Yup, I got my permit from DPS today after school after passing a very easy test which you need to pass to get your permit. Most of the questions were common sense and two of them at the very beginning of the test ask you what is your last name and your birthday which you really shouldn't miss. I got to go back on the 19th of July before returning to DPS and getting my license. Taht's a long time from now but that's something to look forward to for the summer.

Now that I can drive legally, my parents will find some remote spot in town so I can practice driving. I'm kind of nervous about driving, mainly that I might screw up somehow but I'll wait and see what will happen.

I know most of you can drive now and I want to ask you this question: Did you get nervous when you first started driving a car?

Heeeeyyy, congrats!
I got my license last May, after having my permit for 6 months as well. I got both the permit and the driving test passed on my first tries, yay me.
Have you done any behind the wheel lessons for your driver's education class? Or is that just a CA thing?
My first time driving (aside from my mom letting me drive in an empty parking lot once for a minute or two) was a lesson with a driving instructor, which is required here. 3 of them, 2 hours each. My first one... I was terrified. I had never been on the road before, never really used the pedals because in parking lots, it's pretty slow... but it only takes one time to get the hang of it, and then you'll get comfortable and be able to practice on the smaller things. The sort of things they look out for when you do the behind the wheel test in July.
Have fun!

Actually, our drivers ed. teacher is going to do the behind the wheel lessons sometime in February. After completing that, I should get a certificate and then wait till July to give it to DPS. At least, that's what they said.

My parents told me right now that they plan to take my to the high school parking lot on a weekend, they haven't mention if it's this weekend or the next one. It'll be a good place to practice because no one is going to be around and I'll less likely to crash the car when there is a lot of space to practice.

... April 5th for me...

We have a 16 and 3 months rule here

Either way, I was deathly TERRIFIED when I first hopped into a car. I didnt drive for two weeks, didnt WANT to drive, and then was forced to do so anyways...

And now... Im pretty okay at it. My ability to park is going to screw me over on the Behind the Wheel part of the exam, but thats okay, I still have 3 months to learn how to do so.

Either way, congrats on being one step closer to total freedom

Parking is what I was best at in the beginning.
I couldn't stay in the middle of my lane while driving, and I forgot about all the places one has to look, and I was horrible with controlling the accelerator... but damn, I could park.

Now at least parking isn't the only thing I can do well while driving.

I waited until I moved back to Puerto Rico to get my license.

There is only a month delay between getting your permit and your driver's license.

No year waiting for me.

It's 6 months here if you're under 18, but if you're over 18 you can take the driving test the same day as the permit test, if you pass it.

assuming the DMV allows you to have two appointments in their system, which is impossible. My mom had made a driving test appointment at one DMV place on Friday. She also made another one for me on a Saturday the day after she made the appointment for Friday. I show up Friday and they told me my appointment wasn't until the next day... So, unless you were willing to wait in line for a test, then it is pretty much impossible--maybe more probable if you went to the DMV of a small town ...

well yeah, you'd have to wait a little, but there's always some time of the day that the DMV isn't swamped. Like a Tuesday morning, perhaps.
There's really no real need to get your license the same day as your permit though.. so no big deal.

Can't be nervous driving a car if I've never done so to begin with.

However, when driving with other guys/girls my age or younger... let's just say I'm slightly less confident than usual. Not freaking out or nervous or anything, but a little wary.

Lucky for people over 18.

Over here, one month, doesn't matter your age just as long as you are 16 years old and up.

And Iīm not ALLOWED to drive a car. Itīs really annoying. My bad sight's fault.

Good that you got a driving license, fabio. Now, try to not ruin too many cars while practicing, okay?

How bad is your eye sight? In the state of california, anything past 13 means you are legally blind. My eyesight is around -3.5/-3.25 and I still have a license

You can have horrible eyesight here, but if you have corrective lenses for it, then you're fine. As long as you can pass the sight test before getting into the car.. with or without glasses. If you need them, wear them when you drive. It's not hard.

I tend to be nervous when I drive, since I have little experience. I find it quite difficult to find just the right amount of pressure to push on the gas, and keep my foot there, so if I'm supposed to be doing 50 I'll keep going back and forth between 40 and 60. And the constant need to look around everywhere takes some getting used to. It's a lot harder than it looks.

Didn't help much when my dad tried to teach me with his truck either. The steering wheel's stiff, the tires are too big (so if you turn too sharp they grind against the frame ), the gas pedal is really stiff (I have to like stand on it ) and it's not exactly what I'd call reliable. He's not much of a teacher either, always telling me how I would do things if I were driving an 18-wheeler, and I just want to say "STFU, this is a fucking pickup", but that wouldn't be such a good idea.

I can do some wicked donuts though.

My '97 Chevy Cavalier and me.

In Washington, you have to have your permit for 6 months before your license, and take Driver's Ed, and take the written.. Along with a final drive, of course. (If you are a minor.)

If not, you just have to take the written and the final drive.

Anyways, I've had my license for almost 3 months now.. 3 more months and I can legally drive others around in my car. AKA friends. Family members don't count.

I'm only nervous when I'm driving between those God Damned SUVs. Seriously, they go over the lane marker all the time when I'm right next to them.
