I am using RPG Maker 2000. So far I have a plot and I'm getting close to finishing the first area of the game. I was wondering if it would be possible if I were to relate my rough plot, and have some feedback?

Okay to start with, the game is based on real people and places, but the events are made up. Basically it goes like this:

There exists a dimention beyond time and space where the cities of the planet Earth exist within their own world. This adventure takes place on one such world named Mississauga, after the hero's hometown. Tom, a resident of Mississauga and also king of another dimention named Shady Oaks, was summoned to this world in order to offer help in crushing an evil tyrent.

Mike, who is a mentally challenged student who attends Applewood Acres one day came accross a mysterious power which enabled him to brainwash his fellow students and excert control over them. His former girlfriend, Katie, was then turned to stone and hidden away in an evil shrine. Mike's powers grew, but there stepped forward a select few students who baned together to oust this menace. The leader of the Applewood Acres Resistance wanted help from his non-mentally challenged girlfriend, but she was powerless to help.

One day, this girlfriend had a strange dream that she developed magical powers, and when she woke, she had them! She went to her boyfriend to tell him that she could in fact help, but alas when she arrived at his apartment, he was turned to stone, and so was the rest of the Resistance. In desperation she retired to the library in Port Credit, but before that she had two more dreams. The first was that a swordsman that was both from Mississauga and from a faraway land would help her, and second, she drempt that an assassin from Mike was sent to kill her. The library held all sorts of archaic magic, and it was hopes for this girl that she could find the right spellbook to restore her boyfriend back to life. Little did she know that evil was right arround the corner waiting to put an end to the Resistane once and for all!

This game, as you can see, is based arround people in real life who are mentally challenged(retarded), as well as a few others(such as myself) who stand as their friends and helpers. I think this story is unique enough to be made into a game, yet not so outlandish that there is no room for character development(although the hero may seem a tad lifeless and distant sometimes). Like I said, any feedback is appreciated. It's my first run at an RPG, and I've accomplished a lot in terms of basic layout.

Well, you see, graphics are really my bad point. I'm just using the default tileset that came with the program. I woldn't think a screenshot would really tell much.

Well my suggestion is to use RPG Maker XP. It will make the graphics look way better.

I am not going to concentrate too much on graphics. Besides, my main motive is to get a few things off my chest, and that involves making a game about it. I could XP, but I really don't want to have to re-do everything over just for features I most likely won't use anyway.

Sounds good. Don't let anyone try to convince you to use RMXP, if you don't need extra features RM2k/3 are fine, and I personally like the RTP graphics. (Put it this way, the RTP graphics are a hell of a lot better than the terrible job most people do ripping graphics from other games)

If you do want some alternate graphics, I suggest First Seed Material, they have some beautiful original graphics.

As of now I am find graphicswise.

One question I have is if it would be possible to have a event that the hero can automatically activate at will if a certain condition is met. For exmaple, I made a nice pair of jump boots that when equipped, turns on a flag that allows you to jump in certain areas. I wanted to make it so you could do so any time as long as the boots are equipped. I also want to get rid of the bug of jumping onto a solit spot, like a check to see if 2 spaces away is sold or somthing. I also need to think of more equippable items I can use to set certain events. I also have a Power Bracelet.

Edit: Nevermind, I misunderstood your jumping problem.

I don't think you can make characters jump, but there is a condition that allows you to make them move on there own.

Unpredictable. Watch your backs. Or not. Whichever. I want Metal Gear Solid 4 so badly.

Rtp graphics can look really good if used well. Also if you post screens, people will give you feedback and if the screens are bad you'll be able to improve them before you release the game. And your story sounds really interesting. Good luck with this.

Argh, some of the rips there make my eyes bleed. Seriously, use the correct palette and fill the entire tileset, extra points for putting the same tiles on both layers (Great for creating secret passages and such). This is why I tend to make my resources from scratch, even if rips are already available.

Yeah, but graphics aren't the easiet thing to rip. You gotta have a lot of experience to do it. That is why I suggested that site.

Actually now that I think about it, it's not that hard to rip sprites, is it? What I have done is I've used my digital camera to take pictures of some of the "bosses" in the game, then lower the quality to reflect the critteria needed for RMK2000, then just import them as an enemy. It isn't perfect, but hey, how many RPG's have you beat up REAL life people? Also how many RPGS are there where you get to fight Retarded Ninjas? I'll try to get some screenshots soon, but in the meantime I am planning to implement a elementary item creation system, where you take 8 items and mix them together, and option that becomes available as you start saving people. If anybody's got an idea for stuff like that, it would be cool to hear some feedback. Along with that, I am looking for puzzle elements, events that occure when an item is eqipped(Imagine an item that raises max HP while equipped).

Edit: I did create an item that rasies max HP when equipped. It's kinda bulky since I needed 4 switches and 4 varables, but otherwise it works pretty well.

Gaming World is a haven of stupidity but I check their tutorials from time to time to brush up on some complex things.

Oh, and I saw a screenshot somewhere of fighting a kitten in a paper bag, beat that!

Gaming World IS NOT a haven of stupidity. I post there. And for resources try www.gaminggroundzero.com

I'm not a fan of GGZ but they DO have good rips etc.

I was more referring to the stupid comments about the tutorials, it's been ages since I was on the forums there.
