Hapi-San: Your hack is incredible! Never give up! This is one of the biggest jumps in ROM hacking (Besides that new SMW SFX Chip thing) for a long time!

Good lord I want to play it now! *drool...*

Here are some updates on Castlevania Chorus of Mysteries:

I've been messing around with the enemy data for our Castlevania hack. I've been testing out many hypothetical ideas for enemies. The most significant thing I was able to do so far was create this boss in the above screenshot using the engine for the original medusa boss. Here are some of the things I made it do:

- It moves very fast
- It moves across left and right and stays in that same row on the screen, moving up and down only slightly
- Unlike the medusa boss, it stays one color. And it's red.
- I sped up the animation of the sprite to make it look like it pulsates
- It shoots those little green things (originally the snakes), which chase you around in the air
- I gave it new graphics (though they might be a little out of place for this game)

In edition to messing with the enemies, I also have been creating a good deal of new sound effects. I have been able to mimic sound effects from Castlevania 2 identically. I also created several of my own. I also made them happen for certain situations (for example, giving the meat chop it's own sound effect). Nothing more advanced than that though.

optomon, that Castlevania hack is looking tremendous. This will truly be a 100% hack. Graphics, enemy behavior, level layout, music and sound effects? Very nice.

I have had some free time lately and made a little SMB 1 hack. Its based on a hacked SMB that Googie sent me a while back for a collaboration project we had that got scrapped. It has new object GFX and some new enemy GFX. It also has some nifty conveyor belts and a new "land theme" song.

I only have 1 level, palette corrections here and there and a title screen edit(Thanks for the program Googie!) left to do.

I'm glad this is still being worked on, now I'm inspired to work on my Castlevania hack. Nice job, I can't wait till it's finished.

optomon: ... that looks and sounds awesome. Why does it remind me of Dark Matter from the Kirby series though

AlexAR: Wow, that hack looks really great! Whether it be game-making or ROM hacking, it looks like you do great at both. The only thing I see wrong is in the second screenie - the top says "2-" and then a weird symbol. If it is supposed to be a castle symbol, thats fine, but to me, it just looks sort of odd.

Conveyor belts look awesome though

And for those who are still interested, I have a new screenie of YIKR up now - 5-7 - Morpher's Malady. A tough level full of all the morphs, it truly plays like a harder and longer Secret 3 from the GBA version of YI.

Note the dusk BG, which will lead into 5-8

(also, the car is not glitched, it just rolled off of the yellow platform at about the same time I snapped the screenie)

AlexAR: That hack is something I'm really looking forward to playing. It looks a lot better than most of the run of the mill Mario hacks. Hope you find some help with the title screen sooner rather than later because I can't wait to play that hack.

Secret 3 of the GBA YI was my favorite level out of all the new ones they made for that game.

I can't wait to see how hard it is.

I lost my data on my SMAS hack, so I'm making some new levels. Enjoy the screenies of level 1:

One other thing I'll mention is that I've gotten the time to start at 250. Yes, this means I've learned how to make custom time limits at any legnth (except infinite, I'll figure it out eventually).

GOO! I love you optomon... seriously... have my babies. This hack has gone from like pretty GFX to like, god like ever since I asked you to join up on it. You should hack away anything you want, make some funky changes and then send it over to me so I can make some pretty sprites, and then maybe actually change the levels.
**EDIT**
I was inspired to work on new GFX for the boss that optomon made right away. Here's what I came up with:

But damn, you're going to town on SMAS: SMB. Way to be. You have to keep me posted on your developments so I can possibly implement them in my would-be editor.

Yeah, I'm working on an editor for the Super Mario Bros. part of Super Mario All-stars. It's in such an early stage it's not even funny, however.

That's a half-baked code-window'd screenshot of all I have so far. It loads graphics and time for a level from ROM and I coded my own little UI for it. SWR was so kind as to lend me the level data he gathered, making my job infinitely easier--that means it shouldn't be too long before I whip up a basic level parser.

@ Dr. Mario: I do know how to change levels a little better than before, but it may take a little while to explain. I didn't want to mess too much with the graphics, and I figured you'd come to help me out there. I should update you on the sprite data I found sometime soon.

@ Googie or anyone else: I'll try and make a text document available on some of the game's data sometime later as soon as I figure out how to turn my notes into comprehensible material. Or if you want data now, just ask.

Hapi-San: Jesus christ! This makes me wish that the ROM hacking community here had a few of your heads... but then again, Sonic is pretty versitale in this route, since there's a lot of things to be had from later sequels on the same machine. Very good job, though, and I can't wait to see more!

Sonicandtails: The SMW SuperFX thing is nothing, yet. It doesn't change the game in monumental ways, it just makes Mario transparent. In other words, it could be nice, but at the moment it's fucking lame.

SWR: As I've occasionally said in IRC, just keep it up Seems to be turning out well. I wonder if SMAS SMB will turn into the new SMW for hacking..? Probably not (considering all the limitations of the SMB engine; sigh), but it's interesting to think about...

Kyoufu Kawa: Learn how to use layers. Seriously, even two or three layers (background, background 2, foreground) would make a monumental difference in the portability and ease of using your graphics... I see about 6 copies of the staircase in that screenshot, and it could easily be reduced to two or even one with layers.

You don't even need the SFX for that anyways

Hapi-San: Nice. I'm gonna download a genesis emu *just* for that hack.

DahrkDaiz: Nice. That status bar is a good bunch cleaner than the original SMB3 one.

SWR: Looks nice. Good job on your level pointer code replacement, BTW. Did you get anywhere with the level format itself?

S.N.N.: Nice. I dunno if I'm gonna play that hack, I suck at vanilla YI, so I don't know if I want to play a ahrder version of it

AlexAR: Nice. I'ma gonna HAVE to play that when you release a demo/the full hack.

DahrkDaiz: I like how you did that, it looks pretty cool man.

What the fuck are you talking about? There -are- only three layers in that screenshot, not counting the sprites and message box. Same setup as the original game, same tiles...
