So yeah, today, Alex Tew officially made a million dollars in five months by selling all of his ad space...

The catch?

One dollar = 1 pixel.

Thats right... a single dot is one dollar...

Just to see what the completed page looks like, click here

I have to say... this is one of the most creative ideas that Ive seen in a while.

Interesting way to get money.

Sadly I was mesmerized by the website and stared at it for awhile*

There are now tons of ripoffs. None of them seems to be doing nearly as well.

That's the point.....he's selling ad space. $1 per pixle, that's why the banners aren't very large.

It worked great for the buyers, too, since when things started picking up the site got tons of attention and their ads therefore got tons of exposure.

He made more than a million, though: he sold the last thousand earlier today in an auction.

That's nuts. I wish I thought of that.

How many copy-cat websites do you think will be capable of getting that much money before the market is saturated?

Probably none.
It reminds me of that guy who went on ebay and sold a month of advertising on his forehead for some crazy amount, then a ton of people tried the same and got no bidders. It's not what was offered that landed him so much money, it's how weird the idea was. The company that won the bidding got a lot of exposure because of it.

It's not a bad idea, but I'm amazed it works. I mean an image this big: would cost $121! And it's not even animated or a link. Who'd buy it?

The site seems to be down, but I saw it in the newspaper a while ago. A lot of ads were even almost completely covered by others.

You realize, though, that this is a relatively cheap way of getting advertising, because it doesn't take that much to display a familiar logo.

No ads are covered up, because each pixel is only sold once. There are some funny-shaped ads that were bought to fill in funky spaces between other ads, though.

More power to the guy. Way to become an instant millionaire with no hassles at all.

Of course, this is an idea that can really only work once. So woe to the people who rip this off.

Yeah, I haven't read the guy's blog, and I don't plan to, but the person who told me about this mentioned that the guy made a post a while after activity started picking up saying basically "I just realized that I've paid off my entire college tuition from this thing."

that sentence is horribly convoluted but I'm not fixing it
