I had promised a hacks section on ROMhacking.net and I'm going to deliver, but to get it right I'm going to need some assistance from those of you more familiar with hacks than I am. (I specialize in translations).

The section hasn't gone public yet, but here is a tenative fully functional preview of how it is going to look:

http://www.romhacking.net/?page=hacks

This section is for you guys. We don't have many of you in our community at ROMhacking.net and we'd like to get some of you over there. Our goal is to have a centralized place for everyone in the ROMhacking community to go to.

So, what I need from you is:

1. Some feedback on what you think of the section so far and any opinions or suggestions you might that would make you want to come visit the site.

2. What hacks would like you to see in the database? Do you want only complete hacks? incomplete hacks? Penis Mario hacks? In progress hacks? You tell me. It would also be nice if you could point to some existing hack archives that you feel are good so I a.) know where to find the hacks you want and b.) can get an idea for existing sections you already think are good and visit.

3. What do you think about submitting your own hacks(and thus generating a page for it) to the database? It's actually a little bit of work because our database contains a good number of fields to fill in for your hack. I know people are lazy(in general) and I'm not sure how many people would be interested in taking the extra few minutes to do so. It would be subject to the approval process of the site of course to prevent abuse.

With that said, help me help you! hehe Let's start up a new ACTIVE hack archive with hacks you don't want to see dissappear. What can I do to make you visit the site and become part of the community?

1. It looks ok, but I suggest that you should give the option to sort hacks for each different catigory. And also the hacks should be catigorized by the original game by default. Also put a space between each pic of the hack.

2.Why not have a caitgory for each? Complete games, demos, spoof hacks, etc.

3. Have the option to do both. Users cound send in their hacks to you, or who ever is putting then up, or they could do it themsselves. But just make sure you have it so that they have to have all the fields filled.

Wait a minute, Did anyone got FuSoYa's Permission to host Demo World the Legend Continues. Well, it alright unless it's not for money but you should have asked FuSoYa first.

As for insectduel's domain anyone host someone's hacks onto my site without permisson will be sent back and excluding Pokemon Brown which I asked coolboyman's permission.

What is it with you and the attitude?

And why would FuSoYa mind, really?

1. I like everything except for the screenshots at the bottom, reducing their size just seems odd considering how small they are to begin with.

2. I hate "demo" hacks, with one level and some graphics changed. I only want to see final or betas of high-quality hacks that have been discontinued. Of course, no hack is ever really final, I still tweak Castlevania Retold now and then, but the hack should be at a point where the creator feels its complete.

3. I like this idea, most archives aren't updated as much as they should be, if the creator can upload a page for their hack on their own chances are you'll get a lot more hacks in the database. Of course, as you said you'd still have to sort through them all and pull out the crap.

Personally, I really like it. The only gripe I have is that the version of Dragoon X Omega on the page is v1.0 (2000), not 2.0f (2003); much was done to the game between them.

Personaly I think before moving to other sections you might want to complete others. I saw a couple of editors not listed. Also I think it is time you move on and update everything to date.

OK, maybe I was being paranoid but I think FuSoYa don't even care if it's distributed to other sites other than FuSoYa's Niche. I think FuSoYa wan't everyone to enjoy DWTLC.

Synthrax:

Thanks for the constructive feedback. I guess that's what I will do. I will add categories of completion like I have the Translation section. I was a bit reluctant because personally, I only wanted to host completed hacks, but that's not what's best for the community.

All good suggestions. Thanks.

insectduel:

What is your problem? First, It's not possible to contact the hack author of the majority of the hacks out there. FuSoYa happens to not be a part of that majority, however, I don't think he'd mind from few the times I spoke to him, and if he does, we'll remove it. Plain and simple. Go away.

Dragonsbrethren:

The screenshots fit neatly in one row if they are small. Also, what about any future hacks such as N64 hacks where screenshots are 640x480 in size? Or PC hacks etc.. Just because the majority of hacks are NES or SNES, doesn't mean they're all small. That's the main reason it's there. The same was done for the translations. It keeps all the screenshots the same size for the layout rather than the screenshot size reflecting the resolution of the console and being uncontrollable in layout.

Sliver X:

I addressed this on the ROMhacking.net board. I assume you're talking about the images here, right? Go check out the topic you made there on DXO2 there.

Thanks for coming. At least somebody isn't predisposed to dislike something different and help it be better.

Mega-Dog:

You are totally missing the point of the site. We're moving away from the rely on the staff and instead rely on the community. And I must say for somebody who would come here and point out that editors are missing, yet NOT report them to the site or even here so we can FIX the problem, you are not a model community member.

It's up the commmunity to submit news about new releases as well as let us know if an entry is wrong or outdated. It's ridiculous to expect a few staff members to keep THOUSANDS of total database entries on the site always up to date. What do you think we do, sit on the computer and visit hundreds of web pages everyday looking for updates? No.. people have to REPORT the news to us.

