Someone join or I'll eat an innocent child =,,=
---
It is of course known that the connection between the worlds of the living and the dead is strongest at night. As such, deliberate travel between these worlds is often made after dusk, and the station is usually close to a burial ground. It was at the nearest graveyard to the Sim Battle Arena on a dark, clear night that someone re-entered the living realm.

Black clouds quickly gathered and formed a cyclone in the air above the cemetery, where a crevice grew in the ground. Green light shone from the crack as a hand emerged and grasped the lip. Slowly, the owner of this hand pulled himself up to the ground. When he finally stood at full height, the clouds dispersed and the fissure closed up.

Brushing his black, spiky hair out of his eyes, the figure gazed around the area. It seemed that no one was around to have noticed his appearance - lucky, for this stranger wouldn't have bothered explaining his story, but rather just knocked them out. He stood for a moment to examine his physical form, and get a feel for it; for a long time, he had existed only as a spirit, and a corporeal body took some getting used to.

He stopped when he felt a kind of pulse issue from the East. It seemed that his powers had made it with him through the trip; he was sensing a large amount of souls - powerful ones - from what he presumed was the Sim Battle Arena. Yet he felt another one much closer, possibly less than a mile away. Thinking that this person may be an example of the kind of warriors he could expect to find at the Arena, he headed in their direction.

A few minutes later, he had found his target and was stalking it from several yards, mostly hidden in shadow. The land was flat, but he blended into the darkness well enough. Yes, the one he followed did seem like a warrior from what he could tell... he would engage with this one as a bit of a re-aquanting with this world, and practice for what lay ahead. He drew a dagger from his belt, to catch the warrior's attention, loudly scraped it against a tree.

(ooc: Long time no see. Man, I sat here in indecision for minutes; Fight you, or watch you eat an innocent child? They're both so good! But in the end, there was only one choice.)

The man does not look up from his prayers. A single beam of soft white light, coming from somewhere in the sky, illuminates a small circle around him. Long, black hair rests against the darkened leather armor covering his back. Slowly, he stands, turning to face the one approaching. His skin is a pale white, and his eyes are violet, bottomless pits of darkness. His ears are pointed, but less so than his stare. From his belt, two curved silvery daggers hang without sheaths.

The act of rising reveals what he was praying to; A small stone carving of a young girl, wearing a beautifully inscribed dress, holding a sphere in one hand, waving with the other. The man snaps his long fingers, and a strong wind blows by. The statue seems to crumble into golden dust, which flies away in the night...

The man then speaks in reply. His accent is unusual and hard to place.

"Greetings, deathling. My name is Kuroi. And as is said throughout many of the cities in this world, I'd like to ask you to bring it on."

Kuroi draws both daggers at quite a high speed, then jumps high into the air, landing on a thick tree branch after completing two full forward flips. His light disappears as soon as he leaves it, but it seems as though he can find his way without it. A careful observer might notice a slight tightening in his features, showing intense concentration, and also perhaps that his black leather boots begin to be covered in vines. Kuroi stands ready for his opponent to come to him...

Kuroi could probably see his foe clearly now. He had black, shiny hair in a sort of spiky shape. His eyes glowed green, and had eye shadow around them. He wore a black coat with a tail that stopped at his calves, underneath which was a long sleeve shirt, also black, that extended to his palms. His hands were in stitches for some reason. The monochromatic ensemble was completed with black pants and boots.

He looked at Kuroi with a slightly impressed expression.

"Hm, I like your fast reactions and willingness to fight. You may know me as Jack, if you live past this eve."

Jack's left hand glowed lime green as he aimed it at Kuroi's lower half. A second later, a wispy green ball flew from his fingers to Kuroi. The attack was charged with a strange element unlike any found in this world - it was basically pure death. It would deal medium damage if it hit Kuroi, and have almost toxic effects.

Jack stepped back and held his knife arm ready.

Kuroi's eyes harden, as he... Drops a dagger? His left-hand dagger falls quickly, and point-first, burying itself deep into the ground. He makes a quick vertical slash with the other, which leaves behind a trail of pearly glimmers in the sky. As the green orb approaches, the stardust quickly rushes towards it, and as the two collide, Kuroi seems to be bracing himself for an explosion of some magnitude... But it never arrives. The two elements, in effect perfect opposites, merely cancel each other out. He doesn't quite manage to keep his surprise out of his voice.

"You seem quite confident in your abilities. My guess of deathling was not too far from the truth, I see..."

Kuroi's legs are beginning to take on qualities of plant matter. It seems somehow as though he is becoming one with the tree...

Jack raised an eyebrow as his attack was cancelled by Kuroi's. "That better not happen all the time," he muttered.

