One thing that has always confused me, even more so after reading some articles about music/film censorship - why in america are certain words seen as being offensive whereas in the uk they are used in everyday language? I mean words like hell and damn etc.

Over here in england, words like hell and damn are about as acceptable as the words chicken or table. Even fuck is generally accpted, with instances on television before 9pm, and even in some midday shows.

I mean, the word cunt is even being used more and more in everyday language here, and being accepted too. In my film lesson today, we showed a few short clips to a large amount of the rest of the school (ages 12-19), and that word was used many times. No staff members cared

But yeah. I'm just interested in the cultural differences between the two countries, seeing as I have no idea about what the use of censorship/acceptance of strong language is in the usa. Can anyone give me some info about this?

That's because America is silly. I hear they also dub programs and even news due to wanting to spread stupidity. They deny the existence of foreign languages . (Ok, so that's my prejudice stuff, but there's some truth). I'd say they're too religious for their own good.

Religious?

Not everyone in America is religious. I'm not. My whole family isn't. None of my friends are, none of their families are, not a whole lot of people at school....

They can't censor television because of a religion. They do it because they're, you know, trying to make America's youth grow up a little better.

I hear those words all the time, on television, on the radio, outside, in my own house... they aren't rare, and nobody gasps when they're said. But what's the difference if television doesn't allow shows to use a handful of words?
It doesn't matter. The world isn't going to end because America is trying to limit swearing.

And it really is no wonder. You hear on the news about kindergarteners getting suspended for cussing out their teachers and thinking it's okay. I mean wtf.

Back in the 50s, the US was going through the Red Scare, where a general fear of the Communists grew. Propogamda quickly spread, saying that Communists were godless heathens that didn't live properly. Because of all this fearmongering, suburban families were scared into being those stereotypes you know and might love. However, a proper outer appearance was essential, and any and all 'dirty' material (i.e. material with swearing, poop jokes, partial nudity) was seen as taboo. Those are all evil commie things.

Well, as time went on, our culture started to relax its grip around the balls of the media, and entertainment flourished. Eventually, we end up with what we have at the present time: An acceptance on TV of all but the 7 bad words: Shit, tits, fuck, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker, and piss (Which is all allowed after 10 on broadcasted media). However, pressure from groups trying to uphold the 'family values' gtom the 50s still wdon't even want what we have now, and pressure people that can swear at any time (sattelite, cable) to only either do it late at night or not at all. Advertisers also play the 'family values' card by threatening to pull ads if the shows being broadcasted are too dirty.

tl;dr: There's assholes here taking away the fun from 98% of the country.

I thought this was going to be a thread about how ace our swearwords are, like Bugger, and Bollocks. the F word certainly ISN'T acceptable before the watershed, remember when Shaun Ryder did it on TFI Friday, and as for the C word, that's DEFINATELY still taboo.

Europeans get the impression of US being more relgious becuse of the political influence that Christians seems to have over there compared to countries like Sweden. Here, the christians have hardly anything to do with politics and there is a christian party but it's really not that popular.

Eh, you can Swear on Swedish television provided it's not children programs (and still even then, as long they're not too obscene like sexual stuff... they appear in thoose too sometimes). Even on channels such as SVT, which is funded by the goverment.

Well, it explains the lack of swearwords in imported TV shows. Compared to Swedish shows even. And sex is... well, if it's a comedy with somewhat grave sex references they tend to get max 11+ here. None cared about that hot coffea thing in GTA here, apart from how much coverage it got in USA. xD

Maybe it's more accepted in other countries because they swear creatively. In America expletives are said in the most idiotic ways ever. It doesn't really interest me the way it's done here. (e.g: I feel like fuck)

That's why you have to hear Newfie/Canada-hick swears.

It is a lovely cross between working class English and American.

Heh. It's automatically about the religion, huh? I don't know you, nor do I even.... know you. (I'm kinda a softy on debates like this. ^^;; But the censorship of the U.S. Films have greatly stopped being so strict on words. On brodcast television, for example, things like sex, penises, and abilities in bed are discussed in a show that is on during the regular course of the day.

And.... religion? I see more diverse religions here than ever. THAN EVER. There's probably 40 different religions in a chunk of the U.S. alone.

I agree that some cartoons and anime were dubbed or is void of all cursing, but those are the kinds of cartoon making companies that are gradually giving up on their business. (Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network, don't ASK me what's up with 4kids. )

And about the GTA thing... Blame Jack Thompson for that. The same person who said Bomberman inspired someone to hang theirself.

So in short, it's not about religion. It is not about religion. By any means. Silly goose.

The only reason I brought up religion is the whole "god bless America" bs and the fact that most religions are control freaks which matches some stuff happening in the US.

Swear words carry little shock value for me anymore. I've heard them so many times, they've lost most of their meaning (though I still don't ever use them, not even online). I still get a little uneasy around people that sprinkle them liberally throughout their sentences, though.

I don't get profanity. For every obscenity there's another word that means exactly the same thing, but its perfectly ok to say that word. What's the difference if they mean the same thing? Is it just because at one time it was decided that one word is ok and the other isn't. It's so abitrary.

It goes both ways, though. A joke isn't any funnier just because it contains obscenities. I think alot of people got so excited when they were finally allowed to use "bad words" that they began using them just because they're considered obscene. And they never really got over the novelty, so now they cram as many as they can in to every sentence whether its approriate for what they're trying to say or not.

I remember that we talked some about this before. I think that someone from this board got suspended for several days for saying "shit" or something along those lines.

Whatīs up with that? I wanna see how such sensitive americans reacts when they come to sweden or England.

I swear a lot myself and people donīt care at all. Except for my parents.

Well, Jilkon has a good point. A lot of the goverment people are religious.

You're exactly right. It's a psycholinguistics thing. We need taboo words, words that have a strong impact and emotive content and slangy/rebellious connotations.

Words are words. I don't know why the FCC gets all uptight over words. Aren't we garunteed freedom of speech or something like that? It's just silly.

You can be given a summons if you curse too loudly in my neighborhood. It rarely ever gets done... but my friend was being really really loud one night and talking about, god know what.. and he got a summons for it. It wasn't even for disturbing the peace, it was for cursing. That is the height of silly.

I generally abstain from cursing unless something completely awesomely amazing happens.. or something completely unawesomely unamazing happens.

The Hicklin standard defined material as obscene if it tended "to deprave or corrupt those whose minds are open to such immoral influences, and into whose hands a publication of this sort may fall".The people in power follow this and to them, obscenties are something that can corrupt... read more about it from Wikipedia
