I have a question that I need some help on I want to upgrade my computers processor and memory.
My PC is a Gateway essential PC, processor is 433Mhz celeron- if I'm correct this PC should be using a socket 370 frame, if it is I would like to boost the power to at least 600Mhz celeron processor. If this is the case would this computer be able to handle it ? also I am aware that I'll need to update the BIOS but that **** Gateway company has not done another bios update since 5-21-2000 and I my computer has it already, will my PC accept the new processor if the bios is strong enough to detect it ? also my memory is 256MB if I use 2 stick of these will bios be able to accept it ?

I am looking at this website here for socket 370 to figure out how much I can upgrade it to, if I can only boost it to 500Mhz or not at all....... then screw it and nevermind.......

Right now I can't afford a new PC so please don't tell me to buy a new one when I don't have the money to get one.

Your best bet would be to search for the computer's exact model number on Gateway's site (or, failing that, Google), or e-mail their tech support. The majority of pre-built computers (especially from that era) use proprietary motherboard designs, and often can't be upgraded much beyond what they come with, if at all.

Socket 370 CPUs are currently about $7 dollars (according to pricewatch.com). I brief look at what pricewatch.com has says a Celeron with 600MHz goes for $14...

Fine, I am going to tell you that you're basically screwed then. They don't make socket 370 cpus that are worth a damn. All you'll be accomplishng is an upgrade from truely ancient to merely antique.

what the hell is wrong with you bass ?! all I am saying is that I don't have 400$ to go buy a new system or build one right now unlike you, if I had the damn money to get a new system I wouldn't have posted this thread! so please do me a favor and get off my case!

He does have a point. You'd be much better off saving up for a whole new system than trying to upgrade that.

Wow. If 470MHz is ancient, what's a 250MHz laptop?

I do have a point and I'm glad someone here sees it. The best socket 370 chip in existence is still so slow that it's not going to make a difference. It's essentially a waste of money. A much better idea would be to save up for a new system, even if it takes awhile. The worst CPU newegg even sells is a 2ghz Celeron.

Seriously, save up, upgrading a fossil is ultimately a waste of money.
If you're seriously hurting for cash, save up to get a Celeron-D for like $50 and get a generic $15 case, a $25 mobo with onboard everything, some cheapass generic ram. Total cost: less than $150 and it will totally blow away any upgrades you could ever make to a socket 370 machine.

Hell, check out the specs in my profile. That cost a mere $400 Canadian. (Excluding the hard drive and OS, already had those. ) Only thing I really feel it needs (so far) is more RAM, and another 256MB shouldn't cost too much. And I push my systems pretty hard (39 processes running, including lololol and Azureus). I'm sure you can put together something.

Look guys, its not like I don't know how build a computer I just masterd my college courses in A+ and Network+ just at the end of december.
I tell you what Bass, if you can find me a good 478 or 775 socket motherboard and no bull shitten (PCCHIPS or shuttle motherboards) with a processor at 2.2 gigahertz I'll find some some way to get the money and buy it.... I already have everything I need to build a new PC which is, White ATX tower case 40gig hard drive, 256MB of DDR ram DVD-RW+- double layer burner, DVD-CD-RW combo drive a good spare monitor, wireless mouse, keyboard and a CPU celeron 1.8 ghz I don't know if this CPU is bad or not its gave me problems with my first build of my custom built system, it destroyed a brand new motherboard 2 christmases ago...... PM me if you find anything I am willing to spend under 75 dollars for both parts.
