So, do you work? If so, what do you do? Is it a career, or just a job to pay for the necessities until you start your career?
If not, do you plan to any time soon?
LETS HEAR ABOUT JOBS.

I'm 16, so I'm new to work. I started in September, working at the local grocery store called Pavilions. My job was a courtesy clerk, bagging groceries and assisting customers with anything they needed. I also had to collect carts. Boring, dull, and for minimum wage (not to mention Pavilions is part of a union, so I lost an average of $10 a paycheck). I quit that job a few weeks ago because of the union. They were demanding that I pay upwards of $500...no.

Now I work at an ice cream place called Maggie Moo's Ice Cream and Treatery.

It's fun, to say the least. I get paid above minimum wage, no union fees, and the work is much easier. Plus, I get a 50% discount for working there. Can you say SCORE?

Certainly not a career, but not a bad job for someone my age.

What about you?
Cynthia

Uh-huh.

Why didn't I know that you finally switched jobs from what was once my dream job (when I was 6 years old or so... XD) to that?

Ice Cream AND Treatery... *checks web site* ...ooh, it's a chain. With some VERY nice flavors.

...*gets back on track*

No job, really need one this summer, no idea what the hell I'm going to end up doing. Probably won't be a career, I can tell you that much... unless I move up the ranks quickly.

Well technically, I only started working there yesterday. But I quit Pavilions a week ago today, thank goodness.
It may have looked fun when you were 6, but let me tell you. It's not.

Isn't the mascot of my new job horrifying?

I have two jobs. My primary job is Student Library Employee at one of the satellite libraries at my university. The job is pretty cush--all I do most of the time is check out books, shelve books, straighten books, or just watch the circulation desk. Since I work evenings and weekends AND it is a small library, I'm pretty much paid to study I also do extra tasks that most SLEs don't have so I get paid an extra two dollars for a grand total of $10.57/hour before taxes.

My other job is being a Graduate Student Instructor (i.e. Teaching Assistant) for a lower division computer science course. My job is to run a lab section and a discussion section (a time students can get clarification on topics lectured by the professor). Pay is quite good--approximately $650/month (after taxes) for an estimated 40 hours of work. So, if I did the math correctly, that should be about $16/hour.

Yes.

I can't say what I do though. Non-disclosure agreement.

;D

Filing, data entry, frank discussion of technology. It's a pretty nice gig. $10 an hour, 20+ hours a week, sure to look good on my résumé.

No job for me. My family has always been pretty financialy stable (my dad has a really well paying job), and I never really...buy all that much. Most of my money is saved up from birthdays and other stuff, left over lunch change, that kind of thing. That and the fact that I don't really NEED to buy anything (though for gas money this may change), I never ended up getting one. Its not that I'm lazy, its that its really not necessary right now, and it dosn't fit into my schedual with school and everything else going on. So, yeah.

Me = Unemployed

I am looking for a job at the moment. I just need to get some papers in order and such before I do anything.

I need the money to pay off bills and money I plan on borrowing from some friends to buy a sound system.

Meh, it's winter and I'm 15, a job at this point is not a necessity. I think I can perform most functions required to do low level work I'll be involved in sometime in the warmer months, that should be fun. Maybe not a food-related job though, I'm spectacularly unhygenic in summer.

Yes, I'm a machinist. I had my first job at 16, working at KFC. Not only was it the worst job ever, I'm pretty sure it was the worst thing ever. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone with a central nervous system.

When I was 19, (long, long after quitting the chicken joint) I got a job at a small machine shop with about 20 machines and 10 employees. I did simple repetitive work for quite awhile, before being trained to run Brown and Sharpe screw machines. Eventually I was taught to sharpen and set the tools on the those machines and eventually set-up new jobs and repair them.

Training was very difficult, especially when you're being trained by a 65 year old German guy with very little patience (he's a good guy, just some people aren't meant to teach). He retired at the end of last year so now I run the Brown and Sharpe department by myself.

