After hearing the premise of the movie and rumors that it was supposed to be extraordinarily sick, I just had to go see it out of curiosity as to just how bad the gore was. I thought it would be a thinly veiled excuse to slaughter a bunch of people in nasty ways and gross out the audience - entertaining, perhaps, and a challenge for one's gore tolerance - but a middle of the road movie overall. I was wrong. This movie was significantly better than I expected.

Hostel is about some horny young men bumming around Europe in a drugged-up stupor. After a wacky night in Amsterdam, they find themselves out past curfew, and they can't get back into their hostel. A nearby stranger invites them up and tells them of a hostel out in Slovakia where there are plenty of gorgeous women looking to score. Of course, they head right off...finding out too late that it's a trap.

And this is why I figured the movie was going to be not much more than a pile of T&A and blood and gore. The beginning was a pile of T&A (much more than I expected, and somewhat over the top although it did make sense in context), but Hostel did have a believable plot, and you did sympathize with the main characters somewhat even though they were piggish on many levels. Hostel also did not play out as I expected. Without spoiling anything, I will say that it was not hopeless, it had a revenge element, and at various points near the end, people in the theater (myself included) were cheering audibly. As far as the blood and gore goes, I thought it was going to be worse. One of my friends compared the gross-out level to Seven, and that seems about right to me. One of my favorite icky parts is when a character is being transported through the splatterhouse and briefly sees several different people being tortured. It seemed Silent Hill-ish to me.

Considering that I expected my opinion to be "Well...that was rather entertaining in a disgusting sort of way", and I came out of the theater going "Dude! That splatterhouse movie was awesome!", I'd say it's worth seeing. The surprisingly non-hopeless latter part of the movie pushed it over the "OK" to "Pretty good!" line for me.

Freaky movie. I saw it on Saturday Night. Flipping scary as HELL. Literally, the first half hour is all sex.. and then it's all GORE GORE GORE GORE GORE GORE GORE GORE. Like, I don't even know how they got away with showing half the shit they did.

I was also high when I saw it, so in my mind.. it was 38247293847 times scarier than it actually probably was. But, even some of my other friends were scared.. so yeah. It was NUTS.

I think it means Tits and Ass, but I'm just guessing.

Anyways, I'm going to see the movie next Friday, I wanted to see it when it came out, but my friends wanted to see Dick & Jane instead.

Meh - as far as the sado/torture horror genre goes I found this movie middling at best. It has nothing on the Cannibal films.

I finally went to see this, aaaaaaand, didn't like it very much. I expected so much more gore. Like, people were touting it around as one truly sick movie with tons of gore...but it really was kind of tame. I mean, the gory parts were pretty sick (it's pretty cool watching a girl get her eye blowtorched, and man, cutting the eye off...that made me squirm), but there were so few of them. It's certainly no endless slaughterfest.

The revenge aspect was cool, though. I'm glad they didn't make it just a torture movie.

My favorite part was Takashi Miike's cameo. Yeeeeaaaah... That made me pretty warm and gooey in the loins.

I dunno, overall it just wasn't a very good or fun movie... It was simply all right. LOADS better than Cabin Fever, one of the director's previous movies, and hey, at least Hostel didn't suck as bad as Saw.

@Sickness: no. Still waiting to see Final Dest. 1 and/or 2. Gonna be a long wait.

I saw this movie, and I liked it on a number of levels. Movies with lots of gore and tension really get me going.

I didn't like the "hero" (if you will) at the start of the movie. I guess that was the intent, b/c you start to see that he actually gives a damn about other people, whereas earlier in the movie he was made out to be a partygoer itching to get drunk and laid. But he becomes strangely a sympathetic character about 3/5ths into the film.

The movie has convinced me to never visit Slovakia or pretty much any place in Eastern Europe if I ever go abroad.

Actually, I've kept thinking about this movie. Parts I thought were pretty cool keep popping up in my head. So it's a cool movie in hindsight. It might be one of those movies I have to see again to really like. I'll probably end up buying the DVD.
