Yup, with the Olympics around the corner, any lover of winter sports (that would be me  ) should be gearing up for some great sports. I figured we could use an official Olympics Discussion Thread, so I started this one. So, question is, what are your hopes, expectations, and predictions for your country this year?
Me, I'm hoping we keep up the trend since Albertville 1992 of being among the top 3 in terms of gold medals won. I'm guessing Marit Bjørgen (women's cross country skiing), Ole Einar Bjørndalen (men's biathlon), and Roar Ljøkelsøy (ski jumping) will do well. In addition, the men's curling team will hopefully win gold (preferably after trashing Canada in the final (hello, Colin  )). Then we have a lot of participants who are more than capable of winning medals or even gold. It's a shame the speed skating and alpine skiing teams ain't what they used to be... |

Our IOC's expectations are for Canada to get 25 medals.  That might be a bit lofty but you never know. Look at this stat...
"This season, Canada has been second only to winter sports superpower Germany in medals won on the various World Cup circuits from alpine skiing to snowboarding and speed skating." That's because we're pumping a LOT of money into the programs since after Torino is Vancouver.  We want a REALLY good showing there, and might as well start preparations now.
Off the top of my head... Women's hockey is an automatic medal. Men's hockey and men's/women's curling are quite possible. Beckie Scott (cross-country) won the gold (after two Russians got nailed for doping) last time around and she's improved since then so she's got a real chance. Pierre Lueders (bobsled) is always a threat, as are Cindy Klassen (speed skating), Jennifer Heil (moguls) and Jasey-Jay Anderson (snowboarding). Plus, as mentioned, our ski team has really improved and usually gets at least one podium a week now. 25 might be a bit much but I'd be happy with 20. |

| Giving this the sticky treatment because it's time...
Opening ceremonies Friday, coverage starts Saturday. I had already looked at it online, but the paper today had the CBC schedule for the games and it is a FINE schedule indeed, with a crapload of live coverage and a ton of hockey games to boot.  TSN is also going to air some stuff, mainly all the curling draws.
...Meanwhile, you Americans are going to get - and I apologize for this, but it's true - crappy coverage. Especially if you only get NBC. |

| More live coverage, basically - 12 hours or so live and another 5 hours of tape-delay footage a day. If you have a bunch of channels in the States you can get some more live stuff but if you only have NBC, the majority of your coverage is tape-delayed and during primetime.
You'd think that NBC would be able to do something better given the money they spent on the rights. |

| True, but if you're going to spend so much then make the most out of your investment.
Opening ceremonies were fun. Original way of lighting the torch to say the least. I can't believe how some of the small nations had a horrible proportion of athletes to officials... if you have 1 or 2 athletes, don't send 8 or 9 officials along as well.
Tomorrow: The first four medals are up for grabs. They'll be given out in Nordic Combined (Individual), Biathlon (Men's 20km), Freestyle Skiing (Ladies' Moguls) and Speed Skating (Men's 5000m). Figure Skating, Luge and Ski Jumping are also on the schedule, and the first round of group games in Women's Hockey. |

| Norway's probably the nation of the day due to the four medals, although you're missing that goal as far as the official count goes. :\
Jennifer Heil did a great job in the moguls for us. Simple jumps but she nailed them which a lot of the others were failing to do with more complex routines.
And Canada beating Italy 16-0 in women's hockey... OUCH. That was piling it on.  ...But I loved it. |

| Oh it's even worse on the women's side since there's a huge skill gap between Canada and countries like Russia/Germany who aren't bad in men's hockey... so imagine the gap between them and Italy. :\
I thought we'd settle at 12 or 13 to be honest. |

| Ok, let me get one thing straight. Mass starts in cross-country skiing are bullshit! You have 20 men going together for an hour, before they reach the last kilometer, where suddenly they realize that they're in a race, and everyone goes for the sprint. No one tries to break away before the very end, making everything up to the finish very tedious.
I mean, look at this, after 18.6km, you have 26 skiers within the first 10 seconds. You'd never get that with interval starts.... Bring back interval starts, damnit! Well, the race is over now.... Frode Estil falls, breaks a ski, breaks a staff, but still manages to win silver, 0.6 seconds behind Dementiev. Man that guy is good. (edited by The SomerZ on 02-12-06 09:05 AM) |

| Freestyle Skiing - Women's Moguls.
neo: The host country's guaranteed a spot in every sport, yes. They're encouraged to have a representative... at least in men's hockey they're in Division I (right below the World Championships) while the women are in Division II or III. Curling's a laugh because this is Italy's first time curling.
SomerZ: I know. That's why most of that stuff's relegated to a secondary channel here... Beckie Scott couldn't win gold.  But she finished 6th which isn't bad. |

| Canada hammers Russia 12-0 in women's hockey to pretty much secure home ice for the final against the US, which is what should happen. (If it's Canada/US, goals scored come into play to determine who the home team is, and we're ahead in that department 28-11 I think.) We'll probably be more controlled against Sweden in our final game since we only scored so many goals to grab home ice; our players have gone on record as saying they don't like running up the score since they're getting some heat here for that.
