Some more screenies of my YI hack:

1-4: Burt's Forsaken Fort

Cookies to anyone who can guess where I "borrowed" the name of the level from.

Anyway...

This level has a twist. You get to choose whether you want to take the easy path or the hard path. Both end up leading you to the key to the boss room. The right path is the easy one and the left one is the harder one.

This is the easy path. All the spinning spike balls or whatever you call them will only come with one.

No matter what path you take, you will have to fight Gargantua Blargg.

Near the end of the easy path, you have to avoid Gargantua Blargg while moving the platforms you are on manually.

Now for the hard path screenshots, here is where I start using the dual spinning spike balls. They appear throughout the hard path.

Gargantua Blargg is waiting for you and that's not the worst part. The room the hard path is in is a slow auto-scroll level. Also, pay attention to the weird thing in the lava (besides Gargantua Blargg).

More chaos. A couple of Bandits appear along the way.

Bonus level of 1-4. You win a prize if you destroy all the enemies in this room. There is only one enemy though.

Edited boss fight. The floor is now flat and the egg cactus plant is now hovering over the arena from a horizontal platform. You can avoid Burt by hiding through either side of the level.

Fun fact: This is the first room I had to use level expansion. Originally, you could only have 3 sprites in the level so I had to expand it to make room for one more.

Thought I'd show some screens since I'm almost through with my hack.

Combat Devolved

The guy MC is shooting is probably going to be a Jackal. We'll just have to wait and see.

This is the Pillar of Autumn if you guys couldn't get that. Yes the text will be edited. My old rom got corrupted by nesticle somehow (Don't ask... ) so the text iis going to have to be done again.

Sorry if the pictures look weird. Image shack was refusing to upload so i googled up a free image hoster.

Fabio: Those screens looks pretty cool, I loved YI when I bought it back in the 90's. This is gonna be one of my must plays when it's done, since YI64 sucked big balls. Nice progress man.

Gideon Zhi: I like the Comic Sans font the most, since it looks like a comical game.

Tanks: I didn't liked predator when I bought it back in the 80's, but now that it has that Halo feel, I'm gonna enjoy it. Master Chief kicks ass.

I know this pic ain't much, but now after playing Ice Man's hacks I'm getting my gears working again...

I just gotta figure out what Fred'll say to Mario when Mario gets an item.

omg Fred! I LOVED the old Flintstones game--are you doing anything major or he just like a cameo?

I liked the first font the most, Gideon.

Zhi: I think the last font is the most fitting for the style of the rest of the graphics.

edit:

Alas, they are but mere mockups.

edit2: Added another small 128x128 mockup. castle/temple-ish.

I have codenamed this "The hack that will never be."

Screens are looking good fabio. Is Burt's Forsaken Fort from Wind Waker's "Forsaken Fortress" by chance?

Couple things I'd like to point out:

1. The Blargg looks as if it is one space too high. It's hard for me to tell, but I know it seems higher then the one I used in my hack. You can tell if it's correct when it goes into the lava - all you should be able to see are the eyebrows.
2. Might I suggest using object 43 - striped object in castles - a bit more? Mainly reaching from the ceiling to the floor? It would add a little extra flare to your levels

This hack is coming along very nicely. Keep it up!

Yes, that's where I got the name from. :P

1. Yeah, you were right about Gargantua Blargg being one space too high. I just checked in the original game just now. I assumed that Gargantua Blargg would work the same way as Nep-Enut did so I put the sprite on the second row from the top of the lava.
2. I'll add more of object 43 soon. I still have plenty of object data remaining. As for sprite data, I used all 240 bytes for it.

Also, Golden Yoshi suggested to mess around with the edit header and change the FG/BG of some of my levels, mainly 1-4. I just did that and I can't decide which FG looks the best. Here are the three that I choosed.

Palette 14 (1-4's original palette):

I think the first and second are better than the third. The brighter blue just doesn't seem to fit in with dark background or the castle atmosphere in general. It also looks funny sitting next to the lava.

Gideon, I like the first font the best also but the third one (Comic Sans) would do nicely if you tweaked it a bit -- especially the lowercase d, which feels one pixel too wide, and lowercase e. Basically that font doesn't have the handcrafted look that the other two have.

Definitely the first one. Nothing wrong with the other two, but the first one matches the background of the lava, and just looks nice. I used that palette in 3-8 of my hack, but it was pretty badly implemented. You, on the other hand, made it look good, so great job

If you keep the first one, I think you should change the white part with another color... That looks wrong.

Do you mean the white window in the BG, or the white part of the castle wall? If you mean the first, that is actually part of the layer 2 image and can't be changed. If you mean the FG part of the diagonal wall with the little brown specks in it .. well, the only option then would be for him to use the other palettes

I have to agree with Stifu there, the white part on the wall to the right of the picture looks wrong. I'm going to use Palette 24 for the castle. Thanks for the feedback guys.

You poor thing.

Those are very competent graphics. You present it as the hack that will never be.

I must ask... why not?

Can you hack?
