| An interesting point was raised tonight; if Martin Luther King, Jr. somehow ended up alive right now, what do you think his impression would be of modern black America? I can't say I wouldn't expect him to shout, "This is what I took all those beatings for?" It just seems to me like all the rights that were fought for in the 20th century have become forgotten, save for those government-endorsed holidays where, for one day a year, we all pretend we grasp the scope of what really happened.
Did MLK and other civil rights activists really fight against black stereotypes, just for new ones to be invented by the music industry? My young, black brothers and sisters, does this really represent you? Or even to an extent, this? Even back when I was in K-12, all the black kids in my school save for a scant few tried to personify the stereotypes put out by the music and movie industry, and when I critisized this openly, I was called racist, but that ain't nobody's race, that's some old bullshit. It's MLK day, bitches; think about it. |

He has a good point. MLK day really isn't what it should be about anymore. It just kinda seems like another day kids get off of school
He was a great man in his time and changed the course of history for everyone, not just for black Americans. Personally, I can't say things are all good with the way there are now, but its better than what it was. Things just still need to be worked out I suppose..... And yeah, the music industry doesn't exactly help out with matters. :/ |

| Man, I used to think that stereotypes were impossible to fulfill, but then I realized that they exist because at least one person has fulfilled them at some point. Whether or not they're perpetuated is now the issue...
I did a report on Martin Luther King once. In fourth grade. I dressed up to try to look like he did when he did his famous speech. I don't think it went over well, because I seem to have forgotten an integral part of the costume. I still wonder, though, does my inattentiveness to the color of the character's skin make me nonracist, or does the fact that I beat myself up for this years later make me a racist at heart? I believe there are some forms of discrimination that people don't realize are discriminating. Like, raising a race, any race, above other races is a form of discrimination that, while at times positive, still serves to drive a wedge further between the compared races when the entire goal of every civil rights movement has been to bring the races closer together... The NAACP is just as racist as the KKK is, but the difference is that the NAACP isn't going around and lynching people, and the KKK isn't working towards the advancement of a particular race to equality (quite the opposite, actually). I think "racist" is the wrong word to use in cases like this. A better word would be "discriminatory", since you can recognize the difference between races and not care, thereby making you a racist who doesn't really care and bears no ill will toward anyone, but the true crime lies in discriminating against someone based on the differences that you recognize. Flame on! |

| The simple fact of the matter is that there was, and is, still a vast amount of discimination against blacks and other races in many countries. The ghettoization and isolation of the black population to economically immobile areas in the post-depression period which had fallen out of favour with the chose demographic (see Harlem which at the time was a vibrant miniburb built within New York to accomodate the professional workforce). That is one of the driving forces behind what people misrepresent as black culture today. I suppose that this is an issue taken upon by white and other people to denigrate the black community as "gangsta". I find this mode of though, such as Kutske's, obscenely regressive. What is seen as black culture is actually a market culture - a counter-culture that is developed and marketed by a large scale to the detriment of the community. However, there is a definitive URBAN CULTURE that does NOT thrive on violence that people need to understand and respect. People today think urban and think inner-city gangs. This view is of extreme detriment not only to the suitability of inner-city living (which is done in darn near every major city in the world - save cities in America where the once popular areas have GENERALLY become slums). The urban culture movement can be seen as counter-cultural, but when it is taken at its root it is a mirror culture that lacks the modified-to-sell aspects of "gangsta" culture. | |||

| I'm a black man and no it doesn't represent me at all. But it will never change. People are even racist subconciously without knowing. The bbc did some sort of racist test and they found that quite a few poeple were actually slightly racist without knowing. I'll find the link later. | |||

| It's just more proof on how money can corrupt so many things...
A lot of this stuff that is being shown as discriminatory is also icons of commercialism. Apparently, that's what sells. Unfortunately, how one is to untangle a genuine culture from the dollar bill is beyond me. |

| There's definatly a white stereotype to though. Just like there's an asian stereotype, an italian stereotype, a jewish sterioype, a german stereotype, an irish steriotype... etc..
Except, no one really pays attention to any of them. They just make for good jokes.. cause there's a little bit of an element of truth to all of them.. but in jokes it's over exaggerated. You can pick out the people who are truly racist from people who are just joking.. I hope. Cause without a sense of humor, you will go insane. |

Wurl: Dunno if I'd say it was the best but it was certainly one of the more "damn, that really would've happened" moments. The whole mindset of your standard-issue American around then was fucked. (It should be noted that the best part of the episode was Huey beating the holy hell out of Bill O'Reilly.  )
The big thing is that what sells generally has more appeal than what's accurate. I mean, this is purely anecdotal, but some of the schools I cover don't really have the best reputation (hell, when I was in high school, I know of kids that were scared to go play at some schools). But I go there and people generally have their shit together. (I say anecdotal because I don't know that there's anyone talented and thugged-out enough around here that the former lets coaches overlook the latter, but we know it exists on higher levels, don't we, Marcus Vick?) So it's the fantasy of the ghetto that moves units, which sort of becomes escapism for suburban cracka-ass crackers, but not everyone there's running around shooting each other. If the current atmosphere wasn't necessarily about being the hardest, wallowing in the ghetto, etc. then that kind of shit wouldn't sell. Maybe you'd see more enlightened artists be more successful.
