In the lack of good RPG's out there.

I'm all for first person shooters, and grand theft auto-like games. They're fun. But there's nothing like an amazing RPG. Nothing.

I'm just wondering if maybe there were some good RPG's that I've overlooked. I haven't seen anything that caught my interest.. since Kingdom Hearts. And before that I've only played the Final Fantasy games, and Legend of Dragoon. Legend of Legia to.

So I take it that there are some pretty big gamers here. Recommend some RPG's? Preferable with a reason why I'd want to play it.

I'm going off the basis that you've only played the games that you've listed, so if I list something you forgot to list then ignore it.

Chrono Trigger (SNES, PSX) - One of, if not the best non-Final Fantasy RPG that Square ever made. Fantastic graphics, one of the best soundtracks of all time, a great storyline... just a tremendous experience. Required playing if you're an RPG fan.

Dragon Warrior/Quest series (1, 2, 3 - NES, GBC; 4 - NES; 5, 6 - SNES, translated; 7 - PSX; 8 - PS2) - One of the few series that never messes around with the core components of its gameplay and battle system; it only expands on it. Not for everyone, and the challenge may put some people off at some points, but they are solid RPG's. You need translation patches for the 5/6 roms, and Dragon Quest 8 has gotten rave reviews given the fact it was just released.

First of all i agree with colin that Chrono Trigger MUST (sorry) be played because,
in my opinion is one of the bestttttttt!!!!

On the other hand if you like adventure RPG the zelda series are the best and
the most widely supported with consoles (NES,SNES,GB,GBC,GBA,N64,GG and
even in PC unofficially) For more information on zelda PM me if you want.

Also Breath of Fire is good (SNES) and.... well for PC Warcraft 3 the Frozen Throne

Final Fantasy Tactics (PSX)
I know you said you've played the Final Fantasy games, but this one doesn't seem to be one a lot of people have played. If you have, sorry. Good story (better in the first part, where it's still political in nature), bad translation. The battles are typical turn-based strategy fare, but they don't use the player phase/enemy phase system, instead using speed for that and magic charging. Tricky to learn the system at first, but if you need any help there's plenty of guides out there, and I'd be willing to try helping. The Tutorial, though horribly translated, is helpful if you can figure out what the hell they're saying. I could.

Earthbound (SNES)
Don't expect a typical swords and sorcery RPG here, though. Baseball bats, frying pans, psychic powers, gangs, cars, robots, and the freaky thing called Mr. Saturn. A more lighthearted RPG than most, Earthbound is quite long, without the conventional overworld maps; everything's connected through forests, caves, or the roads between towns. To make it quicker, you do get a teleport ability later in the game. Right before you have to do major backtracking, conveniently.

The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind (PC/Xbox)
This one... to be honest, when I reviewed it I had to give it a 6 or 7, can't recall which. I love the game, but it's got its share of flaws. It's played from a first or third person perspective, and though the combat sucks, everything else about the game is great IMO. Graphics aren't too hot either, but that doesn't bother me. Exploration's one of the most important things to do in this game so you can find the various artifacts and get some money (which is hard to come by for a newbie.) Just a note, the PC version has two expansions. If you get the Xbox version, the Game of the Year edition has those expansions and a lot more bugs and load times. =/

Lunar and Lunar 2 (PSX)
Good luck finding them for less than $24, and I know some people hate paying that much for a last-gen game... Worth every dime, though, in my opinion. They lack sidequests, but even without sidequests the games are long - Lunar 2 especially. Lunar came in at about 35 hours for my first playthrough... Lunar 2 took me 40 or 50 to get to the boss of the last disc of the main game, but then there's the Epilogue afterward.

Phantasy Star IV (Sega Genesis) The first game that actually made me sad at one moment. Probably my favorite RPG. It has spells, techs, combination spells, good story and a bunch of colourful characters.

FFVI (One of the best FF games) Another great RPG with one of the best Ending bosses of all time.

Earthbound (as Alastor already suggested. Unfortunately, the computer I was playing it at got a virus and my file was removed. I was at level 60 or something.)

