Hikari: Tch, a cat that size should've atleast broken all the way through.. Alright, Miss Mitra, get on my back. Seems like the others are too dazed to help you out.

Hikari pulled out a pair of leather gauntlets from her pouch, and placed them on her hands.

Mitra: Hm.. Ah think Ah'll place it on mah hair.

Hikari: We can figure out how to do that when we get back-- Oh.. You.. got it on your hair.

Hikari looked at Mitra, who was smiling. The red jewel was, indeed, on Mitra's hair, like a normal jeweled hairpin. Hikari didn't want to understand how it worked and signaled for Mitra to get on her back.

Hikari: Geh.. Miss Mitra.. you're gettin' a bit heavy..

Mitra: Eek! You've.. found me out.. Ah'm sorry.. Ah've been trying to keep from eatin' those foreign candies...

Hikari: Well.. I can still carry you..

Hikari walked over to the edge, and simply hopped down. She thrusted her hand at the wall, and actually managed to slowly slide down.

Hikari reached the ground with no hassle. She stepped away from the rock wall, and started to walk towards Glenn, with a slight crunching sound from every step taken on the dried up mud.

Hikari: Looks like that doozy of a fortune teller we met the other day was right about us not wearing anythin' fancy today, Glenn.

Mitra hopped off of Hikari's back just as they reached Glenn. Both Hikari and Mitra held out their hands to help Glenn out.

Glenn: It wouldn' have been a problem if Johnathan hadn' pulled that stunt...

Glenn took Hikari and Mitra's hands and after a little effort on his and their parts they managed to pull him out of the ground.

Glenn: Or if I hadn't OTed *mumble* stupid genetic disorder..

Hikari: Well, I'm glad we're all doin' ok now. I can settle with goin' home and bathin' all these sores away.

Mitra: Oh yes, that sounds lah-ke a lovely idea.

Hikari: ... Say.. Glenn. Since you're here.. what happened to the horses? I would've like to move on quickly.. but Johnny's bein' a bit slow.

Nova: Don't tell me I need to play chauffer after all...

The rogue looked around but couldn't see the horses anywhere. Either they'd been smarter than Glenn (a good possibility, he smirked to himself) and gotten away from the area, something else had happened. The sun was beginning to set by this point.

Nova: If they're not around here, we'd best think of starting a fire as it'll get mighty cold pretty soon.

Glenn: I figure they went their own ways with nobody watching them... It's no matter.

Glenn pulled a small flute from his pocket and played a short melody on it. Immediatly afterwards a neighing could be heard and all the horses started approaching our group. Glenn climbed back onto his horse.

Glenn: Works like a charm.

Hikari: Nova, you don't need to be hanging around us anymore. You can go on home now.

Mitra: The horses sure went far!

Hikari: Oh yeah. Kinda makes me wonder why they were not even near this area. I'm sure they could've stayed out of the mud and still be in the area...

A small hole in the ground appeared next to Mitra. HIkari took notice of this and immediately pushed Mitra out of the way.

Mitra: Eep! Is something the matter, Miss Hikari?

All of a sudden, something long and pointy reached out of the hole and stabbed Hikari by her leg. She gritted her teeth as she quickly pulled out her dagger from her boot. She cut off what was stabbing her and impaled the creature that was inside of the hole.

She pulled up her dagger, with the creature attached to it.

Hikari: Damned Gohma critter.

The creature had one huge eye, which was pretty much skewered by Hikari's knife. It's body was very small, probably no larger than one foot. The body consisted of two legs and used to have one tail.

Strangely enough, it had a tiny ten gallon hat.

Hikari: I'd consider it cute if it didn' prick me. This must be the lil' bastard that done scared off the horses worse than Johnny's rain.

Mitra: Miss Hikari, are you ok?

Hikari flung the dead creature off into the air. She then pulled the tail out of her leg, flinching for a moment, and chucked it as well.

Hikari: Ah, yeah, I'm alright.

Mitra: Do you need me to heal you?

Hikari: Nah, it was just a little prick. No worse than sliding down rocks the wrong way. Come on, let's get back to town.

Hikari got onto a horse, and pulled Mitra up.

Nova: Well, if you're sure you're alright, I suppose I could be going now. Still, after what's happened, I'd like to make sure Miss Mitra gets back to town safely. Seems she's rather high on the kidnapping priority list, and at this point I'd like to know why. Also...

Nova rode his Sabrecat up to the horse Hikari was on, and leaned in and whispered to her.

Nova: I'd like to discuss with you the matter of my former employer and your ranch.

Mitra: Oh, don't worry about lil' ol' me. This thing happens every so often.

Hikari: Yeah. It makes me wonder how she keeps coming back even when we're not around.

Mitra: Miss Hikari, you should know, out of any ol' folk 'round here.

Hikari: "Ultimate Battle Strategy".. yeah yeah. I still think you're overlookin' something.

Hikari's irritation remained as Nova spoke to her.

Hikari: If it has anything to do with with protectin' the farm, forget it. Johnny boy's a bit new to the ranch, but with him workin', we've got more than enough protection.

