In my hack, mario will go through one level that will alter the course of the rest of the game, if he takes the secret exit, he will go to one submap, if he takes the regular exit, he will reach the other. Now one of these will be a desert world, and the other a snow world, so should the snow level be the secret exit, or the desert?

Well if one is supposed to be harder, than I'll vote for snow.
The snow submap can have slippery levels which can be more challenging. |

I was figuring more for equal level difficulty, thanks for your opinion, but I want at least five votes before I make a move.

Well then if it's equal difficulty, maybe the normal and secret exit should be just as easy to find. One exit shouldn't be "secret," just an "alternate" exit.

I also think there should be two obvious exits so that the player can choose the course they want to take, that'll give it a good little replayability factor. After the player finishes one course, he can try his hand at the other one, rather than search for a secret exit. I'd just prefer the freedom factor to choose which course I'd want to take, personally.

Yeah, that's what I just said, I guess you worded it better though.

Why make them choose? Use the special world blocks in blocktool so that when you clear a level farther into the game, the game thinks the special world is cleared (I.E, the palette swap and the changed GFX of some sprites.) ; just change the special world palettes to look exactly like the normal palettes and the Special world GFX too if you want, and you'll only be able to reach the secret exit once you "clear" the special world level.

I vote snow, because its cool. But you should make two pipes, one goes to a desert, the other goes to the snow, so the player can go back if he does not like slippery levels. Icy levels are more challenging, so make the secret exit lead to the snow place, then that leads up to a final level (AKA: color changing level) which , when you beat it, shows an icy overworld. Then the player can show off the new snow palette overworld to show they beat the secret.

Don't do this anymore. When you make a topic on a trivial idea such as this, the topic won't likely generate any useful replies and might break out into spam. You'll be no closer to figuring out which choice is better, and the topic will drift off and be one more obstructive topic between the front page and whatever good, informative topic someone is looking for.
Only you can decide anyway, right? So make the 2 second decision already and get back to the hack. Snow, desert, it's all blah. |

With snow, you have the hardly seen slippery levels and I just love the generic snow palette included with SMW. Plus you get the opportunity to use my Winter tileset. Wtih desert, you can work in the more atheletic levels without too much of a stretch. Let's not forget my Oil tilset that works great in a desert setting. |

I just wanted to know the publics opinion on which was better, and I think that I was given an idea thanks to Tatrion, I think I may use his idea, or mabye marioman 64's. Oh yeah, thanks JJ but I can't seem to use the pallettes included with the snow tileset, (and for some odd reason I haven't downloaded your oil foreground guess I better check it out) thanks! |