"I am quite confident in my abilites; they were specially made to be the weakness to all living things. With them, I exploit fear, pain, and any other mortal flaw. Are you going to move from that branch?"

Jack quickly spun away from the spot on the ground where Kuroi's dagger hit, expecting some kind of spell to issue from it, and stopped on the other side of the tree. There, he held his hand to it, and created fire that began spreading up to Kuroi's branch. Backing away a bit further, he laughed quietly with his hand behind his back, charging another death ball.

Kuroi jumps down from the tree limb, the vines around him unravelling into a pile at his feet. Somehow the tree burns unnaturally fast, reduced to ashes in seconds. As soon as he hits the ground, Kuroi charges at his opponent, his dagger veiled in the silvery light of life. He goes for a single stab, moving very quickly, then jumps backwards to stop any permanent melee from developing. It's quite possible that the pure energy of life could disrupt whatever dark magic holds Jack to this world, but it's too small a dose to banish even the weakest skeleton. Still, it's enough to show just what Jack is dealing with here...

"Hm. Such flaws are not present in all mortals... Often I consider them, not flaws, but strengths. Without fear there is no courage. Without pain there can be no joy. Thus do you find your own weaknesses, within those of mortals."

Kuroi smiles a grim smile.

Jack stepped backward and bent out of the way of Kuroi's dagger. As Kuroi's arm reached its limit, he tried to take a slice of his own at it, but wasn't quick enough.

Jack regained his stance, and paced a slow circle around Kuroi as he listened.

"The ones you speak of, who find strength inside themselves and use it, are alright with me. But there are others, cowardly and disgusting as a whole..." he shut his eyes for a moment, and then continued "You don't appear to be like them."

His death ball had finished charging, and had even gained a little extra power. Jack dived toward Kuroi, and with his left hand fired the death ball where the dagger had landed in the ground a couple of minutes prior. With this, he hoped to stop, or at least hinder whatever magic it might have been weaving. He then landed on his hands and sprung high into the air, spinning forward several times and soaring over Kuroi's head. As he just passed over his opponent, he quickly jabbed his dagger (which was also charged with the deathly element) toward Kuroi's skull. Should his movement go uninterrupted, Jack would land behind Kuroi on his left arm, spin around on it, and fall back on his feet to face the man again, dagger poised.

As the death ball impacts the dagger in the ground, it vanishes. Simultaneously, an equal-size orb of silvery energy appears at the tip of the other dagger, in Kuroi's hand. Seizing his sudden advantage, he rolls forward under his opponent's attack, then flips into the air. For an instant while his dagger points at Jack, Kuroi's eyes flash bright blue, and the sphere of light fires itself at high speed, aimed at the ground beneath Jack's feet. On impact, the sphere will explode into a fairly large sphere of destructive white magic, which could perhaps deal some serious damage to the target.

Kuroi lands heavily on his feet, continuing the rolling motion once more. Turning as he rises, he speaks to his opponent in a level tone.

"If that is so, then why do you seek battle with me?"

Jack leapt backward and avoided contact with the sphere, but couldn't dodge the large explosion that it created. He gritted his teeth and crouched, grabbing the ground, until it finished.

"Good thing I'm not bound to this realm by magic, or that might have hurt more."

He stood up and brushed his sleeves, and then pointed his arms at the ground. Six bright, red-pink shapes appeared on the ground around him.

"Why do I seek battle with you? First appearances can be deceptive. I don't completely know you, yet. Also, I'm a bit hungry for your skin."

His eyes flashed and he made an evil grin, licking is his lips. The last part could have been a joke, the way he said it.

A sword rose from each of the six circles on the ground, and floated magically by Jack, forming a ring. The glowing lights on the ground disappeared after this. Jack remained where he stood, with the blades looming ominously around him, twirling and slashing arbitrarily.

Kuroi gives a small chuckle.

"I use what works. As a humble servant of the Oracles, I am granted whatever power the situation necessitates."

He raises his right hand high above him, and another blueish-silver column of light surrounds him. As if in a trance, he tosses his remaining dagger high above him. It rises higher and higher, perhaps kept aloft by the strange magic in the moonlight. Clasping his hands together as if to pray, they are quickly surrounded by a blindingly bright blue aura of energy.

This sudden burst of light reveals the surrounding area to be something other than what it seemed to be... or, conceivably, it actually changed or even obscured the environment. Each tree is gone, replaced by a silvery-white translucent crystal, vaguely treelike in its shape. A similar tree-crystal exists where the burned tree used to stand, as well. Starting from Kuroi's feet and expanding outwards, the grassy ground changes into hexagonal shiny white tiles, and grass, bushes, gravestones, and the like completely vanish.

