Every second FFTA was pretty Keanu Reeves "whoa" worthy.

Finally getting Kratos (From God of War) powered up and pulling off some fucking ball clapping moves that completly kicked the enemies ass.

Oh and Resident Evil 4, the first time I purchased the Magnum. And used it. =O

Playing as Reinhardt through Castlevania 64, I happened into a room filled with vampires. Unfortunately, I had next to no health and only thirtysome gems to dish out the holy water. Regardeless of the odds being stacked against me, I thoroughly thrashed the lot of 'em and proceeded directly to a boss enemy, which I also vanquished - all the while still not healed from my already dismal levels of health. Long story short, I thought I was going to die about two dozen times but ended up making it to the last area of the game before Drak himself took me out. Most of my whoaments take place when I manage to pull off some feat under extreme circumstances.

The Megaman X series delivers an easy three or four whoa moments per hour, which is quite a high ratio indeed.

I should also throw in my first combo in any fighting game. It was King of Fighters '94 with Terry Bogard when I was like 5.

Dude, SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS.

Resident Evil 4 was just a whoa experience, in general. That game is simply f5cking amazing. When I got the Chicago Typewriter for the first time, I had one of those 'whoa' moments.

But Shadow of the Colossus really delivered some awe-inspiring emotions.

Just climbing on top of these hulking beasts and somehow killing them with your wussy little sword and bow...that was just awesome.

I still get chills when I jump on the ones that fly. The rush you get is just bewildering.

Shadow of the Colossus is just an amazing experience and a true example of a work of art.

The moment you hit the Dusty Dunes Desert in Earthbound.

It's like, "Whoa, sunlight."

I was humming that song that goes like "I can see clearly now that the rain is gone..." the entire time I ran through it on my latest play.

It's really a turning point in the game, where you're not restricted by being inside of Threed any longer and you don't have to worry about being attacked by Zombies and monsters you're not sure you can beat.

It's at this point where the game balances a little more, too, so that the equipment you buy actually helps you keep pace with your foes.

The game's plot becomes more in-depth at this point, and you start to see the world around you in a much brighter scope.

It's at this point where the game starts hinting that you're going to be doing some backtracking later on. You're not so linear anymore -- not like you go to Fourside then to the fifth town the the sixth, because you're still coming back to the DDD for the Yogurt Machine, then you're learning to teleport, then you're mining, and so on and so forth. And even then you're still coming to get some good stuff from Magnet Hill.

Really, whoa. Fans of the game can appreciate it.

I've only ever gotten this feeling in three games: SSX Tricky, Mario Kart DS, and SSBM. It's when I suddenly stop fumbling and making mistakes and just (to take the latter as an example) go "pow - whack - bam - blaow - spikeowned." Every hit connects, I know exactly what my enemy's doing and what I can do to counter it, and it feels like nothing can go wrong. This only lasts between five and ten seconds, but it is the best.

edit: I think I got the wrong idea from the OP's use of the word "control." I see what you mean now, and the short answer is "most of Half-Life 2." The fact that you're in control for virtually every event in the game is a big help.

Wow, and here I thought I was the only one ever.

Whoa moments? The sand hoverboarding level in Klonoa 2.

Unless of course I initially misunderstood, in which case I'm like Zem, but it tends to only happen in fighting games for me.

The Freakin' Choco Mog?!

One of my more recent "whoa" moments was like the opening real time cinema for Metal Gear Solid 3. That whole game was like that for me, actually.

And I also felt all tingly inside when Cloud escapes the Shinra building on the motorcycle in that cinema which cued the crazy motorcycle theme.

Star Fox 64: So... many... ships... so much destruction... and I destroyed most of them. That was a great feeling.

Practically any SNK fighting game boss, mostly KoF, the first time they pull of an SDM and I'm helpless to do nothing but watch.

Watching Igniz from '01 wail on me for ten seconds without a way out my made me cry.

Yea, Igniz sucked. Just like Goenitz, Krizalid, and Zero before him. The only tolerable boss fight was with the Orochi team and Orochi himself in '97. That was actually fun. And more epic.

Krizalid in '99, if you could use him, had a freakin infinite. Dash-grab, hit, dash-grab, hit, ..., SDM that does 33 hits.

That right there struck me as CHEAP!

Orochi was fine but had the issue of being fast and countering cheaply at points (i.e. that damn soul crush grab S/DM...he's so fast that it's an easy clinch if you're not ready).

Rugal in '98 wasn't so bad (dodge roll city). Rugal in '02 was a fucking monster if you didn't avoid him.

All Zero had on him was that goddamn cape upper. In '01, he was much worse though.

Goenitz...shit...I had so much trouble taking that fscker down the first time.

Yea, Rugal was a joke compared to some of those other bosses. My team usually sticks to the ground with some dashes and such thrown in. (I use Terry, Joe and Ryo)