Maybe the site isn't for people with your mentality of thinking. So, why don't you report what's missing or not up to date and we'll fix it and you'll have nothing to complain about?

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but I give that place maybe a year before it starts being filled up with garbage like this one.

(p.s.: most of the reason for idiocy here is because the people who actually visit it (i.e., the mods, people like you) don't actually say anything about it.

On a side note, good luck with this hacks section, heh.

No. It's that they're part of it.

Sounds to me like you're basically stating DahrkDiaz (who, last I checked, basically 'owned' this forum in a sense) is a part of the problem?

Aparrently you misunderstood me.

I reported to the old romhacking.net years ago about most of them and never got a reply. Also I don't get much time in the comunity now days busy with many other things, it is even hard to finish up my projects.

1. Just add in the ability to sort by category/creator/platform/etc., and you'll be all set.

2. Only put in complete hacks, and they have to stand out in a way (IOW, no stereotypical SMW hacks unless they're really different and/or good). Try to stay away from hosting hacks that aren't good, too.

3. Going with #2, we don't want this to turn into n00b hack central. Especially with all those...unethical SMW hacks crawling around. The requirements to get in should be fairly strict. Enough to keep the bad to average hacks out and the great hacks in.

A voting system wouldn't be plausable in a situation like this (hell, not even ANY situation), due to voting bias. There would simply be a lack of votes. This will happen regardless of how much you promote the site, which could cause the better hacks to get buried under a sea, or worse - in the middle - of shitty ones. Text only hacks, monster hacks (for RPGs), stupid graphics hacks (good ones could get in, though), n00b hacks, ordinary hacks, etc. shouldn't be allowed in. Note that "ordinary" is defined as "average of all hacks for that game." It is really only a big factor with games like Super Mario World. In short, you should only host hacks that stand out from others in a positive way.

1. I like the organization of the section so far, it will definitely help beat out endless hunting for a hack that someone desperately.

2. Primarily, I'd like to see only complete hacks there because they seem to be the only ones worthwhile. A select few demos can slip by such as Super Mario Odyssey or the work of DD, and not just some run-of-the-mill demo.

3. I'd give a green light on having a submission system to this site, but be very careful of which stuff you allow onto the site. As I've seen in the past few months of SMW hacking...a lot of the stuff has been utter crap, so you should require screenshots and substantial information from the author before hosting it.

We are *NOT* the old ROMhacking.net/.org/.com. We're not associated in any way aside from having one staff member who used to be on board back then and some database refrences.

I have personally started and constructed this site from the gound up and have no association with the people who ignored you then. In fact, I have already added the utilities you pointed out to us as well as a Bionic Commando one.

You can't judge us based on them. We do care and we do take action as I have hopefully already demonstrated to you. When you release your two upcoming new editors in the works, please contact us via the 'Contact Staff' section or board.(The 'Submit News' section is only for making the actual news posts to display on the front page, and not for general comments or requests) or create your own news update to be posted on the site.

Do that and you can be sure your utilitie will be added to our site. Anyone who uses our Contact Staff form goes directly to a special forum viewable only by staff, so each submission is documented, not forgotten, and handled accordingly. And in most cases, we respond to the submitter to let them know what action was carried out.

asdf

Yes, I have already started working on some code to allow ordering by any column as is demonstrated by the 'Date' column right now(despite being ugly blue!)

Because you can sort by category such as 'Complete' or 'Demo', I figure that will give the flexibility to appease people who only want Complete hacks like you and I and those who like Demos or other immature hacks. We can easily filter only complete hacks. Do you think that is acceptable?

To be honest, I had considered a public voting or review system. You bring up some valid points over the problems that can occur with one. Rather than votes, how about public written reviews? This is a little later on though and won't be in place for the initial section launch.

Golden Yoshi

Everything on the site is subject to approval by staff and we would continue with such policy. It's the only way to filter out the crap and prevent abuse.

Having a search option for 'Complete' or 'Demo' should be acceptable, correct? Don't forget you can weed out junk hacks by choosing that the hack must have Graphical, level, and sound hacked for example.

That would work fine. However, you still shouldn't put up demos, unless they are extrodinary. SMO, for example. There are one too many demos of hacks out there, so you should at least not allow short demos (IE: 1-2 World/Level Demos), and should get rid of the demos when the full hack is released. Publicly written reviews? That should work perfectly.

I've got an idea related to bugfixes. A few games (FF3us/FF6 mostly) have a huge number of bugfix patches available but you usually have to go to the author's homepage to find them, most sites that host hacks don't have a section for these. They're too small to warrent a page for each of them but it'd be nice if you could go to a page with a list of all the bugfix patches available for a certain game.

Games I know for a fact have bugfixes/tweaks:

Final Fantasy
Final Fantasy II
Final Fantasy IV Advance (I made them)
Final Fantasy III US/VI
Secret of Evermore
Secret of Mana
Seiken Densetsu III
