I'm a newbie here, so please forgive me if this has been previously addressed in a different post, but I don't recall this topic being brought up. I have a question...

When looking through the FAQ for this forum, I took note that one of the rules is that we should not post in old threads, thus in effect "bumping" them. I have seen several topics in which I wished to leave a comment but didn't know whether I should or not due to this rule being in effect.

So my question is this. Exactly how "old" must a thread be before it is considered "too old" to leave comments in? Is it consumate with the amount of time passed since the post or how far down on the board it is? I just need a general idea. I have enough common sense to know not to comment on something way down on page 26 and all, but when we start getting into the middle of the second page or even the end of the first page I start getting that funny feeling that I should just leave it alone...

Just wondering. Great forum here, by the way.

An intelligent newbie who asks questions about things he doesn't understand, and has already read the FAQ? I'm amazed! You must be extremely rare, please don't mind when we lock you u-- ...er...

A thread is considered 'too old' when it's generally off the first/second pages, although the ROM Hacking forum(s) are exempt to this. However, almost any thread (except things on, say, the last page) can be 'bumped' as long as you have something extremely good to contribute, especially in things like news/debate threads...

I don't think you did wrong by addressing it. I don't think I've EVER seen a n00b address anything, especially in detail, in the three years I've been here.

As X said, generally, you don't want to post in threads that are outdated. The consensus that I've got here is that two weeks to about a month is the line that most people draw before the thread is considered 'dead'. However, like X said again, if you feel the need to contribute something and you don't feel the need of making a new thread about a topic that might've been made just two weeks or so ago then you can feel free to post in it so long as you have something to add that would be of content.

For example, that post of yours would be considered decent content. It asks a question and generally wants to contribute or ask a question to people, most of whom would be willing to answer rather than waste a thread. In your case, though, I don't think anyone's really done this before.

Most n00bs would rather post something like "oic" after a thread has been dead for a time. THAT is what's considered to be unacceptable material. Generally, the FAQ was written to keep lamers at bay, though I feel that it really needs an update, since it's not had one in quite some time. It's just not a lot of people feel the need to do it since it would take time.

However, it's nice that people actually come forward and ask once in a while. Helps us staff out.

To continue Hiryuu's manifesto, believe it or not we have been continually discussing this matter behind everyone's backs. Honestly, I hate to make us look bad, but there are times when even we don't know what a good bump is and what a bad bump is.

We've always gone by the "Use your best judgement" rule in the case of news, weather, and sports, but generally there's nothing really wrong with bringing something that's a few weeks old out of the gutter to ask questions about it, or even just to say something small in an attempt to spark up discussion on the topic again. Quality is key here.

Also, Xkeeper has his eyes on you. Watch out, we're all members of the Thought Police around here. You shouldn't know that, though. Don't pay attention to the previous three sentences I said. You saw nothing.

If I were a mod or admin, I'd put this in the Display Case

But that's probably why I'm not one, eh
