So, uh, I really have no opinion on unions. Except that they have helped tons in the past, and that Wal-Mart hates them.

I feel that a company shouldn't be allowed to fire because of a union (and, retaliation is already illegal if directed towards a new union), but people do this anyway a lot. ;(

Meh. I'm going to wait for people to just gang up on me but I'll only watch this thread and say that I'm a big supporter of unions.

I'm not at all politcally interested - not even politically informed, for that matter - but one issue I can take some sort of stance on is that of labor unions. It's painful to witness, first hand, a man struggling to keep his job of several decades in the face of his company's desire to eliminate higher-paid, more experienced workers. My dad drives a truck for a living, a less than glamorous job, yet he finds his weekly paycheck in jeopardy as his business cracks down on the labor union he belongs to. This is after he's been there for twenty-some odd years and is supporting two kids in college, with a third entering in two years.

So, yeah, I'm for unions.

I'm for unions all the way. I live in New York City, and I could understand the transit workers union's problems completely. Someone needs to be out there protecting the best interests of the workers. The workers only leverage over their employers is their labor. If the employers aren't treating their workers properly, the workers should have the right to withdraw their labor until a reasonable agreement is made. Otherwise, workers get stepped on.. benefits get stripped and things generally won't work out well for the organization as a whole.

To have a good organization, you need to have a happy base. Not necessarily happy, just satisfied. This doesn't only apply to bussinesses and public services like the MTA of NYC. It also applies to governments and the way society should run. But, I'm just hardcore socialist like that.

And for those of you who don't know (because you don't live in NYC), there was a transit strike here. All the busses and subways stopped running for three days because the transit workers union and the MTA needed to negotiate a reasonable contract. I was for it. Most people around here didn't like it because of the inconvenience, and the transit workers union got fined some ridiculous fee like a million dollars for every day they went on strike. I thought that was extremely unfair because for those days they would have been without a contract and without benefits.. so it was a major problem for them.

I also didn't think it was right that they got fined because by doing that they were taking advantage of the union and the transit workers even further. It seemed in a way, contradictory to parts of the constitution, and contradictory to what a democracy is supposed to be. It seems almost facist to me to have the workers only benefiting the city and not trying to make things better for themselves... very backwards to me.

So uh, that's why I'm for unions. I don't know why anyone would be against unions if they're just looking our for YOUR best interests.

I'm all for unions, an ancestor of my mine was a founding member of an electrical workers union. There has to be some kind of checks and balances against corporate greed. If it was up to the executives everyone would be working for minimum wage and their bank account would be growing ever faster.

I don't really see how you can be against unions, unless you are one of those guys who look like the monopoly man. Without unions, there is no job security. No perks, no minimum wage, and so on and so forth.

Of course, the way I understand it, unions in America hardly have any power at all...

This is too broad a topic.

It's like saying "what's your opinion on corporations?" or "what's your opinion on political parties?" Some are good, some are bad, some are shiftless and corrupt, some do a great job, etc etc.

Uh, yeah, it is. You can't just throw a statement like that out there with no backing up. Explain yourself. All corporations is a pretty heavy onus, man.

On some level, I hate all corporations. They have a tendency to, y'know, exploit anybody for a profit. I don't think everybody who works for a corporation is necessarily evil or anything, but the system (of modern capitalism) as a whole is severely flawed. That's not to say there aren't good things about the moder capitalist system, but it tends to be unnecessarily inhumane.
