That's exactly what it does, its basicly a Full Heal under a different name. I think it might be a little bit cheaper, too. I'm not too sure so don't hold me to that..

Yeah, Lava Cookie is around 400 cheaper than Full Heal. Also, Lemonade is twice as cheap than Super Potion, and it heals 30 more HP. Lava Cookies in FR/LG can be bought somewhere, but I forgot where. Paying the extra money isn't such a big deal that late into the game, anyhow.

You can buy it on Two Island from the boy who opens up the shop (I'm not sure if he has it right away or adds it as you progress through the islands, I think its the latter and one of the first new items he gets..) or you can buy it on top of Mt. Chimney in Ruby, Sapphire, or Emerald and trade a Pokemon holding one over.

Yeah, I had like $800,000 by the time I finished that game, and that was after I went on a big spending spree before the last boss. And that truck, I bet they stuck it there to be part of the scenery, only to realize later that you couldn't actually see it.

I think this was explained before. When the old guy shows you a demo battle, it changes your name to "Old Man" so it'll show up as that in battle. (This is also why you can encounter Missingno in the first place.) I guess you did something to stop it from changing back.

Quite likely. Mine did weird shit like that too. On G/S, it would often make a "no windows available for popping" message appear, followed by the game freezing.


it turned Vermillion City into a Glitch City [and eventually crashed the game, I think]

Ah, yes, back when they planned it to be an item instead of being in the menu... that was immensely useful since those games didn't tell you if you already had one of the Pokémon you're fighting. Even though it messed up the graphics.

The last I checked, buying 2-99 of them would cost 999,999, but I’ll go check right now…

…I’m right. It costs 959,493 for one, and 999,999 for more than one; the game quits adding to the price once it hits the max. But than I suppose it could just say that but cost less when you try and buy it, which I didn’t, but I don’t think it works that way. And just to make sure we’re talking about the same thing, the item is “Nickname?”. The other item I mentioned turns out isn’t free, but does cost much less. In the Blue Version its name is “Ash”, and in the Red Version its name is “Gary”.

Let me rephrase the question: Why is Prof. Oak programmed as a trainer if you never battle him? It seems kinda dumb programming him as a trainer just to appear one time when you start a new game, unless it was easier or something.

Damn, I guess it checks for integer overflow. And there are actually a few different versions, they all have the same effect though.

Oak being a trainer probably is done to make him show up at the beginning. It's weird, yes, but we're talking about a game that mixes BCD and regular integers, re-uses everything for everything else (trainers defined as Pokémon, short bits of text defined as item and attack names, etc).

But that still doesn't explain the Pokemon he has when you battle him using that one code. A default setup of Pokemon, perhaps?

It IS garbage data. Without defining Pokemon, it reads off junk, which is why you get stange Pokemon combos, peculiar levels, and sometimes broken moves.

No, that's not the case at all with Missingno. Someone asked about this a little while ago. I think this was the thread, that should clear up everything.

Edit: and....I don't think you understood any of what I said. Changing the data so its not junk...is...how trainers work, period. They work the same way they did in the other games, but instead of being in a different bank, they are in the Pokemon bank, meaning you can "fight" them. Because the trainer definition for the fight isnt set up, garbage read off in place of the actual values is used. Really, its not an unused Pokemon or concept. It does the same thing in Gold and Silver but they just have a bank to themself.

Oh please, Trapster just made a assumption. You don't have to go and troll him for that. Besides, people not experienced with how programs work would be little confused by Yoro's explanation. Besides that Missingno thread should clear any confusions... Here's a good Wikipedia article for Missingno.

I don't know the mechanics behind the Pokémon battles, but I swear that certain trainers did only use full restore x number of times like it was preset. Maybe I was just imagining... I never hacked the R/B/Y/G/S/C Pokémon games, only the GBA ones and only little.

Though. In blue, and leaf green. It seemed like trainers wouldn't use full restores more than once per poke. Or once, period; I can't remember. But yeah, infinite really doesn't sound right.

In the advanced series, Trainers were given set items. I want to say it was 2 for every normal trainer and 4 for gym leaders, but it could very easily be 4 all around..but it most certainly is set. In the original games, the mechanics worked...differently. I wouldn't doubt an unlimited item supply, even unintentionaly, the programming was just so bad .__.;;;

Oh, I might mention. The version in question was Pokémon Yellow. They might have limited the number of times the trainers can use the dreaded full restore compared to blue/red... which I only played for their glitches.

I rembember I got Yellow just becuse so I could get the "missing Pokémon" from G/S, such as the starters and the R/B/Y legendary. Hell... my Pokédex in gold isn't far from being full. I do have both Mew and Celebi so...

...then, I stopped playing around after I got mew as the release of Ruby/Sapphire was like two months away. I bought a Nintendo DS on the same week as it was released!

Oak had a Tauros, a Blastoise, a Gyarados, an Exeggutor and an Arcanine when you fought him via cheating device. Oh, and I remember one time where Brock kept on using Full Heal on his Pokemon. He had an unlimited supply of them, and always used them when his Pokemon were affected by a status condition. However, in the remakes, the trainers all use healing items instead of having a specific item (IE: Giovanni using Guard Spec, Koga using X Defend).
