Rumor: The legend of The Legend of Zelda movie
Source: Legend of Zelda fan site Thehylia.com

The official story: Nintendo reps were not available for comment.

What we heard: Gaming movies are currently all the rage. With the recent announcement of the Halo film, it seems as though Hollywood may actually do them right for a change.

Historically, though, the spirit of most games gets lost in translation onto the silver screen. Exhibit A: German director Uwe Boll's menagerie of cinematic cowpats, which includes House of the Dead, Alone in the Dark, and the soon-to-be-released Bloodrayne.

Even gaming giant Nintendo has seen one of its properties, Super Mario Bros, bastardized into a universally hated movie. However, that may soon change. The rights to Metroid have become optioned by once-great, now semi-competent Hong Kong director John Woo, although no production start date has been announced.

This week, it looked like another beloved Nintendo game, The Legend of Zelda, might make it to the big screen. Mexican magazine Club Nintendo, the Spanish-language equivalent of Nintendo Power, quoted Nintendo executive vice president of sales and marketing Reggie Fils-Aime as saying that the company is indeed planning a Zelda film. Because Club Nintendo is published by Nintendo, there's zero chance of them misquoting Fils-Amie, let alone making up quotes attributed to him.

That said, Fils-Aime also said Nintendo is currently focusing all its efforts on the Metroid movie. Zelda is being considered as a following project, with the possibility of another Mario movie following that. Given that there's no timetable for a Metroid film, any hopes of pinning down a release for the Zelda movie would be pure guesswork. And many film projects that have been much farther along have wound up in development limbo for years--if not decades.

Bogus or not bogus?: Where there's a will, there's a way--if the Metroid film goes well, look for Zelda to get fast-tracked. If it bombs, don't expect to see Link's green tights on the big screen any time soon.

Lets see, what game to movie conversions have actually WORKED? None come to mind that were any good, apperantly Hollywood is under the impression that fan turnout = good movie. Good god.

First, Mario Bros, Next along came Resident Evil, then Tomb Raider. THEN DOOM (Major hate for this because I was a major major major doom player)

Also, what the hell, Halo? How are they possibly going to put that in a movie without screwing it up like they did with Doom. Then again, id software didn't have gallons of money to throw around like Microsoft did. Now Zelda? What other hollyword abominations will they release. Oh right, Metroid. God help us.

Working game-to-movie conversions... Like Mortal Kombat? That one was decent.

At any rate... I don't know why Halo would make an entirely good movie. Strikes me as the kind that's meant to be played, not watched. Same with Metroid. At least Zelda has good, rich plotlines to follow, and could probably pull off the action as well.

Mortal Kombat had nowhere to go but up.

Anyhow, yeah. I generally disagree with the entire concept of putting games to movies. Especially when the games are already aged like wine.

The Legend of Zelda concept is around as old as I am, and I don't think that anyone should milk it except game designers, making another game. A good one, preferrably.

Ohhhhhh Noooooes! No more movies based on games. Everyone of them have turned out to be complete shit (haven't seen DOOM yet, but from what my friends say... I kinda don't want to) A Halo movie, why the hell? Games should stay games and movies should stay movies, don't mix the two! MC, Samus, Link... all will be destroyed. I can just see them doing StarFox or Sonic too. Ahhh!

A Legend of Zelda movie sounds pretty bad. I mean I love the games, but the movie would suck. See, Halo and Doom can make movies because they have action and they can attract a lot of people. It has the story, and all sorts of stuff to grab the attention of the kids these days. Zelda isn't one of those games that would make a good movie. But if they did, I would see it...

As long as they don't get Orlando Bloom to play Link, I'm interested.

I think they should make an animated Zelda movie, not live action. It would seriously look stupid.

I liked Mario Brothers ;o

I'm going to withhold judgement on Metroid/Zelda till I learn more.

Now, I don't know why anyone would think Halo wouldn't translate into a movie. Half the game (especially the second one) is movie-perfect cutscenes. To be honest, I'd prefer it as a movie.

Bumpage aside, I have mixed feelings on it. I really don't think the Harry Potter movies are a good example for filmmakers taking liberties, since I think that while not nearly as good as the books, they largely stay relatively true to the story. If you want to bring up examples, how about the Resident Evil and Doom movies? Just awful, both of them. A Zelda movie could potentially be decent...but could also be complete crap. I'll wait for some more solid news, since I don't think anything's come out since the article initially referenced, but I doubt it'll actually happen.

Actually from what I read Nintendo said it wasn't true. I don't know how it got in their magazine.

What I remember is that some group of people were making a fan movie, based on The Legend of Zelda, but that was it. I don't think it would make a good live action movie.

I remember seeing a show called, "Best Videogames of 2005" on Spike (or Stupid) TV. It had NOTHING to do with actual videogames. Just a bunch of snobby celebrities taking credit for fucking up good games with smug shit cinematic counterparts.

I'd really like to kill the directors making such garbage of the gaming culture.

That is just sad.

As for a Zelda movie. It could work. Hard to do it, but still, it isn't impossible.

Plus, it's not like it could be worst than Doom and Alone in the Dark.