IŽll see if I can come up with some more.

Legend of Mana (PSX)
This is an amazing-superb game. Everything from what type of weapon your main character uses to the very world you adventure in can be changed with decisions in-game. It follows many storylines, and you can choose which one(s) to participate in. One of the most unique RPGs I've ever played. The real fun, though, comes when you play the game alongside a friend, adding an interesting co-op element. Oh, and the music... (stoned trance)

Terranigma (SNES) (Translated? I'm not sure)
You play as a Chrono-esque character who uses a spear and is trying to rebuild the world. the combat system is fully within the dungeon map system, leading to opportunities like shoving annoying opponents into pits. The dungeons themselves are long and challenging, and the towns are small but offer just the services you need. Do Not play this game if you want to always be using magic, the magic system sucks. But besides that, this is a really awesome RPG. Ditto the stoned trance for the music. Super awesome, yo.

I concur with Cheveyo on basically all of his points.

I really liked the two big Dreamcast ones, Skies of Arcadia and the Grandia series. The pirate theme of SoA was what really drew me in, and the special move progression was enjoyable and different for each character. Grandia (and 2) had a good looking battle system, particularly the way you could move around in your attack menu. I've found this genuinly hard to finish too. I'm not big on real time rpgs, there's probably more out there that I would like too if I knew about them.

The opening scene in Skies of Arcadia is by far one of the greatest sequence of events I have seen in an RPG. And the game just goes uphill from there.

Ha, looks like everyone's got their bases covered... For a bit of a twist though, why not give the Megaman Battle Network games a try, too? They're a dime a dozen nowadays, but that doesn't make them bad. A simple, cute story, a great battle system, and a lot of stuff to do on the side of the normal game that serves only to make the insane challenges the game can offer that much more possible.

I definitely have to go with Wurl and Hiryuu here... the NIS games (Phantom Brave too, if it hasn't been mentioned) are great plays, really interesting tactical systems. And you can work your way towards doing an ungodly amount of damage, which is fun to watch for novelty value. I never should have sold my copy of Disgaea...

The Breath of Fire games, particularly the third one (in my opinion) are good, solid RPGs that shouldn't be passed up. They're just... fun. That's all that you can get out of them.

Suikoden is a series you should not overlook, either. They're incredible games. The premise revolves around saving nothing more than the country you live in (though the events in it may affect the world even if they just centralize around that area) with the help of the 108 Stars of Destiny (that's 108 party members, supporting characters, and servicemen that you gather throughout the course of the game). Every character has a backstory, there's a boatload of extra lore to discover that stretches across all four (five? Suikoden Tactics has been released...) games and ties together very nicely, and there aren't any confusing systems or elements that you have to get used to, it's all very straightforward.

And then there's pretty much any of Working Design's revival projects... Lunar has already been recommended, but also worth a look is Albert Odyssey for the Sega Saturn(far and away one of the funniest translations ever done), Vanguard Bandits (not for non-turn based strategy fans), and DEFINITELY the Arc the Lad games.

And one last suggestion...

Xenogears. I can't explain how awesome it is. Of everything I've mentioned before this, Xenogears trumps them all. It's got a hefty price tag on it (usually around 30 bucks from a smart vendor: It's RARE.), but like Cheveyo's claim with Lunar, it's worth every penny. Square completely outdid themselves with this game. It's a work of art, for sure.

I'm shocked that only one person has mentioned the Suikoden series so far. The Suikoden series, ESPICALLY Suikoden III, are some of the best RPGs ever made.

Der Langrisser's a great game. I dunno why, but it was more appealing to me than Fire Emblem IV. Maybe because I always got all those cool looking characters in the beginning killed in FE 4.

Kingdom Hearts was the greatest RPG out there and can't be matched. Well, at least until the second one comes out.

I reccomend Star Ocean the Second Story (PS1). This is just me.

Though I'm not arguing its greatness...I do think putting 'est' at the end of that 'great' oversteps its bounds a bit. Even KH2 I doubt would rank up there as the best RPG that I've ever played. It's good, but not the best.

Really? I find Suikoden III to be the worst in the series.
