Now before you suggest TLP or YY-CHR or Tile Molester you need to know a few things.

I need a tile editor where I can custom save the tiles I want to use later. (like Mario Paint's Custom Stamps.) That way I can design a room for a hack without having to possibly mess up anything else first. Something compatible with XP would be nice. I've been looking with google and Downloads.com but haven't had any luck so far.

Why not make backups :?

It's just to see if I like the way certain things go together before I start. I tend to plan a LOT in advance.

Planning in advance? You must not be human. Humans aren't capable of such good habits.

Well, while I commend you for your procedural tendencies, I'm not aware that there are any room-savy tile laying programs out there. Something might have to be custom-built.

You might want to ask around to different programmers of the forum and see if any of them can do something to get you what you need. (I myself am not willing, for I've got an N64 level editor on the way. Those aren't very common)

You know, considering how many tile editing utilities are designed specifically for ROMS (TLP being an example), you'd figure that would be a built in feature. =/

But yeah. Edit the graphics in a tile editor, insert them into a backup ROM, check how it looks, then try it with different graphics in a different backup. Or at least, it sounds like that's what you want to do. IMO, you should just edit one graphic at a time, instead of trying them all out in advance and putting them in the ROM at the same time.

But just out of curiosity, what game are you changing the graphics in? Some utilities for certain games allow you to decrompress specific graphics one at a time instead of the whole bunch, and you'd be able to edit and insert them individually.

Specifically 2d Zelda games that look good. Z3: LTTP, Minish Cap, Four Swords.
Right Now I am trying to work on more of rooms to go along with a story than actually hacking into the rom.

Tile Molester. You can create a blank file in it, draw whatever you want, and save it somewhere you won't delete it. No ROM needed. (That's if I'm understanding you correctly)

I'll go try that and thanks.

YY-CHR can also save graphics into a separate file- just choose File>New.

Well Tile Molester works so far but I just need something better so I guess I'll try YY-CHR.

You can just make a blank 4K file (or however big you want) in a hex editor (or even Notepad) and put your graphics in it. Or just copy any random file big enough to hold them, and plop the graphics in overtop of whatever's in there. I do it with TLP all the time.

Well basically I want to redo the overworld all in one go and see how it would actually look. Yeah the image would be huge so I need more suggestions. I'd like to be able to scroll through each individual screen. That's what I plan on using it for.
