| How do you make three thousand dollars in nine months?
I am a student, my time is consumed verily by school, and by working as hard as I can to make sure I succeed in everything I do. I train myself to do wondrous things with computers and numbers, and soon I may even expand my horizons still further and attempt to breach the borders of the United States, studying somewhere else for experience and knowledge. However, I must also pay for my life. My expenses for the upcoming year just came in. By this september, I must have 3000 dollars in order to pay for my car insurance, my books for school, the cellular phone my parents insisted I have, whatever is left over on my school bill, gas for transportation to my job, and a few other things that I suppose I'll require. I have a job, I do work at Toys R Us, but that's not really all that amazing thus far, since they refuse to give me hours now that the christmas season is over. I expect around march or the middle of february my work will pick up again. As it stands, I have 77 dollars in my savings account. I can sell my books for some more money, my school billing is screwed up in a manner that suggests that I may have severe subtractions to my bill by september due to a miscalculation in the amount of financial aid I'm receiving, and I have a job lined up this semeseter in the computer department of my university as a maintanence officer (basically, I get 200 bucks every two weeks to make sure the computer's network systems are running properly) as part of a work-study program that will give me some hands-on experience with my field. Still, I'm nervous. I've vowed never to work for a restaurant again, and the way my job and my studies go, I'm bound severely in the means of getting any kind of job lined up period, so even the networking job I may have coming to me might prove to be ineffective. I'm not taking too many classes this semester fortunately (only four: I had five last semester), and I refuse to live at home and commute (if I can live on campus for almost free, that's better than living at home and spending excess money commuting for half an hour every day), so I'm on my way to saving a good bit of money and time. Still, does anyone have any tips? Suggestions, things I could do or ways to save pocket money? Every little bit helps. |

| Well, you could cut down on the most expensive candy. If you eat any, that is.
You can also try to buy cheaper food that still gives you what you need. I´m not really good at these things so bear with me. I try to help you as good as I can. |

| Is there a community notfdgdgasdgasg around somewhere? Like at a local mall or something like that?
If so, put up an advertisement offering your computer services to people or something. You're pretty good with computers, and most of the stuff people need is cleaning of spyware and stuff like that.  Charge by the hour. Offer your services to other students that aren't as computer savvy perhaps.
That should help you get some money in 
As for food and those costs, try to eat fresh food where possible... fresh fruit, veg, bread etc is all pretty inexpensive and you can do a lot with it. Better for you, too.
Draw up a budget, and stick to it too. |

| Well, I'm all right on food... I have a dining hall plan that keeps me well-fed for a minimum in price. And no, Trapster, I don't eat any candy, so I'm pretty good on that.
My computer skills are nowhere near those of some people in my major, but now that I think about it, there are definitely some people I could help, and there is a notfdgdgasdgasg for informal services somewhere on the URI campus. Hell, me and my roommates, people come into our room asking us how to fix their laptops... They do the craziest things to such delicate pieces of equipment, I swear. 
Eh, it's just trying to figure out ways to scrounge up as much spare money as I can so that when the moment comes at least the load is lighter. I could always bring back the good ol' change jar... Last fall that thing brought in a good 50 bucks just from money I had left over from whenver I ended up buying something or from change I found pretty much everywhere. | The only things i'd suggest selling are things that you know you wouldn't miss. Games you've beaten (or just don't want), Magic cards, things like that. If no one wants them locally, e-bay it up.
Other than that though, it seems like you've got a pretty good idea on what to do. |

But in all seriousness, budgeting and sticking to it is the way to be. There was a time when I was on a $360/month budget and couldn't really do anything about it due to heavy coursework. Doing a weekly assessment of how much money you have in reserve is crucial and can allow you to plan your decisions responsibly for the rest of the month. You said you're trying to hit $3000 by September. That's 9 months, which means $1000 every three months, or $333 per month, or about $83/week. You need to analyze whether you can realistically handle that. As for actually saving money, common sense usually applies. Don't go to a $8 dollar movie theatre when you can see a $1-2 movie that is probably just as good, and you'll even be able to afford concessions. Cooking and buying groceries will save you gobs of money over eating out, and you'll feel better too. Cutting down on habits, like soda and smoking can really help too. I figure I spend about $10 a week on soda. Over nine months that would save $360 if I didn't choose to make that expenditure. That's about all I can say on that matter. As for your books, try selling them to other students. Not only will they be able to get a lower price, you can set your selling price higher than what you'd get at a college bookstore on buyback. Cutting out the middleman is fun. I sold my old Calc book for like $65 a few years ago. The store would have paid me $20. They sold used copies of it for $90. Everybody wins. |

| 83 bucks a week... I only get half that currently, and that's not counting gas or any of my other personal expenses (like gas), or even gas.
Man, I really hope Toys R Us starts giving me hours again, my work will really pick up in the spring. Phil, I like your thinking, but the trouble with that is that none of my posessions really have any personal value. I could sure use an eBay account, too. I was talking over with my roommate about possibly doing a computer building service freelance, we take money from people to build them custom jobs and keep a stipend of it on the side... Reasonable? The thing is that I don't DO anything. Like, I don't go out and hang out with my friends, the farthest I go is to the mall to play DDR. I guess I should cut down on that? It'd probably help... Sticking to dining hall plans and not buying food on my own time would be a huge money saver, though I'd probably gain a good 15 pounds from the shit they serve there... Meh, I'd rather go hungry. And as an end to all means, I'd rather be a few thousand dollars in debt than not be able to go to school. Debts can be repaid. You can't leave a scholarship behind. | I'd definitely be looking at doing computer builds/upgrades/repairs then if it's something you're happy to do and you think there are people around who will use your service.
However, from my experience with computer business, the money is not in selling hardware as the margins are pitiful - the money is in your labor expenses. So generally jobs where you go and clean spyware for an hour or so and configure Outlook for a user are much more profitable than those jobs where you sell them a stick of ram and they install it themselves. |

I think a better course of action would be to do what Tarale suggests... Maybe post a sign on the door that offers my and my roommate's "services" to other people in the dorm hallway... PC's feelin' sick, take it to the "Doctor". Of course, I'm the only CS major in the hall, so I'm pretty sure I'd be able to make a killing off of my own "expertise"... |

That's a dumb way to get money though. Not so reliable. Whore your computer skills around, I'm sure you'd get paid to fix computers. Especially if you charge lower than the average rates, but not too much lower. You'd probably be helping people with stupid things to.. like you'd have to re-install AOL for them because it's broken. You'd be surprised at the number of people who'd think you were a genious for re-installing AOL for them. Or changing their myspace layout for them. I sware  |

It's not a bad idea, you could do something like have them bring in an ad from a major store and build them something similar from online parts(Or some of those Fry's combo deals). Set it up for them, install a few free programs(lololol, anti spyware, Open Office), etc. and charge them what you paid + a little extra. You could also upgrade other people's PCs for money along with that, charge them what you paid for the part along with $20 or something. That along with fixing other's computer problems should rake in *something* |

| There's this really awesome job I had in the summer in a Nursing Home around the "lower level" patients just standing around making sure they wouldn't fall over.(Recreation dept.) The only thing was that I felt really worthless having to call the nurses if they ever DID poo themselves(and it happened) and sometimes really REALLY sad for these lonely old people. |
