UGH, recently, I haven't been able to access my little sister's files (or any other computer's) on the network. However, she can usually access my files and do whatever she likes with them. Currently, neither of us can look at each other's files while we CAN share iTunes.

The network is set up like this:

Cable modem->linksys router
linksys router->my computer
linksys router->3com wireless access point
3 com wiereless access point->sister's computer

It always says that I don't have permission to look at her files or that I'm not part of the network. There aren't any firewalls up or anything and I am REALLY puzzled.

what's the internal IP address of your computer and your sisters? I'm not sure how access points work but I think there is a double NAT within your network as an access point allows one port of entry for many wireless connections, similar to what your router does to allow multiple computers connect to the internet.

To find the in use IP address of a computer (what I was referring to in my question) and assuming it has windows running.

1) Start->Run->"cmd"
2) ipconfig

You should see something that looks like this:

Windows IP Configuration

Ethernet adapter Internet:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : gateway.2wire.net
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.65
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.254

The in use IP address is on the line of "IP Address". For troubleshooting purposes, could you copy and paste the result of typing ipconfig for each computer.

that should work...

see if your computer can ping your sister's computer (from your computer). To do that you do

1) Start->Run->"cmd"
2) ping 192.168.1.102

If you can ping your sisters, then you are in good shape.

Anyways, that service pack 2 raises a flag. Even though you say you have no firewall, did you include the built in WinXP firewall? To check to see if that is enabled go to Control Panel->Security Center. WinXP firewall should be OFF. If it is on, then you should turn it off. Then try to access your sister's computer again from your computer.

If the WinXP firewall is really OFF, then let's check your sister's network connection properties. Go to Start->Control Panel->Network Connections. Right click on the LAN connection that is the network, and select properties. In the general tab, in the box that is labeled "This connection uses the following items", make sure there is "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" and "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP".

Go to the "Advanced" tab and click on "Settings" in the "Windows Firewall" Section--that should popup a new dialog box. In the general tab, "Off" should be selected.

If you've gone through all this and everything checks out, check to see if both computers are on the same workgroup. Although, if one computer can see the other, this should be the case. But to eliminate that possibility of where the trouble is, check it by doing the following:

1) Window Key+Break (or right click on My Computer and select properties OR Start->Control Panel->System)
2) Go to "Computer Name" Tab
3) Verify that the workgroup is the same.

If you have done everything I've said, then I'm not sure how to help you now, short of telling you to switch your sisters computer to WinXP Pro.

Ok now all firewalls are down(McAfee, XP), we are on the same workgroup, was able to ping my sister's computer(before, when mcAfee was up, I didn't receive any packets back), I can see the folders she is sharing and she can see mine. We just can't access each other's folders now. But we CAN get to each other's iTunes. And I can also double click on her computer in the "view workgroup computers" tab(couldn't before).

Are you able to get a password dialog? In order for me to access files on a Win2K computer, I get a dialog box. I then enter in my username and password that exists on that Win2K box. If you aren't getting a password dialog, what exactly is windows saying?

This is what windows says:

(Said Network Place) is not accessible. You might not have the permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The network path was not found.

Try this: Make an account on your sister's computer with the same username and password as there is on the computer you are accessing from. WinXP Home has simple file sharing so everyone should be able to access it. But maybe because of SP2, you actually need to have an account on it. It is a long shot but worth a try.

Basically what he's saying is to:

Create an account on your sister's computer using the same Username and Password as the account your using on your computer( The computer your trying to access files with)

On your sisters computer..

1) Start->Control Panel->User Accounts. This opens a window that lists the user accounts on a computer. Therefore, you should see your sister's account on that.
2) Under "Pick a Task" (which should be above the list of user accounts on the computer), select "Create a new account"
3) In "Name the new account", enter the username of that on YOUR computer of the account you are accessing from. For example, if you useraccount on your computer is "JinDogan", then enter "JinDogan".
4) Once you enter the username, click on "Next"
5) In "Pick an account type", select "Computer Adminstrator" and click on "Create Account". The username should now appear in the list of user accounts mentioned before.
6) If you have a password for the account with the same name on the your computer, then you will need to add a password. Click on the account, select something that says add a password.
7) Enter in the password exactly like what you have on YOUR computer (remember, you are doing all this account adding stuff on your SISTER'S computer).
8) Fill in the remaining information as you please.
9) Make the changes and you have now created your username and password on your sisters computer.
10) Go try to access the files on your SISTER'S computer from YOUR computer.

These folders wouldn't happen to be in \Windows? I set up a network between this computer (XP Pro SP2) and another (98), and even though I gave this one full access to C: and all subfolders, it would give access denied errors for C:\Windows; I had to use the Admin$ share (which is mapped \Windows). XP might not do this though.

Off topic a bit, why doesn't your XP Pro system have SP2?

neotransotaku's solution will not work. Home edition has an annoying "feature" that forceguest can not be turned off. It is designed to prevent files shared from it from being accessed over the network with any account other than "Guest". So, any file on a computer running home edition can not be accessed over the network unless the guest account can access it.

Well now I have SP 2 and I put the same name and password on my sister's computer, disabled all firewalls. She can see and access my files while I can only see her folders on my network places.

I suggest converting your sister's home edition to Pro. At this point, it is down to a permissions issue and there is no way to set permissions in XP Home.

two things left I can think of.

#1 to do the opposite--make your sister's account on your XP Pro machine. then try to access your sister's computer with that account.

#2 try to share something that isn't in a microsoft place. For example, try sharing a folder with a path that doesn't start with "Windows" or "Document and Settings" or "My Documents"