As Kuroi speaks, his voice carries an otherworldly echo...

Jack stared for just a moment at his new surroundings.

"...alright."

Wanting to spare no time, he flipped forward at Kuroi. As he did this, the six swords spun rapidly around him from about three feet. If Kuroi wasn't quick to move, he'd be caught in the flurry of slashes.

After a few seconds of revolving around Jack, one of the blades disappeared, leaving only five to float around him. Jack charged another death ball.

Kuroi immediately pulls his hands apart, revealing a fairly large sword with a shimmering blue blade and a lusterless emerald hilt. It flies into his right hand as though by magic, and he parries the first swiping attack from the spinning blades. This gives him enough time to slip in between them, into the circle. He goes for a strong, full thrust as he steps forward, trying to impale Jack at point-blank range. However, this isn't as well thought out as he had hoped, as the blades circle faster than he anticipated. He takes three bad slices to the back, but doesn't seem to flinch from them.

Jack faced Kuroi looking slightly smug (only slightly, as he showed a very limited range of facial expressions), and had not expected him to actually make it through the spinning swords. He was then surprised when Kuroi slipped through, and he attempted to step backward, but Kuroi's sword impaled Jack right in the abdomen. He gripped the blade's edge with one arm and made a soft, cough-like laugh.

"Ahhhhhhck, pain... I remember that sensation… Nice job."

Jack's left hand immediately snapped up to point at Kuroi, and he shot a death ball at him, also from point blank range. As soon as he fired it, he slipped backward and out of Kuroi's sword. At the same time, the five swords that were surrounding Jack and Kuroi pointed inward and simultaneously stabbed at Kuroi from different directions. After this, another of the swords disappeared, leaving only four.

Predicting that Kuroi would survive the danger, he posed another question.

"So what exactly is this cheerful place? I hate it."

Kuroi leaps forward, trying to stay as close as possible to his opponent. Somehow the death ball shrinks to nothingness in transit, so that isn't a problem... But his back is badly raked by the swords behind him. As he travels the short distance between him and his opponent, he brings his own blade around on his left, then twists his entire body to put all his force behind a single massive horizontal slash...

Throughout, he speaks with his mind in a disturbingly calm voice, projecting sound in each direction equally. The speech is very fast, but it seems easily comprehensible regardless.

"Hmm, yes. You would hate it. You see, in the Quartz Grove, death cannot exist. It is a special place, formed out of the hopes and dreams of every living thing. The spiritual power of people like me is increased dramatically, while people like you are repulsed by its beauty.

This also means that I cannot be killed here... Even reducing me to ashes would do nothing to halt my assault."

"So you hide in your precious land of crystal and hope, where there is no death. Death isn't so bad, you know. There is the prospect of Paradise... for those who earn it," He added darkly

Jack dropped to the floor on his back, and Kuroi's blade went over him. As soon as he hit the ground, he made a swipe at Kuroi's leg with his dagger, which flashed blue for a moment.

"So your body is undefeatable here. But surely you have a soul?"

If Kuroi was hit with Jack's dagger, he would not only take physical damage, but his soul would also be harmed (supposing he had one, and it was present in his body.) This was a very fast motion, and Jack rolled backward and onto his feet again. The four swords covered him, each making a slash at Kuroi one at a time, blocking Jack from reach. After this, another of the swords disappeared, and the rest return to his side protectively.

(ooc: Sorry for the long wait...)

The dagger leaves a cut on Kuroi's leg, but the blue aura bounces off with no effect. Kuroi seems to be tiring, though, and he is unable to press his close-range advantage. As the swords return to Jack, Kuroi jumps backwards and away from his opponent, turning a flip in the air and avoiding the slashes from the swords.

"No, I'm afraid you have it backwards. My soul is undefeatable. My body, merely better-protected."

Kuroi points his sword at Jack, and from its tip a beam of silvery metallic light is projected. It's quite similar to a laser, and Kuroi seems to be able to keep it up indefinitely. It will cause only a small amount of damage, and is probably simple to dodge. Something's definitely weird here...

Jack stood with his arms at rest beside him, glancing upward at the floating dagger. He didn't even motion his floating sword into action when swung itself at the beam and deflected it. He held his hand out at the dagger, and seemingly all on its own it flew to a level just inches from his fingers. He looked sideways at Kuroi with a raised eyebrow.

Jack: "Think I can break it?"

Jack charged a death ball and fired it at the dagger at point-blank range, thinking he might be able to escape the Quartz Grove. Meanwhile, one sword stabbed at Kuroi and another came at him from the side, spinning horizontally like a top. After this attack, the latter disappeared, leaving just two left.
