A while ago, someone was making a hack based on Pac Man that sadly looked like absolute crap. I liked the idea though and started thinking about the potential of a Pac Man themed hack. I soon realized that if done right, someone could make a really fun and original hack. Of course I couldn't wait to start working on it, but there was one problem. I'm a Mac user (and a quite satisfied one) and the old PC that I used to do my hacking on was taken away by my brother when he moved out from my mom's. Since I'm not really that fond of my brother and won't be visiting him much, it'll be a while until I can resume my SMW hacking (at least until the new intel Macs come out). However, I just couldn't get those horrible graphics from the other Pac Man hack out of my head. I had to do something about it, so I started making some graphics of my own, kind of like concept art. When I was done, I really liked the result and thought I'd share it with you:

Note that this is not a hack in progress, it's merely concept art.

Any way, seeing as I won't be able to hack SMW for a long while, anyone who's getting some inspiration from this and would like to give it a try may PM me. If I think a good hack worthy the name of Pac Man could come out of it, I'll gladly share my graphics and even make some additional ones if needed.

That concept art owns. So, so much.

You would have an awesome hack if you made every level like the one in that screen shot.

If you can ever get access to a LM-compatible computer again, please do this. Fireworks will be shot from heaven and angels will sing.

Holy shit.

Is it just me, or does anyone else get an idea of levels filled with puzzles/mazes and one-way door traps based around the always sexy pacman theme? Or is it just me?

A hack like that would be awesome. Too awesome.

Wow! If the real graphics were similar to the concept art, that hack would be incredible! I love how you used the orange sky and the blue foreground that nicely together. If this was a puzzle-based hack, my life would be one step closer to being complete.

A good idea. And if I remember correctly, there is a block in block tool that you can't pass unless you get a certain amount of coins. Surly to be helpful.

Well, I made the graphics so they would be able to be inserted directly into the game without a problem. Most of the sprites and objects doesn't use more than 8 colors. As for the orange sky, I was kind of hoping that it would be possible to implement using the SMW HDMA design kit by d4s. The sky is using a total of 16 colors.

My thoughts exactly, I was thinking of loading that coin amount from a certain color so that it could be specified for every level and using that as a level exit. The ghosts would kill you if you touched them or tried jumping on them but the super pellets would activate invincibility. Also, the time you're invincible should be a bit shorter than in SMW.

This is a really great idea! What about the music? It would be really weird to play a kind like Pac man game with Mario music.I hope that someone work in this hack because it's a cool idea. The graphics looks really good.Keep it up and I will be looking foward for this one.

There are only a few people who have succesfully hacked the music of SMW, I'm not one of them. However, I'm sure all of you remember this. It probably won't be out for a while, but I'll not be able to get access to a PC for a while neither so with any luck we'll all be able to make our own music when I can start hacking again (assuming that blackhole89 is still working on Solar Soundtrack).

The screenshot looks really great. I had the idea of doing a Pac-Man-SMW-hack a few years ago, but I never get into it. Mostly, because I'm still working on "Second Reality 2", but for a few years, I thought I would done it earlier to come up at first with an idea like that, lol XD. But besides that, I really would like to see a Pac-Man-hack. Full with puzzles and of course you find all the "coins" to get to the exit (like in Pac In Time for the SNES as well, if i'm remember right)

Too bad, that's only concept art. I would really like to play a hack like that!

I see this being quite possible with some minor ROM address tweaks, first if you altered the vine/net climbing speed to about the same speed that "pac-man" can walk, then dissable the jump, and change the climbing gfx, then make the goombas into "ghosts" and use custom blocks for the "powerpills" that would enable silver pow, therfore making the ghosts "edable(sp?)" and then with those coin pass blocks, it would be very possible.

The silver pow activasion is a great idea and changing the spinning coin gfx to blue ghosts would give a great result. About the climbing stuff though, I was thinking more of a side-view pac man with jumping enabled. I would however disable running and try finding a way to make pac man continue walking once he started even when the direction button is released.

EDIT:
I threw together a scared ghost, animated it too:

In the animation above, Pac Man has four frames (three individual ones). That would require hacking mario's animation, but I guess two frames would be enough as seen below:

Well... interesting concept...

Yeah, I remember that old crappy one... gah!

Everything has to start somewhere, right?

Yeah, and the thing is: since the tileset doesn't use black for an outline, you can use many different colors in the same row!

It's great that you liked it, but you really should ask for permission before using my gfx
Besides, you got most of the corners wrong...

I know, but I was trying to see if I could draw and assemble it in Lunar Magic. Just a quick minute in it...

I tried playing around with it and it would make some very interesting level designs, that is for sure!

Now... Pac-Man animated like that would be nice. If I am thinking what you are, you want the Ghosts to hurt you all the time, which means no big Pac-Man. So... was can easily be done is to make some spiny duplicates with different palettes and they'll have the same effect. If that is what you want...

Yeah, I was going for a one-single-hit-and-you're-dead concept. Different colored spinies was what I had in mind when the idea first came up in my mind. However, when searching the internet for reference pictures, i stumbled across this site (warning: HUGE loading time) where I found some interesting info, I quote:
"Then I did a little websurfing and found that the ghosts behave differently. Actually, I've heard that Pac-man was the first game to have villians who didn't all act the same. Turns out that Pokey doesn't really even follow pac-man, he just does a predetermined route depending on where pac-man is on the screen. So Pokey's the dumb one"
Pokey is the orange ghost, the blue, pink and red ones are named Bashful, Speedy and Shadow in that order. Further down on the page, the author discribes how Shadow is the leader of the group, the hero of the ghost community. Anyway, that's when I got the idea to make the ghosts in the hack behave differently too. Pokey would just go straight ahead and walk off edges and such, Bashful would behave just as Pokey, except he wouldn't walk off edges. Speedy would behave like Bashful but faster and Shadow would follow Pac Man around a like Monty Mole would do. Of course, none of them would be jumpable, the only way to kill them would be to eat a super pellet.

Double post! Wohoo!
I made some dangerous looking spikes and an obstacle that would only be passable after eating 20 pellets. I also added some sharp corners:

I forgot the statusbar this time though
Do you think the new stuff works together with the rest of the graphics?

Damn, that is THE shit. Although from a "formal" standpoint, the solid graphics would clash with the hollow walls. Except we're not that formal, the walls look better hollow, and the objects look better solid. Don't make the walls not hollow though, as I tried it myself in an image editor. It made the other graphics fit in a little better, but it just doesn't look as cool anymore. I suppose that's because seeing the background through the hollow walls is a nice effect.

....WOW.

If this turns into a full-fledged hack, I would have to bow down to your greatness and cry tears of joy. I do like those spikes. But, I just wanna ask, what are spikes doing in a game with Pac-man in it?

Can't see a problems with that. You have probably never played one of the Pac in Time-games, they have the ghosts included as well as dozens of other enemies, they have spikes, lava, whatever and even dozens of different locations. So, in fact you can do everything in a Pac-Man-themed hack.

The spikes are there for one simple reason; so the hack would be more interesting to play. A side-view platform/puzzle game would be quite boring if the only thing you had to look out for was a few ghosts.

Rest assured that I will not be adding any lava or anything like that. I want to keep it clean.
