Here are two solutions to the two most common problems people ask about in this forum.

1. Do not move Elitemap or any of it's contents from the directory you chose to install it in.
2. Do not have a space in the file name of the rom when using ScriptEd.

Okay, so I got my hands on the midi2agb converter tool. Anyhow, it nicely makes .s files from midis for me. But I'm having a few problems when I get Sappy to import the .s file and compile it to tracks. Now I made sure that the midiplaydef.s was renamed to mplaydef.s, too.

Basically, it comes down to this:

1) I'm still not quite sure what I should enter for the first hex address. Should it be the header address of another song, the place in the song table, some blank space in the rom or what?

2)Compiling the song into the game destroys the ROM. I figure it's caused either by my incompetence due to 1) or by the midi files themselves, but I have attempted it with a few different midi files.

Any help would be nice.

The assembled song causes Sappy to crash with a runtime error in Kernel32.dll when played, as well as whenever the assembled song is accessed in-game, the game freezes as sound initialises.

What rom? Maybe I can try it.

Also...

*Kyoufu Kawa pastes from his site...

When you load up Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire and find track 366, "Caves and Darkness", you'll notice that you can't play it. A mystery.

I've recently converted the Zero Wing Medley (from VGMusic.com) to M4A because I thought it'd be cool, and got the same mysterious error. Which is slightly less mysterious when running from the IDE. So I traced it down to track 6, removed all commands therein and put them back, beat by beat. Already in beat 5 did the plot thicken... a lot.

As it turns out, the EOT command is not fully supported. A single note works fine, but full chords fail. The actual error that's supposed to appear is "Subscript out of Range", which doesn't help much either.

I'm afraid there's little to be done here but to avoid playing these songs. Developers, if you have a song with passages like this:
.byte EOT, As2

.byte Cs3
.byte Fn3

...that wouldn't work. TIEs start fine, but EOTs spanning more than one note break things.

Lacking .S files, Pokémon's "Caves and Darkness" song is a bit difficult to fix but you could look, in the song data, for 0xCE and 0xCF which are EOT and TIE respectively.

By the way, the Medley sounds great. Even if I remove most of the String Ensemble track

Well, the ROMs I've been using are Advance Wars 2 - Aus (AW2E) and your Jukebox demo. Although the Jukebox demo was fiddled around with before I knew I needed to use empty space. In AW2, I've been sticking the songs in 617F1F, which is just where the free space in the ROM starts. Midis I've been using are:

http://www.vgmusic.com/new-files/JakesThemerev1.mid (Jake's Theme By ThreeHeadedMonkey)
http://www.vgmusic.com/new-files/KoalTheme.mid (Koal's Theme By ThreeHeadedMonkey)
http://www.vgmusic.com/music/console/nintendo/snes/somcontn.mid (Sunken Continent - Star of Darkness (2))
http://www.vgmusic.com/music/console/nintendo/snes/sombest.mid (Mana Beast - Meridian Dance by Nick)

Yeah, yeah. I know I'm Advance Wars obsessed.

Regardless.

And from what you've told me, basically a track can't end on a chord. Hmm. Still, that's reasonably helpful.

No, you can only have a single sustained note at a time, per track. Sustained chords can't be released without crashing, no matter how close to the track's ending point it is.

Stupidly, the crash occurs during preload.

I'm gonna take that first MIDI in your list and try to put it in AW2. Expect a full report soon.

Well, I figured it out. Due to a nice bit of breakage, the assembler failed on pointers.

I've built a quick 1.0.1 release, you can get it here.

BTW: Jake's Theme sounds funny with the AW2 soundfont

Awesome. Seems I wasn't just making a colossal idiot of myself then.

Alrighty, time to fiddle around with this the next chance I get to use my PC.

Edit: Okay, I've had quite a fiddle around with it, and got lots of songs to work with it. You're right. Jake's theme does sound really weirdarse with the AW2 voice sets.

Basically, apart from a few, most Midi files I've been using have worked fine. I also discovered a bug, too. If Sappy can't assemble a song because it has an extended chord, then all songs attempted to be assembled afterwards will be given the error, regardless of whether they're okay or not.

Thanks for all your help!

The assembler doesn't care about sustained chords. The player does.

Oh, right. Regardless, if anything causes a subscript out of range error, then all songs attempted to be assembled after that will get the same error.

And one final thing, I've noticed that a lot of Assembled midis will play perfectly fine in Sappy itself, but they won't play at all in game, and instead just flatline with silence. The Jake's theme I gave you for example, won't play at all in game, but works fine in Sappy.

Must be a header setting.

Header is four bytes setting, four byte instrument pointer, then the track pointers.

First setting is the # of tracks, the rest is... various stuff. Compare these three bytes from Jake's Theme with some of the other songs.

Guess what? I figured out what you guys keep doing wrong in the Exporters!

Don't just give a path: C:\Sappy
DO give a full pattern: C:\Sappy\My Song - Track $T.bin

Next version checks for this.
