Okay, come on. Disch made this whole deal a little while back about people overpraising hacks and it's happening AGAIN. No offense intended toward Andrew, but these hacks look incredibly unprofessional. The new graphics are unappealing and some of the new palettes (the third screenshot (of SMB3) in his second most recent post, specifically) are atrocious. On the SMW world map, there are clouds being overlapped improperly by hills all over the place and even a hill in the middle of a road for some reason. The new SMB3 title screen looks pretty bad; the lettering on the new graphics needs a ton of work. The new blocks in SMB1 are incredibly out of place, and there are some oddities such as in the first screenshot in the thread where the thing mario is standing on suddenly ends and there's a whole bunch of ground; that doesn't look good.

My problem here doesn't lie with the hacks. My problem lies with all of you who are praising the hacks. While this is a step up from praising crap like transparent Mario (oooooooooohhh, how original!!), these hacks are still not deserving of the comments that people have been giving them.

mynameisbob - "One nice thing about the screenies: the GFX gets a more harder look."
Say what? The few graphic changes don't fit with the games at all; they look out of place and are a step down from the old graphics. Yes, that really is a 'nice' thing.

sonotnormal - "Wow. All your hacks look really great."
The one screenshot you had a problem with, the bullet bill one from SMW, is one of the better looking ones, in my opinion. While most of his SMB2 shots look pretty fine, quite a few are pretty bad. Look at his SMB3 overworld. The overuse of bridges combined with the checkerboarding of the rocks and cacti and the new level markers (which don't look good, probably because of their palette) makes for one bad looking map. And as for the SMW overworld, how is your only suggesstion to fix the issue on the top left? I can't for the life of me figure out how this all looks really great.

insectduel - "Very nice."
Good stock-reply there. No reasoning, no suggesstions, no nothing, just a compliment that probably stems from wanting to jump on the complimenting bandwagon. Sounds familiar, eh? Compliment only what needs complimenting, be specific with what you're complimenting, and make some damn posts with SUBSTANCE for a change. Ugh.

FreeDOS - "What's really interesting is that your series of hacks flow through each other in SMB, SMB2, SMB3, and SMW... "
Oh my god, it does flow! That's so interesting! Seriously, give me a break. What kind of comment is that? I'm sure you can do better. The fact that the entirety of your post was about this 'interesting' thing makes this even worse.

HyperHacker: You sure those few new graphics in the screenshots he posted at the beginning of the thread look nice?

Thanks to those who didn't just leave a compliment: to the rest of you, come on. As most of us who didn't already know SHOULD have learned last time, this cheapens the compliments that other people get when they put many many months (years, in some cases) into amazing hacks, and although it wasn't as bad this time, it is still troubling to see this happening. Knock it off.

I don't mean to disuade you from hacking, Andrew, and I apologize for being so harsh. Keep on hacking and improving.

I made the the graphics for IMB 1-3. Use a program like tile layer pro to edit them to the way you think looks good

I thought the first few looked good, but I agree about the rest. Poor graphics (particularly the fonts, and that out-of-place black stuff in the SMB2 hack) and palettes. I suck at GFX too, so I know how it is, but you have to be able to tell when your work is just no good.

The levels aren't too bad, though. I do agree about the SMW one looking plain. You need to take pictures of more exciting places.

I'm sorry if my hacks suck like crap I just wanted to make a hack that was the right difficulty level for me. (origionally I wasn't going to release them on acmlms)

I fixed the bottem pieces. Plus in IMB3 I changed some of the already changed graphics. Some were preety crappy.

Heres a more exicting picture.

Jeez, that last screenie looks like it's the prime jewel of the Impossible Mario World. I guess I can wait for it to be realeased. Still, the hacks looks fun.

This is one of the easier parts of this level. Launchers that have objects underneith them, don't shoot torpedo teds. It's still a very hard level. It's hard to get to this level in the first place concidering that after you beat it a path to star road opens.

Hey, that's a pretty cool challenge. I still don't like the non-smoothness of the environment (which I still cannot explain clearly) but I still like that challenge none-the-less.

Here's a challenge I made in one of my games, I'm not sure if you've done it or not: invisible bullet bill shooters. You'll be walking and suddenly bullet bills will shoot out of nowhere. It's a very cunning trap. This was probably overdone already, however.

I never thought of that idea and I don't plan on stealing it from you. unsmoothness?
The best part of this level is the maze theme.

I'm probably not the only one who has thought of that. Go ahead, try it. It's pretty cool.

You see, my first Mario hack that I did involved very challenging levels, much like yours. Later I felt that it turned out to be very boring because the only thing about it was difficulty... it wasn't very fun, and there's too many challenge remakes. So, I decided for my second hack that I would make a challenging game with less filled levels that would be similar to the ones that Nintendo made. By that, I mean it would be "smooth". I can't really explain it very well... I don't mean that they'd be just like what Nintendo made, I mean they'll actually be professional levels that people would have fun playing, and everything looked in place. There weren't random blocks that you jump on and a million things that look the same and whoa watch out a lot of enemies and obstacles, it was all set out to look like a very good level.

I went from making like 7 levels a day in my first hack to about 2 or 3 levels a day in my second hack and now 1 level every couple of days in my hack I'm doing now, which I'm trying to make pretty professional and very fun to play.

Do you understand what I mean?

Ya I understand. I try to make my levels as fun as possible. When I release the demo (hopefully some time before christmas) people won't think it's boring.

Is small house a level like all the others? i mean, are you forced to clear this level to go to the second one, or you can just walk right to the second level without playing it?

PS: I used to be aioria1981 in the old board, but i didn't post anything in the newbie forum because of the sticky

You don't have to clear Small house first. The path is already there. Small is just like yoshi's house. But before you go to the first level it's a good Idea to visit there.

The area isn't incomplete I just havn't beat some levels in that picture. I was running low on pipes/ stars so I had to improvise by making you enter the hole and it takes you to the over world map. So instead of using a pipe I used an exit tile. The hole is now hidden until you clear the castle.

EDIT: here is a better picture
