Apple will start selling the MacBook Pro (stupid name, looks like a wonderful computer). I must have this thing, simply must have it. I mean, just look at the specs. The Intel-processor should mean that compatibility issues gradually should disappear.
In related news, Apple also announced an iPod with an FM-radio. All in all, an impressive line-up of new hardware from their latest expo. |

I think the FM radio thing is available as an accessory to nanos and the most recent ipods, and it also functions as a remote.

mmm intel macs.
Well, this is what the rumor mills were predicting for the keynote. So I'm glad to see it happen. About time Apple updated their laptop line too. Seriously, it was really really needing it. And yes, I shall get myself a MacBook Pro. Probably not till my debt issue is under control; but I will get one. |

I'll get 2nd gen of this thing if I don't get another laptop from now until then. This was sort of expected. My pro-Apple professor was talking about it last month but said he wouldn't get 1st gen since well...there is bound to be bugs... Let's see what sorts of things people try to use this for... You could, uh. Run world of warcraft better.
Maybe more companies will start making mac versions of their games. IT'S ALL YOU CAN HOPE FOR. |

In an interesting note, the warez scene has now released a patch for mac OSX that lets it run un UNMODIFIED pc hardware.
I installed it in vmware.... it works. |

But how well? This issue was brought up before. Wouldn't it only work with hardware designed to be Mac-compatible?

Yes, I'd be curious as to how stable OS X is on hardware it's not familiar with. Unlike Windows, the developers of OS X haven't tried to build the OS to support every dodgy two-bit taiwanese piece of hardware....

Holy sh*t! Those specs are amazing for a laptop. My motherboard doesnīt even support PCIe.
"Video: Built-in iSight Camera, a DVI, VGA (DVI to VGA adapter included)" And that sounds quite nifty. Any ideas of what itīll cost? |

Originally posted by Ran-chan US $1999 for the lower end model, US $2499 for the higher end one. The specs are quite good. I'm looking forward to getting one. It will be some months down the track of course; but still.... besides by then hopefully there will be more applications native to the Intel platform rather than having Rosetta do the work. |

I knew it was going to be expensive. Thatīs why I donīt usually like laptops. Theyīre easy to take with but they cost half a fortune.
$1999 = 15,455 SEK. $2499 = 19,320 SEK. No thanks. |

On a sidenote, the iMac also got an Intel processor now (the same as the MacBook Pro, but better).
I hope they will announce the consumer laptop soon (instead of the iBook, just MacBook?). Btw, yeah, there are already beta OSX versions running on a PC, so I guess it won't take that long before 10.4.4 gets hacked and run on a PC, although they added new security I think. Also, rumors are that it will be possible to install Windows on an IntelMac (of course not supported by Apple, but they won't/can't stop it). I won't do it, but for the hardcore gamers it might be a good thing perhaps. |

Originally posted by Ran-chan That sounds about right for apple products. Apple products are more expensive for their opposite counterpart. However, if you talk to anyone who uses Apple, they say it is worth every penny. There are laptops at a local store that run for 1/4 of that price right now trapster... So, they cost as much as PCs now... |

Originally posted by Mercury Apple don't mind you running Windows on an Intel Mac at all. In fact, they have a "sure, run Windows" attitude towards it As for the iBook / MacBook, I'm not sure if the name will change there or not. I suspect it will remain iBook if I think about it -- the iMac stayed an iMac.... I think the reason the name "Powerbook" was dropped is cause it's no longer PowerPC Architecture. Oh and as for the cost of Apple notebooks -- I agree, I think it's worth every penny. For that money you get a stunning laptop, and you can see all the attention to detail that went into making it, right down to touches like the backlit keyboard, the new power cable, the hard drive that parks itself if it detects you've droppped the laptop (to prevent damage) etc. Touches that at the end of the day make your user experience more enjoyable. Not to mention that they really are beautiful pieces of hardware. |

In the next few months, I'd expect a slew of drivers coming from all the different hardware manufacturers. If they did that, I'd expect cease and desist notices to come out of Apple to those manufacturers, or something like that. Apple don't want OS X running on any hardware other than their own. That's why they've put the initial protection in in the first place. I'm pretty sure they would act to protect their OS. They're fine with Windows running on their hardware; but not OS X running on anybody else's. Part of that is that they want people to buy their hardware... but there's also the issue of stability and compatability.... (and the reputation that comes with that) |

There's not much apple can do actually, 3rd party products... unlicensed have been done for years. Besides I don't think apple can do much for open source drivers.
I yet have to try running it in vmware myself, but I plan to do that later today. Sort of understandable why Macintosh don't want to make it run on your avergae IBM PC clone computer. One reason why Mac OS X is stable is becuse it's built to run on legacy hardware. :/ Edit: I hope someone hacks Mac OS X and makes a liveCD version of it. xD (There's alot of LiveCD distros for Linux, but it's possible with Windows too! It's not just... very legal, unless you do it yourself obviously.) (edited by Ailura on 01-11-06 08:15 PM) (edited by Ailura on 01-11-06 08:16 PM) |

Originally posted by Ailura Well, I doubt there'd be much they could do about open-source stuff; but I think that say if.... nvidia for example started putting out official drivers for OS X for hardware that isn't in a Macintosh, that Apple would have some kind of case with sending a cease-and-desist to nvidia. And it would definitely be a bad move for ATI, as it would damage the business relationship that they have with Apple. |