If you're interested a screw machine is it's another name for an automatic metal lathe. If you've taken wood shop you should know what a lathe is, you use them to make table legs. Basically you put a board in it and it spins it, then you slowly move a cutter along the outside to create concentric contours. An automatic metal lathe is basically the same concept, except it cuts a long bar of metal (normally about 12 feat long). The machine will feed some of the spinning bar out and cutters controlled by cams will move in a machine metal off the outside of the bar. At the same time it switches between tools in the front such as drills, taps (for internal threading), and die heads (for external threading) which move in and machine from the front. As a last step a tool comes in and cuts the machined part off from the rest of the bar, and it feeds in more of the bar for the next part. The finished part can be anything from a small bolt, valve or bushing, to a foot long shaft, depending on what the customer orders. All the dimensions on the part have to be very accurate, normally within 3-5 thousandths of an inch depending on the specs, or the customer will send them back. When we complete an order, we change the cams and tooling and retime the feeding and tool changes for different part.

Its good work, since I run the department by myself its very independent (no boss hanging over your shoulder). And there's more thinking involved than anything else. Sometimes I'll have to come up with a new way of getting a tool centered, or designing a better way of catching parts when they cut off. Stuff like that. It can also be very stressful though, when I can't get a tool centered properly or I can't get a dimension in right. Or if I screw up and make a bunch of bad parts or crash a machine. A few months ago we got a new Tsugami CNC swiss style lathe, me and the guy who owns the company spent a week in Conneticut learning to program and run it before it came, but we're still learning now as we run it. Its been over booked since the day we got it. Since me and the boss are the only ones who can run it, I put in alot of hours, normally about 55 hours a week. But the pay's good especially with all the over time.

Its a career for now, but I won't do it forever. I invest alot of what I make so I maybe one day I'll start my own business (not machining related). Or go into early semi-retirement, working somewhere less stressful, and less hours, and live partially off my investments.

Wow this is alot longer than I thought it would be. Oh well, if you made it this far, good for you, you're alot more patient than me.

I have a career in game design. My first job was a customer service rep for a bunch of different businesses (outsourced for their customer service). Second job was technical support for Cingular Wireless (SUCKED). Third and current job is game designer for an undisclosed company (well, I just don't want to directly say).

EDIT: I guess I was supposed to mention my age as well. I'm 23.

I do indeed have a permeant job, I've only been working their for a few weeks, this week will be my 8th week working their. This is my first decent/proper job and I'm really liking it.

It's a junior receptions position, which means I get my very own desk and stationary and everything The people their are so very nice and friendly and they are all so helpful. I defiantly think that this job will be my career path as when I applied for the position I was told that their was room for advancement.

It's just a pity it's so far to travel to each morning and going home. I have to catch the train which takes an hour to get to work and an hour to get home. But I'm not really complaining because I don't mind the travel.

McDonalds' Grill technician.

Should be paid at least a dollar more per hour than my minimum wage because over the summer I was a closer (5PM until at least 1AM) but the head manager, a fat prick, conviently forgot that part.

I get 50% discount, but I don't use it now that I know how sick the food is there.

I'd quit, but I don't want to relearn a new job, because I've got a handle on mine finally. You'd think after working since may of last year, I'd be an expert, but there's so much to it.

Besides, I´ll take a break when I´m done with school.

I work at EB. It's a pretty sweet gig. But I'm about to get my hours cut like a mofo, because we're finally getting a manager. (Before the asst. manager and 3rd key were running the store, with me and one other dude rounding out the crew)

Sorry about that post guys ..

I used to have a job at a deli.. and the hours were nutty. Also, I got paid BELOW minimum wage and it just wasn't worth the trouble. I haven't had a job since then because working conditions aroung here for 16 year olds are pretty terrible.. it's not like it's going to be much better when I'm 17 in two months.

I'm so worried about paying for college