Nova: It's a bit more than "protection" but I'll leave it at that for now. Meet me at the inn in town later and we'll talk. Well, if you're sure, then I suppose I'll be off. Later, all.

With that, the Great Sabrecat, with Nova on it, ran off into the sunset. Nova really hoped the town was indeed to the west of where they were, otherwise this grand exit would look rather silly.

Sudddenly, Nova realized that he was heading off into nothingness.

Just kidding

--------------------

Hikari: Argh, mercenaries just piss me off. He really thinks I'm going to speak with him with saying somethin' like that?

Mitra: Miss Hikari, is somethin' the matter?

Hikari: Ah.. No, nothin' at all.

Hikari watched the town get closer and closer.

"It sounded like someone wanted to target Outset Ranch again", she thought. "But they had hired a real pro. Oh, Dad.. if you an' Mom were still 'round, I wouldn' have to be worryin' like this."

Nova: I really hope she comes...couldn't blame her if she didn't trust me, of course.

Nova sighed. He had been a mercenary for too long. Something like this was a good time to drop it, and fight back against the system that had nearly enslaved him. But he would need allies. Then again, he chuckled, THEY would need allies to protect them from his former employer. And he'd be just the ticket. A mutual arrangement.

Nova: And then there's that assassin...

Mitra waved goodbye as Hikari finished fixing the horses back onto the empty milk wagon.

Mitra: Ya'll be safe now, ya hear?

Hikari waved as Mitra walked into the now closed saloon.

Hikari: She's the last person to be saying that.

She shook her head.

Hikari patted all the horses and took a step back.

Hikari: Glenn, you somehow called one horse too many again. Honestly, how do you get them ta come from so far? Ah, whatever. I guess I'll have to ride with him, since we can't fit him into the wagon.

Glenn: Something about the harmonics of the notes allows horses to hear it from a distance, I suppose... Though that doesn't begin to explain how they always show up so quickly...

Hikari: I suppose it's best to not think much about it. It's been a long day, so I don't want too much thinkin' now.

Hikari looked behnd her for a moment.

Hikari: Glenn, get the wagon movin'. I'll catch up.

Hikari directed her horse to turn around. She started heading a bit deeper into the town, towards the inn.

As she got closer, she started feeling a bit off. Her eyes grew narrow, as her mind started to race. Right before she got to the door, she pulled the reigns, and gave the horse a bit of a kick.

She took off to catch up to the milk wagon.

Nova checked his watch, for perhaps the fiftieth time that evening. He hadn't given the girl a time, but he figured it wouldn't take her this long to get back to town and see Mitra off. Guess she wasn't coming.

Nova: Damn fool. If she only knew what was good for her farm, she'd have heard me out. *sigh* Nobody trusts ya if you've been in the business long enough. That's why it's impossible to get out, I guess.

The sun had finally been relieved of its perch by the moon.

Hikari and company had made it to Outset Ranch. A redheaded girl, only slightly shorter than Hikari, opened the northeastern gate.

Hikari: We got tied up with stuff. Thanks for openin' the gate, Marin.

This girl had longer and shinier hair (which was tied up to a crazy pony tail) than Hikari, which was something, seeing as how Marin also worked at the ranch. She wore a light blue skirt and blouse, with gold and darker blue trimmings around the neck area, ends of the sleeves, and bottom of the skirt. She also had a long, pink ribbon that was tied around the left side of her waist.

Hikari: Anythin' happen while we were gone?

Marin: No, not really, Sis. Oh, actually, yes. Some nut's tryin' to trade his horse for a ride.

Hikari: A ride?

Marin: Yeah, he wants to be taken somewhere.

Hikari: Is he still here?

Marin: Mm-hm.

Glenn: ... A horse for a ride?

A short distance away, a man in a poncho and a dark cowboy hat of sorts with a large brim, almost like a sombrero but certainly not one, was talking to a patting a dark beige horse tied to a post. His face wasn't visible from this angle, but he had light brpwn hair.

???: These are good folk, Zig. You'll like it here.

Horse (Zig): *snort*

Standing across from the man was Nalon, current owner of the Outset Ranch. She was as tall as Hikari, and her haircolor and style were similar to Hikari's (except for the fluffed up bangs that were parted halfway on Nalon, and her hair was only shoulder length).

She wasn't related to Hikari and Marin, but some say they're cousins. It didn't really matter much, since they were all like family, anyway.

Nalon wore a short-sleeved, white blouse, and a long, indigo skirt. Ontop of those she had a yellow ascot, and a brown cloth infront of her skirt.

Nalon: We take good care of our horses here.. But.. I'm still not seein' why--

Hikari: Hey! What's this business about a horse for a ride?

Nalon: Oh, ya'll finally made it back? I was almost certain we'd be expectin' ya tomorrow.

Hikari: We know Mitra is always makin' it back whether we're there or not, but it's so hard to ignore it when she's kidnapped right there, y'know?

Hikari pulls the reigns of her horse a little bit to help it move in the right direction. The horse stopped infront of the man, Nalon, and the horse.

Hikari tilted a bit, like she was going to get off the horse. However, she just fell right off the horse and landed on her side.

Nalon: Hikari!

Marin: What's goin' on ov-- Sis!
