Well, I've managed to change some tiles. As everybody(?) knows, warrior / fighter has following colours: red, black, khaki(skin). So I wan't to know, is it possible to make warrior / fighter have like blue hair, green body and brown skin? Or do they must have those same colours?
I'd also like to know, is there any sites containing Final Fantasy palettes, mainly for Tile Layer Pro.

NES games can only have four palettes for sprites. In Final Fantasy these palettes are:

Yellow, Light Brown, Light Blue
Red, White, Peach
Variable
White, Light Grey, Grey

You can hack the colors of the three non-variable palettes, and set any of the classes to use any of the palettes. The variable palette should not be used, as it will change everytime someone attacks or casts magic (Though it could be a special effect for a certain class, I guess). FFHackster has the ability to edit and change the palettes, by the way.

Yay I just tried FFHackster and I love it! But I got one problem, which makes no sense:
I changed some items, and made four new armour pieces: Slayer helm, Slayer armor, Slayer shield and Slayer gauntlets, and named them Slayer@h, Slayer@A, Slayer@s, Slayer@G.
And the icons appeared like I decided. Well, for test purposes, I put them on cornelia armor shop for 1 gp price, and bought them all. While I tested them on my fighter, I could only wear one piece at time! When I tried to equip the whole set, it didn't allow me to. It was like I had four healing helmets and trying to wear them all the same time... What's wrong?

Oh, and it seems that you can only change the colours of the fight scene man, not the mapman (so on map, fighter MUST be black, khaki and red.)

hmm...make sure that the items that you decided to change were items that matched one another's properties. For example, change sword for sword, gloves for gloves, helm for helm...not helm for armor, ring for armor, etc.

Yeah, the armor types can't be changed in Hackster, so you have to change the right ones. Weapons are weapons, however, you can change anything.

Thanks guys, you've been a great help! But as curious as I am, I must continue:

Changing music, is this possible? I tried the Mario Fantasy and it had mario musics, and the question is:
Can you put ONLY .nsf (or what was the format) music to a rom?
Or can you ONLY use other rom to get music from?
Can you add midis?
And if some of this is possible, I'd be glad to know

Mapman: Can you change warrior's (fighter) mapman colours to eg. Green, Blue and White?

Can you change the weapon icons, like make icons for MACE, RAPIER, BRASSKNUCKLES?

Can you make TOTALLY new class (in other words: have eg 7, 8 or even 9 total classes)

Can you make TOTALLY new items (without replacing any older)

Thanks

As far as I know, you can only put music into a [nes] ROM through .nsf ripping and reinserting into the game you hacked. Also, practically every game's sound engine is different from one another, and, no, midi files won't work with the NES, i'm sure. So, definitly yes, changing the music is possible, but requires lots of knowledge about the game you're hacking.

As far as everything else but music, it can be done with NES assembly (I think...), which i don't know .

The offset 0x39d4c (in the final fantasy 1 ROM) is where you can change the maximum number of selectable characters. The 7th character, if changed from 06 to 07, will be the Knight. He will looked glitched when selected, which is a TSA problem, but operates as a new class, essentially.

It's actually quite easy. FF1's music format has been documented already, and all you need is a basic understanding of notes and such. With enough time, a rescore is very possible. MIDI's are all the better, since they're just notes bieng played to an instument. Find something that can open a MIDI and show you what notes are there, and just a simple conversion to FF1's format and there you are.

Yes, from Hackster it's right there next to the button to edit the battle sprite.

Can you change the weapon icons, like make icons for MACE, RAPIER, BRASSKNUCKLES?

Yes, open the ROM in a tile editor like YY-CHR, scroll down until you see the font, draw some new ones over the old ones or replace some squished text.

Can you make TOTALLY new class (in other words: have eg 7, 8 or even 9 total classes)

With your level of experience, no, you'd have to get into assembly hacking for that, something I'm sure you're not really for yet.

Can you make TOTALLY new items (without replacing any older)

See above.

Also, since I'm sure it'll come up, it's not currently possible to use DTE for any text seen in battle, when they translated FF1 they never bothered writing an English DTE routine for battles, you'll get Japanese character-on-top-of-character DTE instead.

Hullo! More questions:

I want to change the starting text 'World is veiled...' to suit my own story better. How can I do that? I didn't find it on FFHACKSTER on dialogues / other stuff and neither did I with a tile-editor. How do I change it?

I tested hack called 'Lich's return', and on the battle scenes, all the characters were on the same screen! Just like on all other Final Fantasies. How can I do this?

Thanksies.

Oh and a word of warning: On Zophar's domain, the link for YY-CHR has something odd about it.. Downloaded it, and it has virus, which I got rid of already.

The virus seems to be "overlapping data" with YY-CHR that the scanners see as another thing. I've never enountered anything, nor have others.

Both the text and the battle screen are modified through a hex editor. Don't have the locations at the moment though. Sorry.

Just looked it up in Bonus Bytes, and it's $37F30.

Yeh I checked $37F30 and put some random stuff there ( I have no clue how to write something that makes sense there) and I completely messed the title screen, which was the result I expected! Now, is there any guides for changing the FF1 Title screen?

...All I can say is you should read Y Dienyddiwr Da's documents at disch's site, http://slick.panicus.org/docs.php?id=FF1.

This will give you plenty of knowledge on FF1.

Also, there was a thread created on an older Acmlm's board, http://board.acmlm.org/archive/thread.php?id=1199, that you should take a look at for other info.

To get the text in the hex editor to be what it displays in the rom, get a table file for FF1 from somewhere, and if your hex editor doesn't support table files, then get a new one. If you go to the address with the table file in use, what the hex code translates to as text in the ROM will show up somewhere, just change that until it says what you want it too.

There are table files included in Hackster which you can use in your hex editor of choise. For the title screen, use the DTE table.
