So, I've started making these hacks. Little tiny ASM hacks for SMW I call artifacts for no real reason. They are designed to be issued in great frequency and included in existing hacks. Try them out if you can; even if you don't end up using any in your hacks they're fun to play around with and I could use the help in finding bugs.

Super Mario World Artifacts

Artifacts are marked with * ratings to designate how well they work under how many conditions. Artifacts which have not been reported to have any bugs for a long time will have their status upgraded. All artifacts are currently able to be used at once.

  • An artifact marked with an X has shown serious bugs and is never suitable for inclusion in a hack.
  • An artifact marked with a * is moderately stable but does not have a very useful effect and is not recommended for serious hacks.
  • An artifact marked with ** appears to be very stable but has not been thoroughly tested. Has a useful effect.
  • An artifact marked with *** has been tested very much, is bug free, and has a very useful effect.

Quick list

More artifacts further in the thread.

Gold Rush *

Formerly Copper Charge - January 31st, 2006

Updated to Gold Rush - February 1st, 2006

Screenshot

Mario grabs a dragon coin and becomes invincible for a brief period.

Description

This hack allows Mario and Luigi to transfer their coins directly into star energy. A coin only lasts a fraction of the time a star lasts, but the effect is accumulative.

Download

goldrush.zip

Notes

  • The regular star music has been disabled.
  • Regular coins do not increase with this hack.
  • An overflow glitch noticed by asdf has been fixed, Copper Charge replaced with the updated Gold Rush

Trust Fund **

February 1st, 2006

Screenshot

Mario's star bonus is negated because he has not collected all 5 dragon coins.

Description

A fine import straight from Blue Moon, this hack prevents Mario from gaining bonus stars at the end of a level unless he has all 5 dragon coins.

Download

trustfund.zip

Notes

  • Thanks goes out to Kyouji Craw for helping to design this hack.

Power Surge *

February 2nd, 2006

Screenshot

Mario starts out invincible because of bonus stars he has accumulated in his earlier level.

Description

Goal stars from the previous level make Mario invincible when he starts the next one. The more he has obtained, the longer the invincibility lasts.

Download

powersurge.zip

Notes

  • The regular star music has been disabled.
  • Since goal stars reset every time a level starts, the bonus stage is inaccessible with this hack.

System Crash X

February 3nd, 2006

Screenshot

Glyph couldn't come up with a real patch today.

Description

I wanted to make a patch a day, but I couldn't finish Trail of Woe due to glitches. So here's System Crash; it doesn't actually crash your system but you might notice a change in the graphics.

Download

systemcrash.zip

Notes

  • This patch is for entertainment purposes only.

If you find any bugs or have any problems with these hacks, contact me and I will fix them. If you cannot get ahold of me on a message board, try my AIM screen name Glyph Phoenix. If that does not work, email me at glyphphoenix@hotmail.com

I could really use help with hosting my hacks, screenshots, and possibly this information. I don't like Geocities and while Imageshack is cool for some stuff I'd rather have all these screenshots on the same server for easy update.

These are pretty interesting. It might be worth my time to check these out for a while. I'll see what troubles I can find in the star charge one.

EDIT: It is possible to "overcharge" the meter, for example, in the Yellow Switch Palace.

Now, you can change the coins gfx into tiny stars! Freaking genius! I'll put that into some use, that'll be pretty fun to test as well!

It isn't all that it's cracked up to be, Cruel Justice. The effect is instantanious and unless there are a lot of them around, it's unlikely that they'll make much of a difference. Granted, it's still a WIP. But if possible Roc, you should make it so that they get stored up, allowing their use by pressing a certain button.

That seems like a poor idea. It would be far too easy to stockpile them and then simply rush through anything of even remote difficulty.

And thanks for making Trust Fund for me. Ha ha, I'm sure I'm the only one who will put it to good use. Really, though, I'd much rather spam Gold Rush and Market Crash =/

Not if coins reset every level. I'll probably think about it and if I do go through with it name it "Power of Money".

Power Surge has been added and the crazy code in my first post has been rewritten a bit. Also, Copper Charge has been updated and replaced with Gold Rush. Because if you don't build a number of Super Mario World hacks all named after Advance Wars DS powers, you aren't living life correctly. And, uh, that overflow glitch. Whichever.

All this talk about Trust Fund, Power Surge and Gold Rush kinda reminds me of Advance Wars for some reason... ;

But nonetheless, it will make for some interesting hacks. I would love to see some hacks with them included someday.

The only one I see of being any use at this point is Trust Fund. I agree with what has been said about the Gold Rush should be able to be charged up, though.

Wow, you must have really not been paying attention considering glyph has made specific reference to it.

Also, I use Trust Fund in my hack. Actually, Glyph designed it specifically for me.

Those are great ideas, GP.

What about... Turning dragon coins into "kill all sprites onscreen" bomb-type-things? One of the extra blocks available for blocktool has the code for that you could use.

Of course, you'd need to make the coins rarer, as well as setting a control button for them. (X, anyone?)

Advance Wars in Super Mario World is awesome. Next, Super Mario World in Advance Wars! LET'S DO IT!

Anyway, nice little tweaks here, GP. I'll probably be using Trust Fund since that one is a nice one.

Bah! With everyone using Trust Fund, you're taking the glory away from the original. MY original.

But by your logic, with all the rivers, lakes, etc. using water, they're taking the glory away from the original. THE PANGAEA OCEAN'S original. And if you didn't want it to be used, you just should've requested that it not be released. Not that I have a use for it though, the goal tape doesn't even show up in my hack.

The board DOES have an attachment system now, you know...

Back ontopic, nice hacks. Might use 'em myself.

Eh, Glyph's the one that made it... It was just my idea, and specifically made for my hack.

Speaking of which.

Glyph, how are you coming on Trail of Woe?

No, Kailieann, you can't. All these hacks were done in hexadecimal.

Anyway, I have now added System Crash. Tomorrow's hack will be less bad. And likely the one after that, and the one after that.
